Book Sir Donald Bradman Memorabilia

Download or read book Sir Donald Bradman Memorabilia written by James Merchant and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-10-01 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir Donald has always encapsulated a lot of what inspires me. He was a remarkable sportsman and an Australian Legend, who handled his fame with class. His cricket prowess and longevity of life meant that a lot of memorabilia was produced since around 1930 and there is always a market for it. As a person inflicted with the collecting bug and a strong sense of National pride, I couldnt help myself! There are many collectors and museums in the cricketing world, but there is very little reference material relating to their treasures. I have always kept the sales advertisements, brochures, certificates and boxes pertaining to the items in my collection, because they give it more meaning. An item of memorabilia can give you visual stimulus and even prompt some feelings relating to its procurement or your journey to see it. However, Ive learnt that a little bit of knowledge can also transcend an item of memorabilia from an object to something more of a friend or family member. For the statistically minded, there are 209 A4 pages, featuring 141 different items, 214 colour images, 381 references and 89 different cricketers are mentioned in connection with the items.

Book excerpt: A masterly portrait of cricket's supreme batsman and Australia's greatest hero. Uniquely among biographers of Don Bradman, Charles Williams sets his subject's cricketing achievements within the context of a crucial period in the history of modern Australia, a time when, as the country felt her way towards something that the world would recognise as 'nationhood', Bradman became a focus for national aspirations, a figure of unique status. Sports Around the World: History, Culture, and Practice provides a unique, global overview of sports and sports cultures. Unlike most works of this type, this book provides both essays that examine general topics, such as globalization and sport, international relations and sport, and tourism and sport, as well as essays on sports history, culture, and practice in world regions—for example, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Middle East and North Africa, Europe, and Oceania—in order to provide a more global perspective. These essays are followed by entries on specific sports, world athletes, stadiums and arenas, famous games and matches, and major controversies. Spanning topics as varied as modern professional cycling to the fictional movie Rocky to the deadly ball game of the ancient Mayans, the first three volumes contain overview essays and entries for specific sports that have been and are currently practiced around the world. The fourth volume provides a compendium of information on the winners of major sporting competitions from around the world. Readers will gain invaluable insights into how sports have been enjoyed throughout all of human culture, and more fully comprehend their cultural contexts. The entries provide suggestions for further reading on each topic—helpful to general readers, students with school projects, university students and academics alike. Book The Bradman Museum s World of Cricket

Download or read book The Bradman Museum s World of Cricket written by Mike Coward and published by Allen & Unwin. This book was released on 2015-02-01 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 2014-15 season Australia stages the eleventh ICC World Cup of Cricket, with fourteen nations competing in 49 fifty-over matches. At the same time the Bradman Museum, a monument to the greatest cricketer of all time, celebrates its 25th anniversary. To mark that milestone at a time when the eyes of the cricketing world will be on Australia, this book reveals for the first time in print the founding treasure of the Bradman Museum: the Don's personal collection of 35-mm slides. With Bradman's typed commentary and handwritten amendments alongside, the slides showcase the history of cricket, from its agrarian beginnings in England to its status as a game of Empire, fit for introduction to the colonies. Grace, Hobbs, Hendren, Larwood, O'Reilly, McCabe, Lindwall, Trueman - on these legends and many more Bradman gives us his opinion with characteristic directness. We gain insight into the game as he saw it in all its magic. While Bradman's personal slide collection forms the centrepiece of this stunning collection, the work of three of cricket's greatest photographers are also featured. Among Bruce Postle's black and white photos from the 1960s and 70s are iconic shots that will thrill any cricket lover. Vivian Jenkins' work brings to life the drama of the 1970s and World Series Cricket, while Philip Brown's camera ranges across international cricket up to the present day. This treasure trove of cricket is woven seamlessly together by the matchless commentary of Mike Coward, one of Australia's most acclaimed experts.

Book The Visual in Sport

Download or read book The Visual in Sport written by Mike Huggins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive, novel and exciting interdisciplinary collection brings together leading international authorities from the history of sport, social history, art history, film history, design history, cultural studies and related fields to explore the ways in which visual culture has shaped, and continues to impact upon, our understanding of sport as an integral element within popular culture. Visual representations of sport have previously been little examined and under-exploited by historians, with little focused and rigorous scrutiny of these vital historical documents. This study seeks to redress this balance by engaging with a wide variety of cultural products, ranging from sports stadia and monuments in the public arena, to paintings, prints, photographs, posters, stamps, design artefacts, films and political cartoons. By examining the contexts of both the production and reception of this historical evidence, and highlighting the multiple meanings and social significance of this body of work, the collection provides original, powerful and stimulating insights into the ways in which visual material assists our knowledge and understanding of sport. This collection will facilitate researchers, publishers and others with an interest in sport to move beyond traditional text-based scholarship and appreciate the powerful imagery of sport in new ways. This book was previously published as a special issue of the International Journal of the History of Sport.

Book Men In White pb

Download or read book Men In White pb written by Mukul Kesavan and published by Penguin Books India. This book was released on 2010-06 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'You watch, drifting, surrounded by the thing. It's like living underwater.' Men in White describes the experience of living with cricket in a country consumed by the game. Mukul Kesavan is keen on cricket in a non-playing way. With a top score of 14 in neighbourhood cricket and a lively distaste for fast bowling, his credentials for writing about the game are founded on the assumption that distance brings perspective. The book recalls the 'Pandara Park' cricket of Kesavan's childhood, examines the current health of Test cricket, the problem of chucking, the growing influence of technology on the game and, as he puts it, the wickedness of the ICC. In-between, he profiles his cricketing heroes and denounces modern cricket's villains. First published in 2007, this updated edition includes a profile of M.S. Dhoni, 'India's first adult captain since Pataudi', a celebration of the freakishly talented Muttiah Muralitharan and a chronicle of the 'Symonds Affair' which revealed more about the racism of the Indian fan than we wanted to acknowledge. Written with a novelist's talent for making things vivid and a fan's unwinking commitment to his team, Men in White is an indispensable book for cricket lovers everywhere.
