Book A Boy s Control and Self Expression

Download or read book A Boy s Control and Self Expression written by Eustace Miles and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Boy's Control and Self-Expression: Illustrated With About 250 Figs It is supposed that a book should keep within reach, or at least within sight, of a single point, as anyone walking round St. Mary's of the Scilly Isles usually keeps within sight of the simple-looking Marconi Station. My book usually keeps within sight of a single idea, which I will express in a somewhat long sentence. Fairly considering all that I know now, what training of body and mind should I choose if I were allowed to become a boy again, and if I wanted to prevent the most serious mistakes as easily as possible and with as little attention to them as possible, so as to avoid morbidness or crankiness or priggishness? I must have read quite a hundred and fifty books and papers on the subject of purity for boys, but not one of them answered my question. Almost every one-there were, of course, some exceptions - brought before me a picture of an immaculate perfection, clothed in black, standing on an inaccessible platform of genteel propriety, and, as a rule, hopelessly out of touch with the real boy, as we see him in life and in such books as "The Golden Age," "The Human Boy," "Stalky and Co.," and "Vice-Versa." Book Shakespeare and the Origins of English

Download or read book Shakespeare and the Origins of English written by Neil Rhodes and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2004 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What existed before there was a subject known as English? How did English eventually come about? Focusing specifically on Shakespeare's role in the origins of the subject, Rhodes addresses the evolution of English from the early modern period up to the late eighteenth century. He deals with the kinds of literary and educational practices that would have formed Shakespeare's experience and shaped his work and traces the origins of English in certain aspects of the educational regime that existed before English literature became an established part of the curriculum. Rhodes then presents Shakespeare both as a product of Renaissance rhetorical teaching and as an agent of the transformation of rhetoric in the eighteenth century into the subject that emerged as the modern study of English. By transferring terms from contemporary disciplines, such as 'media studies' and 'creative writing', or the technology of computing, to earlier cultural contexts Rhodes aims both to invite further reflection on the nature of the practices themselves, and also to offer new ways of thinking about their relationship to the discipline of English. Shakespeare and the Origins of English attempts not only an explanation of where English came from, but suggests how some of the things that we do now in the name of 'English' might usefully be understood in a wider historical perspective. By extending our view of its past, we may achieve a clearer view of its future.

Book Music Morality and Social Reform in Nineteenth Century Britain

Download or read book Music Morality and Social Reform in Nineteenth Century Britain written by Paul Watt and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2023-11-21 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pioneering work which delves into and reveals the links between music, moral instruction and social reform. This book discusses the role of music in programmes of personal improvement and social reform in nineteenth-century Britain. The pursuit of morality through music was designed not just to improve personal and communal character but to affect social change and transformation. The book examines the musical education of children, women and men through a variety of literature published for various educational settings including mechanics' institutes. It also considers the role of music in narratives of social programs and community-building projects that sought to promote utility, well-being and freedom from the strictures of Christianity as the dominant moral and cultural force. The first book to connect the threads between music, moral instruction and social reform across the educational life cycle in nineteenth-century Britain, it shows how these threads are found in unlikely places, such as games, manners books, economics treatises and short stories. It deftly illustrates the links between everyday life, popular culture and discourses of morality and social reform of the period.
