Book excerpt: This book gives a detailed account of the holistic research carried out on the analytical data obtained historically on the products of the Nantgarw and Swansea porcelain manufactories which existed for a few years only during the second decade of the 19th Century. A background to the establishment of the two factories, which are linked through the persons of the enigmatic William Billingsley and his kiln manager, Samuel Walker, involves the sourcing of their raw materials and problems associated with the manufacture and distribution of the finished products. A description of the minerals and additives used in porcelain production is recounted to set the scene for the critical evaluation of the comprehensive analytical data which have been published on Nantgarw and Swansea porcelains. For the first time, the author has adopted a nondestructive technique, Raman spectroscopy, to interrogate perfect samples of Nantgarw and Swansea porcelain, as well as a selection of shards from an archaeological excavation carried out at a waste dump at the Nantgarw China Works site. Following these experiments, several questions relating to the porcelain bodies of Swansea and Nantgarw china can be answered and a protocol established for the preliminary evaluation of items of suspect attribution to confirm or not the correctness of their assignment to these Welsh porcelain factories.

This book belonged to John Bowcock, one of the managers at Bow (d. 1765); subsequently to his brother, William, of Chester, painter; and in the 19th century to Lady Charlotte Schreiber. Acquired by the donor on the 23rd September, 1924 at 'Stevens rooms', Covent Garden. In the library of the Department of British and Mediaeval Antiquities at the British Museum are 'the Bowcock Papers' (Bow Porcelain 1774-1776, no. 152), comprising the early letters of John Bowcock and other material relating to the Bow factory, but the larger and more valuable collection of memoranda, etc., from the library of William Bowcock (who had obtained them from his brother, John), after being in the possession of Lady Schreiber in the 19th century, was sold from her collection and is now lost. In the Department of British and Mediaeval Antiquities is also the private ledger-book for 1769-1770 of William Duesbury, proprietor of the Derby-China Works, who bought up the Bow factory in 1775 or 1776 (Sotheby's sale-cat., 16-18 July 1962, lot 624). This catalogue focuses on French ébénisterie furniture in the Rococo style dating from 1735 to 1760. These splendid objects directly reflect the tastes of the Museum’s founder, J. Paul Getty, who started collecting in this area in 1938 and continued until his death in 1976. The Museum’s collection is particularly rich in examples created by the most talented cabinet masters then active in Paris, including Bernard van Risenburgh II (after 1696–ca. 1766), Jacques Dubois (1694–1763), and Jean-François Oeben (1721–1763). Working for members of the French royal family and aristocracy, these craftsmen excelled at producing veneered and marquetried pieces of furniture (tables, cabinets, and chests of drawers) fashionable for their lavish surfaces, refined gilt-bronze mounts, and elaborate design. These objects were renowned throughout Europe at a time when Paris was considered the capital of good taste. The entry on each work comprises both a curatorial section, with description and commentary, and a conservation report, with construction diagrams. An introduction by Anne-Lise Desmas traces the collection’s acquisition history, and two technical essays by Arlen Heginbotham present methodologies and findings on the analysis of gilt-bronze mounts and lacquer.
