Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bourdon's Arithmetic: Containing a Discussion of the Theory of Numbers; Translated From the French of M. Bourbon, and Adapted, to the Use of the Colleges and Academies of the United States The first numbers are, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine. These numbers are called Simple units, or, units of the first order. Adding a new unit to the number nine, we form the number ten, which we regard as a new denomination, or, spe cies of unit called a ten, or, a unit of the second order. We count by tens in the same manner as we have counted by smple units. Thus, we say, one ten, two tens, &c., &c. Ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty, sixty, 810. Between ten and twenty there are nine other numbers, which in English have the names, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nine teen; names established by usage, showing by their derivation, the addition of the preceding Simple units successively to the unit of the second order. Book Arithmetic Groups and Their Generalizations

Download or read book Arithmetic Groups and Their Generalizations written by Lizhen Ji and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2008 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In one guise or another, many mathematicians are familiar with certain arithmetic groups, such as $\mathbf{Z}$ or $\textrm{SL}(n, \mathbf{Z})$. Yet, many applications of arithmetic groups and many connections to other subjects within mathematics are less well known. Indeed, arithmetic groups admit many natural and important generalizations. The purpose of this expository book is to explain, through some brief and informal comments and extensive references, what arithmetic groups and their generalizations are, why they are important to study, and how they can be understood and applied to many fields, such as analysis, geometry, topology, number theory, representation theory, and algebraic geometry. It is hoped that such an overview will shed a light on the important role played by arithmetic groups in modern mathematics. Titles in this series are co-published with International Press, Cambridge, MA.Table of Contents: Introduction; General comments on references; Examples of basic arithmetic groups; General arithmetic subgroups and locally symmetric spaces; Discrete subgroups of Lie groups and arithmeticity of lattices in Lie groups; Different completions of $\mathbb{Q}$ and $S$-arithmetic groups over number fields; Global fields and $S$-arithmetic groups over function fields; Finiteness properties of arithmetic and $S$-arithmetic groups; Symmetric spaces, Bruhat-Tits buildings and their arithmetic quotients; Compactifications of locally symmetric spaces; Rigidity of locally symmetric spaces; Automorphic forms and automorphic representations for general arithmetic groups; Cohomology of arithmetic groups; $K$-groups of rings of integers and $K$-groups of group rings; Locally homogeneous manifolds and period domains; Non-cofinite discrete groups, geometrically finite groups; Large scale geometry of discrete groups; Tree lattices; Hyperbolic groups; Mapping class groups and outer automorphism groups of free groups; Outer automorphism group of free groups and the outer spaces; References; Index. Review from Mathematical Reviews: ...the author deserves credit for having done the tremendous job of encompassing every aspect of arithmetic groups visible in today's mathematics in a systematic manner; the book should be an important guide for some time to come.(AMSIP/43.

Book Number Theory and Geometry An Introduction to Arithmetic Geometry

Download or read book Number Theory and Geometry An Introduction to Arithmetic Geometry written by Álvaro Lozano-Robledo and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2019-03-21 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geometry and the theory of numbers are as old as some of the oldest historical records of humanity. Ever since antiquity, mathematicians have discovered many beautiful interactions between the two subjects and recorded them in such classical texts as Euclid's Elements and Diophantus's Arithmetica. Nowadays, the field of mathematics that studies the interactions between number theory and algebraic geometry is known as arithmetic geometry. This book is an introduction to number theory and arithmetic geometry, and the goal of the text is to use geometry as the motivation to prove the main theorems in the book. For example, the fundamental theorem of arithmetic is a consequence of the tools we develop in order to find all the integral points on a line in the plane. Similarly, Gauss's law of quadratic reciprocity and the theory of continued fractions naturally arise when we attempt to determine the integral points on a curve in the plane given by a quadratic polynomial equation. After an introduction to the theory of diophantine equations, the rest of the book is structured in three acts that correspond to the study of the integral and rational solutions of linear, quadratic, and cubic curves, respectively. This book describes many applications including modern applications in cryptography; it also presents some recent results in arithmetic geometry. With many exercises, this book can be used as a text for a first course in number theory or for a subsequent course on arithmetic (or diophantine) geometry at the junior-senior level.

Book Problems and Recent Methods in Operator Theory

Download or read book Problems and Recent Methods in Operator Theory written by Fernanda Botelho and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2017-04-18 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the Workshop on Problems and Recent Methods in Operator Theory, held at the University of Memphis, Memphis, TN, from October 15–16, 2015 and the AMS Special Session on Advances in Operator Theory and Applications, in Memory of James Jamison, held at the University of Memphis, Memphis, TN, from October 17–18, 2015. Operator theory is at the root of several branches of mathematics and offers a broad range of challenging and interesting research problems. It also provides powerful tools for the development of other areas of science including quantum theory, physics and mechanics. Isometries have applications in solid-state physics. Hermitian operators play an integral role in quantum mechanics very much due to their “nice” spectral properties. These powerful connections demonstrate the impact of operator theory in various branches of science. The articles in this volume address recent problems and research advances in operator theory. Highlighted topics include spectral, structural and geometric properties of special types of operators on Banach spaces, with emphasis on isometries, weighted composition operators, multi-circular projections on function spaces, as well as vector valued function spaces and spaces of analytic functions. This volume gives a succinct overview of state-of-the-art techniques from operator theory as well as applications to classical problems and long-standing open questions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book consists of contributions by the participants of the Fifth Conference on Function Spaces, held at Southern Illinois University in May of 2006. The papers cover a broad range of topics, including spaces and algebras of analytic functions of one and of many variables (and operators on such spaces), $L{p $-spaces, spaces of Banach-valued functions, isometries of function spaces, geometry of Banach spaces, and other related subjects. The goal of the conference was to bring together mathematicians interested in various problems related to function spaces and to facilitate the exchange of ideas between people working on similar problems. Hence, the majority of papers in this book are accessible to non-experts. Some articles contain expositions of known results and discuss open problems, others contain new results.

Book A Station Favorable to the Pursuits of Science Primary Materials in the History of Mathematics at the United States Military Academy

Download or read book A Station Favorable to the Pursuits of Science Primary Materials in the History of Mathematics at the United States Military Academy written by Joe Albree and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2000 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reveals the rich collection of mathematical works located at the nation's first military school, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. It outlines the relevant history of the Academy, discusses the mathematics department and curriculum, and describes the development of the library during the nineteenth century. A major part of this book is an annotated catalog of the more than 1300 works published between 1496 and 1915 found in the West Point library. Mathematics and its instruction greatly influenced the development of the Academy, the technological growth of America's army, and the standards of the military profession. These events, in turn, were crucial to the overall development of mathematics, mechanics, and engineering during the nineteenth century in the United States. Three individuals played a prominent role in this chronicle: Sylvanus Thayer, Charles Davies, and Albert Church. Listed are rare and historically valuable works in a broad range of mathematical subjects. The collection clearly shows the strong European influence on the early Academy. Also listed are numerous textbooks by West Point faculty and graduates; significant contributions were made by these writers to algebra, geometry, calculus, descriptive geometry, mechanics, surveying, and mathematics education. This book provides an important resource for the general audience as well as for those in pursuit of more scholarly information. It contains many interesting photographs and valuable details about the West Point collection. It is a must-have for anyone interested in mathematical books and collections.
