I think it’s a barbarous practice, sir. Box. So do I, sir. To be sure, I don’t so much object to it when the pistols are not loaded. Cox. No: I dare say that does make some difference. Box. And yet, sir—on the other hand—doesn’t it strike you as rather a waste of time, for two people to keep firing pistols at one another, with nothing in ’em? Cox. No, sir—not more than any other harmless recreation. Box. Hark ye! Why do you object to marry Penelope Ann? Cox. Because, as I’ve observed already, I can’t abide her. You’ll be very happy with her. Box. Happy! Me! With the consciousness that I have deprived you of such a treasure? No, no, Cox! Cox. Don’t think of me, Box—I shall be sufficiently rewarded by the knowledge of my Box’s happiness. Box. Don’t be absurd, sir! Cox. Then don’t you be ridiculous, sir! Box. I won’t have her! Cox. I won’t have her! Box. I have it! Suppose we draw lots for the lady—eh, Mr. Cox? Cox. That’s fair enough, Mr. Box. Box. Or, what say you to dice? Cox. With all my heart! Dice, by all means—[Eagerly.] Box. [Aside.] That’s lucky! Mrs. Bouncer’s nephew left a pair here yesterday. He sometimes persuades me to have a throw for a trifle, and as he always throws sixes, I suspect they are good ones.

Download or read book The One Act Play Companion written by Colin Dolley and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-01-30 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The one-act play stands apart as a distinct art form with some well known writers providing specialist material, among them Bernard Shaw, Tom Stoppard, Harold Pinter, Caryl Churchill. Alan Ayckbourn, Edward Albee and Tennesee Williams. There are also lesser-known writers with plenty of material to offer, yet sourcing one-act plays to perform is notoriously hard. This companion is the first book to survey the work of over 250 playwrights in an illuminating A-Z guide. Multiple styles, nationalities and periods are covered, offering a treasure trove of compelling moments of theatre waiting to be discovered. Guidance on performing and staging one-act plays is also covered as well as essential contact information and where to apply for performance rights. A chapter introducing the history of the one-act play rounds off the title as a definitive guide.

Download or read book The Cambridge Companion to Victorian and Edwardian Theatre written by Kerry Powell and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-02-19 with total page 517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2004 Companion is designed for readers interested in the creation, production and interpretation of Victorian and Edwardian theatre, both in its own time and on the contemporary stage. The volume opens with a brief overview and introduction surveying the theatre of the time followed by an essay contextualizing the theatre within the frame of Victorian and Edwardian culture as a whole. Succeeding chapters examine specific aspects of performance, production, and theatre, including the music, the actors, stagecraft and the audiences themselves; plays and playwriting and issues of class and gender are also explored. Chapters also deal with comedy, farce and melodrama, while other essays bring forward new topics and approaches that cross the boundaries of traditional investigation, including analysis of the economics of theatre and of the theatricality of personal identity.
Download or read book Prescriptions for Working Statisticians written by Albert Madansky and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first course in statistics, no matter how "good" or "long" it is, typically covers inferential procedures which are valid only if a number of preconditions are satisfied by the data. For example, students are taught about regression procedures valid only if the true residuals are independent, homoscedastic, and normally distributed. But they do not learn how to check for indepen dence, homoscedasticity, or normality, and certainly do not learn how to adjust their data and/or model so that these assumptions are met. To help this student out! I designed a second course, containing a collec tion of statistical diagnostics and prescriptions necessary for the applied statistician so that he can deal with the realities of inference from data, and not merely with the kind of classroom problems where all the data satisfy the assumptions associated with the technique to be taught. At the same time I realized that I was writing a book for a wider audience, namely all those away from the classroom whose formal statistics education ended with such a course and who apply statistical techniques to data.

This section opens with an essay that fills a blank spot on the map of Huxley criticism, James Sexton's study of Huxley and architecture. The volume continues with several articles (including one not from Almeria) on Brave New World and its wider context and closes with essays on Huxley's lifelong struggle with his deficient eyesight and on his view of the art of dying. Download or read book The Adelphi Players written by Dr Cecil Davies and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-16 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cecil Davies' The Adelphi Players: The Theatre of Persons represents a uniquely interesting contribution to our understanding of touring British theatre in the mid-twentieth-century, post-war period. This book will interest everyone - whether student, academic or general reader - who wants to know more about issues concerning the recent history of British theatre. In their values and aims, the Adelphi Players pre-empted many of the post-war developments that we associate with the non-commercial, fringe and community theatre movement. In Richard Heron Ward founder of the Adelphi-Players, we encounter a dramatist, novelist, essayist and poet who has been unusually neglected in terms of our appreciation of the English literature of the broad left in the 1930s, `40s and `50s. The Adelphi Players has been edited by Peter Billingham, who has also provided an introduction placing Ward and the Adelphi players in the wider social, cultural and ideological context.
