Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For those who are tired of braaiing the same old chops and wors and MSG-soaked bottled sauces, this is a seriously different book on braaiing. Following the phenomenal success of Braai Buddy and numerous requests for a sequel, author de Waal Davis has once again compiled a magnificent collection of international recipes modified and adapted to South Africa’s favourite national pastime – the braai. In keeping with current trends in taste and cooking style, he has included sections on gas cooking, the pros and cons of wood versus gas and classic ‘steakhouse’ sauces. The potjie section has recipes from around the world as well as South Africa. Chapters also cover the fire, bastes, dry rubs, glazes, marinades, steaks, beef, chicken, lamb, pork and fish, not forgetting a ‘controversial’ guest list. So yes, the humour of the original Braai Buddy is continued in Braai Buddy 2. Colin Daniel’s cartoon-style illustrations add a further dimension to this recipe compilation, which is for the serious braaier with a serious sense of humour.

Book Hedonizing Technologies

Download or read book Hedonizing Technologies written by Rachel P. Maines and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2009-08-01 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rachel P. Maines’s latest work examines the rise of hobbies and leisure activities in Western culture from antiquity to the present day. As technologies are "hedonized," consumers find increasing pleasure in the hobbies’ associated tools, methods, and instructional literature. Work once essential to survival and comfort—gardening, hunting, cooking, needlework, home mechanics, and brewing—have gradually evolved into hobbies and recreational activities. As a result, the technologies associated with these pursuits have become less efficient but more appealing to the new class of leisure artisans. Maines interprets the growth and economic significance of hobbies in terms of broad consumer demand for the technologies associated with them. Hedonizing Technologies uses bibliometric and retail census data to show the growth in world markets for hobby craft tools, books, periodicals, and materials from the late 18th century to today. The book addresses basic issues in the history of labor and industry and makes an original contribution to the discussion of how technology and people interact.

But its impact reached beyond them - to the families and loved ones at home - and it has left its mark decades after the conscripts re-entered civvy street. From Soldier to Civvy explores National Service from a number of different angles. It contains in-depth accounts from a diverse selection of former conscripts - a Recce, a dog handler, a mortarist, a Parabat, a gunner, a loadmaster, a military policeman and a marine - who take you through their entire military careers and provide detailed insider’s information on each role. A number of frank and humorous letters home from a soldier to his fiancée are also included, and there are interviews with women - mothers, sisters, wives and girlfriends - who talk about how National Service affected them and their men. And, finally, former soldiers look back at their time in the army and reveal the powerful and lasting effects it has had on them and how they view it from the perspective of the present. From Soldier to Civvy provides valuable new insights into National Service and its far-reaching consequences. It will entertain, enlighten and challenge readers to reconsider this crucial period of our history.

Book Surfing South Africa

Download or read book Surfing South Africa written by Steve Pike and published by Juta and Company Ltd. This book was released on 2007 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A follow-up to the classic "Surfing in South Africa", this is a new book, completely revised and updated. Written by Spike (Steve Pike), founder of the cult surfing website Wavescape.co.za, it comprises chapters on history, big waves, spots, culture, travel, oceanography, sharks (including a timeline of shark attacks) and a hilarious 'Surfrican' slang glossary. The book is illustrated with 180 graphics, cartoons and photographs. You will find quirky descriptions of surf spots along almost 3,000 km of coast (watch out for the razor-toothed tortoise), a photo essay of surfing personalities by acclaimed photographer Harry de Zitter, as well as colourful journalism from top writers covering subjects connected to the surfing lifestyle. The full-colour book, which is 110 pages bigger than the previous book, is an indispensable resource. Images come from top South African photographers, such as Barry Tuck, Tom Peschak, Michael Dei-Cont, Andy Mason, Lance Slabbert, Brenton Geach, and Pierre Marqua. The contributors of words added spice to an eclectic mix of culture and science. An original piece by Paul Botha forms the backbone to a much-expanded history chapter. Tom Peschak adds gravitas to issues around sharks and conservation. The brave life of John Whitmore is poignantly remembered by Tony Heard. Ross Frylinck gives gritty insights into the forlorn splendour of the Diamond Coast. Tongue in cheek, Gideon Malherbe uncovers our surfing addiction. Henri du Plessis provides a profile of a committed exponent of that addiction. Tony Weaver eloquently tackles the challenge of sharing the sea with sharks. Ben Trovato romps through issues around surfing evolution and lifeguards in skimpy Speedos.

Book Zulu Zulu Golf

  • Author : Arn Durand
  • Publisher : Penguin Random House South Africa
  • Release : 2011-05-27
  • ISBN : 1770222030
  • Pages : 312 pages

Download or read book Zulu Zulu Golf written by Arn Durand and published by Penguin Random House South Africa. This book was released on 2011-05-27 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘There is no dignity in death. Six bodies are piled up in front of me, shot to shit. I can see that their bones are white, their blood is red and their brains are yellow. I’ve done this; I’ve helped to kill them.’ A unit of the South African Police, Koevoet was the most deadly fighting force involved in the Border War. This is the story of Arn Durand’s first years with Koevoet, from 1982 to 1983. Through his eyes, the madness, mayhem and complexity of war come alive as he describes patrols, ambushes and contacts, situations of certain death, dealings with the enemy and relationships with his Ovambo colleagues. A powerful account of extreme experiences, the book shows what it took to survive combat in the hostile environments of Namibia and Angola. Zulu Zulu Golf does not glorify war. It simply relates, in deadpan style, what it was like to be a killing machine in the heat of battle.

Book 20 Habits That Break Habits

Download or read book 20 Habits That Break Habits written by Pepe Marais and published by Jonathan Ball Publishers. This book was released on 2020-11-09 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After hitting a brick wall in both his business and personal life in 2006, Pepe Marais discovered his purpose on which he rebuilt all aspects of his life over the course of the next fourteen years. The results of his purposeful approach to life have been nothing short of spectacular and in this, his second book, Pepe once again sets out to deliver on his personal purpose: to bring out the best in those around him. The life lessons that Pepe provides in 20 Habits That Break Habits are based on Aristotle's insight that we are what we repeatedly do, and that excellence therefore is not an act, but a habit. Through his own experience, Pepe has learnt that there are two kinds of habits: those that limit us and those that liberate us. And in order to eradicate a limiting habit, you simply have to replace it with a liberating one. Throughout this book, Pepe shares some of his own most limiting habits that held him back over the course of his journey, and the liberating habits he replaced each of them with in order to create a significant breakthrough in his own life. From turning wine into water, to replacing television with the kitchen table, if a book could come with a warning sign, then this one should. Because ... it may just change your life! 20 Habits That Break Habits reflects a deep concern for developing human potential and is in service of your journey towards discovering your own inner greatness.

Book Of Wizards and Angels

Download or read book Of Wizards and Angels written by Charles Louis Braai and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2011-10-20 with total page 677 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late seventeen hundreds and early eighteen hundreds, I was Beethovens prized pupil, if you can believe it. Unfortunately I had to quit him for reasons not concerning music. It was really quite silly. I was supposed to be protecting my good name. You see, it was rumored that the maestro, Beethoven, was a womanizer and while conducting orchestras he also conducted many affairs with his young female students. In those times, although mostly behind their backs, some men and even some women were referred to as libertines. Of course any man as emotional as Beethoven had to be romantically exotic, but I didnt consider him a libertine; it was just that young women threw themselves at him and he used the opportunities. The saddest part was this remarkable man was almost deaf; in later years, he became almost completely and totally deaf. Yet this man was such a genius, just by reading the written notes, he could hear the music inside his head. Often, he laid his hands on the piano as I played. At times, when I playedparticularly when we were alone, after hed closed the piano, thus containing the soundhed then lay his head down on the piano; by doing so, with his temple held tightly on the lid, it enabled him to hear it fully the way it was meant to be heard. This was done only prudently and only witnessed by certain people as he was embarrassed and, at first, not wanting to admit being deaf. No matter how much relief Id get by forgetting the music, I never would forget it on purpose. That music is a part of me, more so than my arms and limbs even; the music is more part of me than my perceived beauty or my immortality.

Book The Recce Way

  • Publisher : Jonathan Ball Publishers
  • Release : 2017-10-11
  • ISBN : 1868428362
  • Pages : 117 pages

Download or read book The Recce Way written by Justin Vermaak and published by Jonathan Ball Publishers. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vulture soup, anyone? Or how about some fried python with a side order of diesel-dipped dog biscuits? Specialised cooking – The Recce Way gives a unique perspective on the lives of South Africa's legendary Special Forces soldiers. The book combines tongue-in-cheek recipes with anecdotes of the men's experiences during the Border War, and up to 1997, putting the gruel into gruelling. It shows what it takes to live out of a rucksack for weeks on end and how to make do with what nature has to offer. Highlighting the scope of the activities of the first 25 years of the Special Forces, the book takes us from Durban to Langebaan, through Phalaborwa into the rest of Africa, and from the firing line to a braai on top of a submarine out at sea. Most importantly, it overflows with the Recce philosophy for excelling in adverse conditions – stay in the moment, adapt, adjust and just get on with it! WARNING: While most of the meals in this book are edible, some should never, ever, be repeated.
