Book They Shall Not Have Me

Download or read book They Shall Not Have Me written by Jean Helion and published by Skyhorse Publishing Inc.. This book was released on 2012-05-15 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A daring story of imprisonment and escape under the Nazi regime and a moving and engrossing symbol of resilience and integrity. The French painter Jean Hélion's unique and deeply moving account of his experiences in Nazi prisoner of war camps prefigures the even darker stories that would emerge from the concentration camps. This serious adventure tale begins with Hélion's infantry platoon fleeing from the German army and warplanes as they advanced through France in the early days of the war. The soldiers chant as they march and run, "They shall not have me!" but are quickly captured and sent to hard labor. Writing in English in 1943, after his risky escape to freedom in the United States, Hélion vividly depicts the sights, sounds, and smells of the camps, and shrewdly sizes up both captors and captured. In the deep humanity, humor, and unsentimental intelligence of his observations, we can recognize the artist whose long career included friendships with the likes of Mondrian, Giacometti, and Balthus, and an important role in shaping modern art movements. Hélion's picture of almost two years without his art is a self-portrait of the artist as a man. Skyhorse Publishing, along with our Arcade, Good Books, Sports Publishing, and Yucca imprints, is proud to publish a broad range of biographies, autobiographies, and memoirs. Our list includes biographies on well-known historical figures like Benjamin Franklin, Nelson Mandela, and Alexander Graham Bell, as well as villains from history, such as Heinrich Himmler, John Wayne Gacy, and O. J. Simpson. We have also published survivor stories of World War II, memoirs about overcoming adversity, first-hand tales of adventure, and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

Book My Face Shall Appear on the Banknotes

Download or read book My Face Shall Appear on the Banknotes written by Eleanor Berry and published by Book Guild Publishing. This book was released on 2018-09-26 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the close friendship between a certain Jack Maguire, a politician, finally to become Prime Minister of Britain, and one Natalie Klein, who is a dishonest, thoroughly amoral, promiscuous hearse-driver. She gets up to endless mischief on the bier rack. The two protagonists come from different backgrounds. Maguire hails from the slums of Toxteth and Natalie comes from a wealthy newspaper family in London. Natalie has a perverse fascination for the dead. Maguire, on the other hand, is consumed by ambition and a desire to become Prime Minister. Maguire’s motto, “My face shall appear on the banknotes and my profile will be engraved on the coins” says it all. Natalie goes out of her way to help him become Prime Minister, in return for his kindness towards her, but only by devious means, which are an anathema to him. The story reaches a climax when their paths cross and they fall out. Eleanor Berry is the author of over 20 published books and says her first brush with literature was when she broke windows in Ian Fleming’s house at the age of eight. Of Welsh ancestry, she was born and bred in London. Eleanor specializes in black humour and the works of Gorki, Dostoevsky, Gogol, Edgar Allan Poe and James Hadley Chase have strongly influenced her writings. Two of her novels are available in Russian and a third, which she refrains from naming, is being made into a film. This is Eleanor Berry’s fifteenth book with The Book Guild. She resides in South-West London.

In Death of a Boxer, Pete Carvill sets out to explore the psychology of those who choose to fight and what draws them towards this most dangerous of pursuits. But to write about the death of fighters would only be half the story. Carvill, who has written extensively on boxing and combat sports for fifteen years, will take off his own gloves and pick up a pen to explore the lives of fighters, from the early days in amateur clubs, to established professionals, to those down on their luck and to the retired still hankering for the feeling of being able to do what once came so easily to them. A deep and powerful meditation on the nature of boxing that asks why people do it, what it does for them – and ultimately to them. This may be the most important book on the sport for decades.

Book My Word Shall Guide Thee

Download or read book My Word Shall Guide Thee written by Daniel A.R. Wright and published by Author House. This book was released on 2007-06-04 with total page 625 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My Word Shall Guide Thee contains the radical, revolutionary thought of Daniel Wright which was received by voice, vision and dream. "Eat the book", "Temple Worship", "Kingdomism" and other new writings provide a pure form of worship and a "polit-theo" lifestyle where all of humanity can live in peace and harmony. Beginning in the early 1950's, Daniel committed these revelatory ideas to paper. The original articles were typed, mimeographed, xeroxed, sent around the country and passed by word of mouth. In l966, Daniel founded Padanaram Settlement in southern Indiana. It is a utopian, idealistic society dedicated to equal education, philosophical analysis, social idealism, economic independence, and religious non-denominationalism. Its thriving businesses, stewardship of the land, and its youth assure its continuity today. In the preface of "Utopian Concepts for Social Revolution", Daniel writes: "These are some of my memoirs of my experiences, actualencounters with the Heavenly Host. It is to me a unique reservoir of awakening thoughts basic to the continuity of the human family. It explains the 'why' behind the visible, contains an expose' on false religions, the reason of political abortions, proposes concepts for sound economic security, and guides the 'seeker for truth' past many pitfalls. It is progressive in content of insight and thought."
