Book excerpt: Within this carefully presented monograph, the authors extend the universal phenomenon of synchronization from finite-dimensional dynamical systems of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) to infinite-dimensional dynamical systems of partial differential equations (PDEs). By combining synchronization with controllability, they introduce the study of synchronization to the field of control and add new perspectives to the investigation of synchronization for systems of PDEs. With a focus on synchronization for a coupled system of wave equations, the text is divided into three parts corresponding to Dirichlet, Neumann, and coupled Robin boundary controls. Each part is then subdivided into chapters detailing exact boundary synchronization and approximate boundary synchronization, respectively. The core intention is to give artificial intervention to the evolution of state variables through appropriate boundary controls for realizing the synchronization in a finite time, creating a novel viewpoint into the investigation of synchronization for systems of partial differential equations, and revealing some essentially dissimilar characteristics from systems of ordinary differential equations. Primarily aimed at researchers and graduate students of applied mathematics and applied sciences, this text will particularly appeal to those interested in applied PDEs and control theory for distributed parameter systems.

This kind of controllability is useful in practice as it does not require any precisely given final state to be attained at a suitable time t=T by means of boundary controls, instead it requires the state to exactly fit any given demand (profile) on one or more nodes after a suitable time t=T by means of boundary controls. In this book we present a general discussion of this kind of controllability for general 1-D first order quasilinear hyperbolic systems and for general 1-D quasilinear wave equations on an interval as well as on a tree-like network using a modular-structure construtive method, suggested in LI Tatsien's monograph "Controllability and Observability for Quasilinear Hyperbolic Systems"(2010), and we establish a complete theory on the local exact boundary controllability of nodal profile for 1-D quasilinear hyperbolic systems.

Book excerpt: For problems defined on infinite domains, the most common computational methods use an artificial boundary gamma in order to make the computation finite. Since data are usually not available at this boundary, conditions must be used that somehow are related to the behavior of the solution outside the computational domain omega. This means that some apriori knowledge of the solution is necessary. In particular, if the system of differential equations has variable coefficients or is non-linear, then we shall make the coefficients constant outside omega. In this way there is a possibility to compute the solution exactly, or to compute it approximately in a simple way outside omega, such that boundary conditions can be derived on gamma. A previous work in the basic principles concerning artificial boundaries for hyperbolic systems were discussed. The one-dimensional case was analyzed thoroughly, and it was shown under what conditions it is possible to derive accurate conditions at the artificial boundary. A two-dimensional example was also treated, and a method leading to exact conditions for steady state solutions was presented. This paper at treats hyperbolic systems in two space-dimensions with non-zero initial data also outside omega.

Book excerpt: This paper is concerned with linear hyperbolic systems of partial differential equations for which certain of the associated propagation speeds are a great deal larger than the other propagation speeds. In certain cases the fast modes allowed by such a system are not present in the true physical solution. Yet the fact that such modes are allowed means that when one tries to compute a numerical solution to an initial-boundary value problem, the errors generated can propagate quite rapidly. In particular, when the boundary data used for the computation are less accurate then the initial data, the fast modes can cause a rapid contamination of the calculation in the interior. To prevent this, one would like to have boundary conditions which prevent fast waves from entering the region. The goal of this paper is to find such conditions.
