Part II explores a large number of important results of both theoretical and practical nature of the field, including discussions of the smooth and local interpolant with small K-th derivative, the occurrence and solution of boundary value reaction systems, the posteriori error estimates, and boundary problem solvers for first order systems based on deferred corrections. Part III highlights the practical applications of the boundary value problems, specifically a high-order finite-difference method for the solution of two-point boundary-value problems on a uniform mesh. This book will prove useful to mathematicians, engineers, and physicists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book serves as a set of lecture notes for a senior undergraduate level course on the introduction to numerical computation, which was developed through 4 semesters of teaching the course over 10 years. The book requires minimum background knowledge from the students, including only a three-semester of calculus, and a bit on matrices. The book covers many of the introductory topics for a first course in numerical computation, which fits in the short time frame of a semester course. Topics range from polynomial approximations and interpolation, to numerical methods for ODEs and PDEs. Emphasis was made more on algorithm development, basic mathematical ideas behind the algorithms, and the implementation in Matlab. The book is supplemented by two sets of videos, available through the author's YouTube channel. Homework problem sets are provided for each chapter, and complete answer sets are available for instructors upon request. The second edition contains a set of selected advanced topics, written in a self-contained manner, suitable for self-learning or as additional material for an honored version of the course. Videos are also available for these added topics.

Book Compact Finite Difference Schemes for Mixed Initial boundary Value Problems

Download or read book Compact Finite Difference Schemes for Mixed Initial boundary Value Problems written by Richard B. Philips and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This paper discusses a class of compact second order accurate finite difference equations for mixed initial-boundary value problems for hyperbolic and convective-diffusion equations. Convergence is proved by means of an energy argument and both types of equations are solved by similar algorithms. For hyperbolic equations an extension of the Lax-Wendroff method is described which incorporates dissipative boundary conditions. Upwind-downwind differencing techniques arise as the formal hyperbolic limit of the convective-diffusion equation. Finally, a finite difference 'chain-rule' transforms the schemes from rectangular to quadrilateral subdomains" -- abstract.

Book Boundary Value Problems for Systems of Differential Difference and Fractional Equations

Download or read book Boundary Value Problems for Systems of Differential Difference and Fractional Equations written by Johnny Henderson and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2015-10-30 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boundary Value Problems for Systems of Differential, Difference and Fractional Equations: Positive Solutions discusses the concept of a differential equation that brings together a set of additional constraints called the boundary conditions. As boundary value problems arise in several branches of math given the fact that any physical differential equation will have them, this book will provide a timely presentation on the topic. Problems involving the wave equation, such as the determination of normal modes, are often stated as boundary value problems. To be useful in applications, a boundary value problem should be well posed. This means that given the input to the problem there exists a unique solution, which depends continuously on the input. Much theoretical work in the field of partial differential equations is devoted to proving that boundary value problems arising from scientific and engineering applications are in fact well-posed. - Explains the systems of second order and higher orders differential equations with integral and multi-point boundary conditions - Discusses second order difference equations with multi-point boundary conditions - Introduces Riemann-Liouville fractional differential equations with uncoupled and coupled integral boundary conditions

Book The Numerical Solution of Ordinary and Partial Differential Equations

Download or read book The Numerical Solution of Ordinary and Partial Differential Equations written by Granville Sewell and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Numerical Solution of Ordinary and Partial Differential Equations is an introduction to the numerical solution of ordinary and partial differential equations. Finite difference methods for solving partial differential equations are mostly classical low order formulas, easy to program but not ideal for problems with poorly behaved solutions or (especially) for problems in irregular multidimensional regions. FORTRAN77 programs are used to implement many of the methods studied. Comprised of six chapters, this book begins with a review of direct methods for the solution of linear systems, with emphasis on the special features of the linear systems that arise when differential equations are solved. The next four chapters deal with the more commonly used finite difference methods for solving a variety of problems, including both ordinary differential equations and partial differential equations, and both initial value and boundary value problems. The final chapter is an overview of the basic ideas behind the finite element method and covers the Galerkin method for boundary value problems. Examples using piecewise linear trial functions, cubic hermite trial functions, and triangular elements are presented. This monograph is appropriate for senior-level undergraduate or first-year graduate students of mathematics.

Book The Method of Summary Representation for Numerical Solution of Problems of Mathematical Physics

Download or read book The Method of Summary Representation for Numerical Solution of Problems of Mathematical Physics written by G. N. Polozhii and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-07-10 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pure and Applied Mathematics, Volume 79: The Method of Summary Representation for Numerical Solution of Problems of Mathematical Physics presents the numerical solution of two-dimensional and three-dimensional boundary-value problems of mathematical physics. This book focuses on the second-order and fourth-order linear differential equations. Organized into two chapters, this volume begins with an overview of ordinary finite-difference equations and the general solutions of certain specific finite-difference equations. This text then examines the various methods of successive approximation that are used exclusively for solving finite-difference equations. This book discusses as well the established formula of summary representation for certain finite-difference operators that are associated with partial differential equations of mathematical physics. The final chapter deals with the formula of summary representation to enable the researcher to write the solution of the corresponding systems of linear algebraic equations in a simple form. This book is a valuable resource for mathematicians and physicists.

Book Numerical Solution of Boundary Value Problems for Ordinary Differential Equations

Download or read book Numerical Solution of Boundary Value Problems for Ordinary Differential Equations written by Uri M. Ascher and published by SIAM. This book was released on 1994-12-01 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the most comprehensive, up-to-date account of the popular numerical methods for solving boundary value problems in ordinary differential equations. It aims at a thorough understanding of the field by giving an in-depth analysis of the numerical methods by using decoupling principles. Numerous exercises and real-world examples are used throughout to demonstrate the methods and the theory. Although first published in 1988, this republication remains the most comprehensive theoretical coverage of the subject matter, not available elsewhere in one volume. Many problems, arising in a wide variety of application areas, give rise to mathematical models which form boundary value problems for ordinary differential equations. These problems rarely have a closed form solution, and computer simulation is typically used to obtain their approximate solution. This book discusses methods to carry out such computer simulations in a robust, efficient, and reliable manner.
