Book The Cultural Aesthetics of Eighteenth Century Porcelain

Download or read book The Cultural Aesthetics of Eighteenth Century Porcelain written by MichaelE. Yonan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the eighteenth century, porcelain held significant cultural and artistic importance. This collection represents one of the first thorough scholarly attempts to explore the diversity of the medium's cultural meanings. Among the volume's purposes is to expose porcelain objects to the analytical and theoretical rigor which is routinely applied to painting, sculpture and architecture, and thereby to reposition eighteenth-century porcelain within new and more fruitful interpretative frameworks. The authors also analyze the aesthetics of porcelain and its physical characteristics, particularly the way its tactile and visual qualities reinforced and challenged the social processes within which porcelain objects were viewed, collected, and used. The essays in this volume treat objects such as figurines representing British theatrical celebrities, a boxwood and ebony figural porcelain stand, works of architecture meant to approximate porcelain visually, porcelain flowers adorning objects such as candelabra and perfume burners, and tea sets decorated with unusual designs. The geographical areas covered in the collection include China, North Africa, Spain, France, Italy, Britain, America, Japan, Austria, and Holland.

Book excerpt: Description: Apparently the earliest extant record of the porcelain factory established not, as was formerly thought, at Stratford-le-Bow, Middlesex, but at Stratford Langthorne, in the parish of West Ham, Essex. See G.H. Tait, 'Some consequences of the Bow Porcelain Special Exhibition', Apollo, lxxi, 1960, pp. 93- 94, and further W. Chaffers, 'The Bow Factory called New Canton', The Art Journal, 1869, pp. 239-243; L. Jewitt, The Ceramic Art of Great Britain, 1878, i, pp. 198-214; Chaffers, Marks and Monograms on European and Oriental Pottery and Porcelain, 13th edition, 1912, pp. 91O-936; F. Hurlbutt, Bow Porcelain, 1926; British Museum Exhibition Catalogue, 1959: Bow Porcelain 1774-1776, no. 154. The binding is of brown suede leather with blind-tooled border. This book belonged to John Bowcock, one of the managers at Bow (d. 1765); subsequently to his brother, William, of Chester, painter; and in the 19th century to Lady Charlotte Schreiber. Acquired by the donor on the 23rd September, 1924 at 'Stevens rooms', Covent Garden. In the library of the Department of British and Mediaeval Antiquities at the British Museum are 'the Bowcock Papers' (Bow Porcelain 1774-1776, no. 152), comprising the early letters of John Bowcock and other material relating to the Bow factory, but the larger and more valuable collection of memoranda, etc., from the library of William Bowcock (who had obtained them from his brother, John), after being in the possession of Lady Schreiber in the 19th century, was sold from her collection and is now lost. In the Department of British and Mediaeval Antiquities is also the private ledger-book for 1769-1770 of William Duesbury, proprietor of the Derby-China Works, who bought up the Bow factory in 1775 or 1776 (Sotheby's sale-cat., 16-18 July 1962, lot 624). Presented by Mrs Dora Radford through her son, Flight Lieut. B.N. Radford.

Book The Oxford Handbook of the Georgian Theatre 1737 1832

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of the Georgian Theatre 1737 1832 written by Julia Swindells and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-01-16 with total page 786 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of the Georgian Theatre 1737-1832 provides an essential guide to theatre in Britain between the passing of the Stage Licensing Act in 1737 and the Reform Act of 1832 — a period of drama long neglected but now receiving significant scholarly attention. Written by specialists from a range of disciplines, its forty essays both introduce students and scholars to the key texts and contexts of the Georgian theatre and also push the boundaries of the field, asking questions that will animate the study of drama in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries for years to come. The Handbook gives equal attention to the range of dramatic forms — not just tragedy and comedy, but the likes of melodrama and pantomime — as they developed and overlapped across the period, and to the occasions, communities, and materialities of theatre production. It includes sections on historiography, the censorship and regulation of drama, theatre and the Romantic canon, women and the stage, and the performance of race and empire. In doing so, the Handbook shows the centrality of theatre to Georgian culture and politics, and paints a picture of a stage defined by generic fluidity and experimentation; by networks of performance that spread far beyond London; by professional women who played pivotal roles in every aspect of production; and by its complex mediation of contemporary attitudes of class, race, and gender.

Book Nantgarw and Swansea Porcelains

Download or read book Nantgarw and Swansea Porcelains written by Howell G.M. Edwards and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-04-30 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives a detailed account of the holistic research carried out on the analytical data obtained historically on the products of the Nantgarw and Swansea porcelain manufactories which existed for a few years only during the second decade of the 19th Century. A background to the establishment of the two factories, which are linked through the persons of the enigmatic William Billingsley and his kiln manager, Samuel Walker, involves the sourcing of their raw materials and problems associated with the manufacture and distribution of the finished products. A description of the minerals and additives used in porcelain production is recounted to set the scene for the critical evaluation of the comprehensive analytical data which have been published on Nantgarw and Swansea porcelains. For the first time, the author has adopted a nondestructive technique, Raman spectroscopy, to interrogate perfect samples of Nantgarw and Swansea porcelain, as well as a selection of shards from an archaeological excavation carried out at a waste dump at the Nantgarw China Works site. Following these experiments, several questions relating to the porcelain bodies of Swansea and Nantgarw china can be answered and a protocol established for the preliminary evaluation of items of suspect attribution to confirm or not the correctness of their assignment to these Welsh porcelain factories.
