Thus, it is also our hope that this book will serve as a resource for educational leaders in the area of faculty development, as well as academic administrators whose role is to recruit, retain, and evaluate Faculty of Color at comprehensive universities.

This book explains not only how we have come to tell the story of the young black male crisis, but examines the gender of the American social science tradition from its white male supremacist foundations. This is a story of pioneering black social scientists as much as it is a history of the changing perceptions, ideals, and shifting depictions of black and white manhood over nearly a century. Offering a fresh perspective on the history of ideas of black manhood, author Malinda Lindquist builds upon the foundational works of gender, intellectual, and African American historians, as well as literary critics, arguing that much of what we think we know about black men is a product of how the social sciences have explicitly informed and subtly molded how we as a nation approach and answer the question, "Who are men?" She conveys how black social scientists’ theory of masculinist social change has been reduced over the decades from a wide-ranging political, cultural, scientific, and economic agenda to combat white male supremacy to an ever diminishing vision of the race crisis as a problem of the young black male that barely engages with the broader white male supremacist traditions of institutionalized violence, social injustice, and economic inequality. Until this masculinist social science tradition is replaced with a gender-neutral vision of democratic social change and a commitment to a radical equality of opportunity and outcome, we are likely to continue to identify black boys as the problem rather than as a provocative, masculinist, politically-potent symptom of the continuing significance of race and class in a troubled nation.

Metaeconomics addresses the problem of placing too much emphasis on the market or the government, and thus argues that seeing the link between ego and empathy, self- and other-interest, and market and government will lead to a more just, fair, and sustainable polity. The unique Dual Interest Theory proposes that ego-based self-interest and empathy-based other-interest are joint and internal to each person: it maintains the original proposition from Adam Smith that each person maximizes their own-interest, which Metaeconomics makes clear involves balancing the two joint interests, although self-interest is more primal. The book begins with an explanation of how Metaeconomics connects the other kinds of economics. The book then provides a series of applications of Metaeconomics in heated policy issues, such as elections, finance, family, food, health, natural resources, education, taxes, and extreme inequality, among others. Finally, the book concludes that the only way to save capitalism is to bring empathy into both private and public actions and bring about a more humane balance in market and government.

Book excerpt: Incomplete Category Fronting is a detailed investigation of the syntax of incomplete category fronting in German, carried out from a cross-linguistic perspective. The study presents a wealth of empirical evidence involving unbound traces created by remnant topicalization, wh-movement, scrambling, left dislocation, and extraposition. Four characteristic properties of remnant movement are identified that pose severe problems for a representational movement theory. It is argued that these properties can be fruitfully addressed on the basis of Chomsky's minimalist program, and that they follow from a derivational movement theory that incorporates the Barriers Condition, the Strict Cycle Condition, Fewest Steps, Last Resort, and the Minimal Link Condition but completely dispenses with surface filters. Incomplete Category Fronting provides an empirical underpinning for the minimalist program and presents a powerful argument for a derivational theory of grammar. Audience: Incomplete Category Fronting will interest all linguists working on theoretical syntax, Germanic syntax or the syntax-semantics interface.
