Spanning the hydrologic cycle from rain to watersheds, aquifers to springs, rivers to estuaries, ample illustrations promote understanding of important concepts and clarify major ideas. Aquatic science is covered comprehensively, with relevant principles of chemistry, physics, geology, geography, ecology, and biology included throughout the text. Emphasizing water sustainability and conservation, the book tells us what we can do personally to conserve for the future and presents job and volunteer opportunities in the hope that some students will pursue careers in aquatic science. Texas Aquatic Science, originally developed as part of a multi-faceted education project for middle and high school students, can also be used at the college level for non-science majors, in the home-school environment, and by anyone who educates kids about nature and water. Book Impact of Interventions on Brackish Water Ecosystem and Livelihoods

Download or read book Impact of Interventions on Brackish Water Ecosystem and Livelihoods written by Prosun Kumar Ghosh and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-03 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an opportunity to understand the cause-effect relation between water resources development interventions and brackish water ecosystems in a developing country like Bangladesh. Because of the increasing water development interventions in Bangladesh, brackish water ecosystems have become a great concern at the present time. Being located in the south-eastern coastal area of Bangladesh, the Bakkhali River faces such type of threat. Due to the rubber dam construction across the river, the brackish water zone has been cut-off by establishing a distinct fresh and saline water zone affecting livelihoods of the brackish water dependent groups. The study reveals low availability of the indicator species in the zone. Finally, the study also argues that the impact on indicator species is due not only to the rubber dam construction across the river but also increased fisher folks and indiscriminate fishing practice considerably.

Book Microbial Ecology of a Brackish Water Environment

Download or read book Microbial Ecology of a Brackish Water Environment written by G. Rheinheimer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A knowledge, which is as accurate as possible of microbial ecology is indispensible for ecosystem research and environmental protection. This is particularly true for coastal waters, whereby brackish water areas occupy a special position. After several years of preliminary studies on the composition and distribution of the micro flora -algae, fungi, and bacteria -a comprehensive investigation on the primary production, bacterial development and microbial uptake and decom position of substances in the Kie1 Bight was carried out, during which ten scientists from the Institut fUr Meereskunde ofKiel University participated. Here forthe first time numerous hydrographical, chemical and microbiological parameters could be measured on the same water samples. The aim of this joint project was to gain an insight into the manifold functions of the microorganisms in the uptake and degradation of organic substances and in the connections between pollution, production, and remineralization. The results ofthe investigations led not only to new knowledge of the role ofthe microorganisms in the brackish water ecosystem, but also to a revision of earlier conceptions, especially on the influence of wastes on the micro flora and its role in the self-purification of coastal waters. Such a time-limited investigation, however, cannot clarify all the questions on the complex relationships between the microorganisms and their biotope. Therefore, the present volume should also be understood as a stimulus for new and further-reaching research on the microbial ecology of coastal waters. Thereby the most important methods are described, as well as the practical experience obtained.

Book Brackish Water Ecology Of A Tidal Creek

Download or read book Brackish Water Ecology Of A Tidal Creek written by Blessing Julius Oribhabor and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mangrove forest dominates the low-energy intertidal zones of lagoons, estuaries, and coastal systems in the tropics, subtropics, and along some temperate coast. There have been warnings that supportive data have not been collected and that fish and decapods use of mangroves may not be the same in all areas of the globe. Data available on brackish water ecosystems are limited to lagoons and estuarine portions of a few rivers. Therefore, this book on hydrobiological survey provides information on the physical, chemical and faunal characteristics of Buguma Creek, a mangrove creek in the Niger Delta, Nigeria which could be utilized in some management consideration and in planning of more detailed hydrobiological investigations for other tidal creeks, or brackish water ecosystems. The Book will be useful for professionals in hydrology; plankton, macrobenthic, and fish ecology of brackish water ecosystems.

Book Freshwater Ecosystems in Protected Areas

Download or read book Freshwater Ecosystems in Protected Areas written by C. Max Finlayson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-01-02 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freshwater ecosystems have the greatest species diversity per unit area and many endangered species. This book shows that, rather than being a marginal part of terrestrial protected area management, freshwater conservation is central to sustaining biodiversity. It focuses on better practices for conserving inland aquatic ecosystems in protected areas, including rivers, wetlands, peatlands, other freshwater and brackish ecosystems, and estuaries. The authors define inland aquatic ecosystems, showing just how diverse and widespread they are. They examine the principles and processes that are essential for the conservation of freshwater ecosystems and aquatic species. Major categories of threats to freshwater ecosystems and the flow-on implications for protected area design are described. Practical case studies are used to illustrate principles and practices applied around the world. Specific management needs of the main types of freshwater ecosystems are considered, as well as the management of freshwaters in the broader landscape, showing how natural resource governance processes can be harnessed to better manage freshwater biodiversity. The book offers commentary on how to adapt freshwater conservation practices to climate change and ends with an insightful synthesis.
