Book excerpt: So much of my time is given to reading boys' books that, when I read books for grown-ups, now and again I find myself saying, "What a bully story for boys to read!" Latterly, I have been putting down the titles of such stories. When the list began to lengthen, it occurred to me, why not make a book for boys containing stories like that: stories written for grown-ups but also of interest to boys in their early teens. Such a collection of stories could not be made, however, without the consent of the authors and publishers, but since everybody loves a boy, I didn't have much trouble in convincing them they ought to grant permission to use their stories for such a purpose and, as a result, I am pleased to present to the boy readers of our country the Boy Scouts Book of Stories. Looking over the list, I find it covers pretty well the reading interests of boys. There are stories about boy scouts, school stories, stories of the sea and "wild west" stories, detective and mystery stories; most of all, though, a goodly number of humorous stories, and I am willing to hazard the guess there will be no regrets on the part of readers because the selections happen to abound in stories of the latter sort. How about it, boys?

He fell into a brown melancholy, until suddenly he caught the sympathetic glance of Mrs. Rogers on him, and for fear that she would think it was due to his own weakness, he began to chat volubly. He had always been a little in awe of the Butcher. Not that the Butcher had not been friendly; but he was so blunt and rough and unbending that he rather repelled intimacy. He watched him covertly, admiring the bravado with which he pretended unconcern. It must be awful to be threatened with expulsion and actually to be expelled, to have your whole life ruined, once and forever. The Big Man's heart was stirred. Download or read book The Boy Scout s Book of Campfire Stories written by Mint Editions and published by Graphic Arts Books. This book was released on 2021-01-19 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Boy Scout’s Book of Campfire Stories (1921) is a collection of stories for children by some of twentieth-century America’s most popular authors. Published for the Boy Scouts of America, the book was intended to entertain Boy Scouts and their leaders on camping trips as well as to instill in them a passion for adventure. In “Silverhorns,” written by Henry van Dyke, an experienced hunter named Dudley Hemenway shares stories with a Scotsman while waiting for their train to depart. Over cigars, they talk about moose hunting, and describe their desire to catch the elusive silverhorn. Zane Grey’s “The Wild-Horse Hunter,” a Western tale, begins with three hunters making camp in the wide-open wilderness. As night falls, they start a fire by a stream and recount their difficult day and their struggle to capture the legendary Wildfire. “The Hydrophobic Skunk” is a humorous tale by Irvin S. Cobb about a rare creature said to live at the bottom of the Grand Canyon. Jack London’s “That Spot,” another story of wit and humor, follows a group of prospectors during the Klondike Gold Rush who try and fail to rid themselves of a stray dog that joins their expedition. The Boy Scout’s Book of Campfire Stories is a collection that captures the essence of storytelling—adventure, humor, horror, and wisdom—for children and adults alike. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of The Boy Scout’s Book of Campfire Stories is a classic of American literature reimagined for modern readers.

Book The Boy Scout and Other Stories for Boys

Download or read book The Boy Scout and Other Stories for Boys written by Richard Harding Richard Harding Davis and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-07-29 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Rule of the Boy Scouts is every day to do some one a good turn. Not because the copy-books tell you it deserves another, but in spite of that pleasing possibility. If you are a true Scout, until you have performed your act of kindness your day is dark. You are as unhappy as is the grown-up who has begun his day without shaving or reading the New York Sun. But as soon as you have proved yourself you may, with a clear conscience, look the world in the face and untie the knot in your kerchief. Jimmie Reeder untied the accusing knot in his scarf at just ten minutes past eight on a hot August morning after he had given one dime to his sister Sadie. With that she could either witness the first-run films at the Palace, or by dividing her fortune patronize two of the nickel shows on Lenox Avenue. The choice Jimmie left to her. He was setting out for the annual encampment of the Boy Scouts at Hunter's Island, and in the excitement of that adventure even the movies ceased to thrill. But Sadie also could be unselfish. With a heroism of a camp-fire maiden she made a gesture which might have been interpreted to mean she was returning the money.
