Book Boundaries between Promotion and Progression during Carcinogenesis

Download or read book Boundaries between Promotion and Progression during Carcinogenesis written by Oscar Sudilovsky and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pUrpOSE! of this conference was not to define the two areas that are being bound, which might be a well nigh impossible proposition. Rather, its focus was to concentrate on the mechanistic similarities between promotion and progression. Are the areas involved within the boundaries a continuum? Are these two simultaneous processes? Or are some of the affected cells in the stage of promotion when at the same time others have undergone irreversi ble changes tha. t position them in the stage of progression? Or are these two stages the same thing, but called by different names? To explore such concepts we assembled investigators with various back grounds and asked them to specifically address these and other questions about "The Boundaries", within the context of the session to which they con tributed. The conference lasted two and a half days, from Wednesday to Friday. There were at least four speakers per session with morning and after noon sessions each day, except on Friday when the meeting ended at noon. The first day, each speaker had 25 minutes to present a position, followed by five minutes of discussion. At the end of the session there were 40 or 50 minutes of exchange on all the issues examined. For the remaining days, there were 25 minutes of presentation and 15 minutes of discussion.

Book Biology of Root Formation and Development

Download or read book Biology of Root Formation and Development written by Arie Altman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the majority of the presentations of the Second International Symposium on the Biology of Root Formation and Development that was hcld in Jerusa lem, Israel, June 23---28, 1996. Following the First Symposium on the Biology of Adventi tious Root Formation, held in Dallas. USA, 1993, we perceived the need to include all kinds of roots, not only the shoot-borne ones. The endogenous signals that control root formation. and the subsequent growth and development processes, are very much alike, re gardless of the sites and sources of origin of the roots. Therefore, we included in the Sec ond Symposium contributions on both shoot-borne (i.e., adventitious) roots and root-borne (i.e., lateral) roots. Plant roots have remained an exciting and an intriguing field of sciencc. During thc years that followed the first symposium, an exceptional proliferation of interest in root biology has developed, associated with the intensive research activity in this field and the contemporary developments in the understanding of root function and development. New methods have been applied, and old ideas and interprctations werc rccxamined. Alto gether, it became necessary to update our viewpoints and to expand them.

Book Mutation Cancer and Malformation

Download or read book Mutation Cancer and Malformation written by Ernest H.Y. Chu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 852 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the early 1930s, when I was a graduate student and later a post-doctoral researcher at the National Research Council for the University of Wisconsin at Madison, we had the opportunity to get acquainted with many graduate students from China who were sent to the University for training in modern basic sciences as well as social sciences. The University of Wisconsin continues to graduate a large number of Chinese students. Economic conditions in the 1930s were very precarious for the United States and other parts of the world. Many of us students grew closer together because we were living on similarly tight budgets. As a matter of fact, we subleased a part of our apartment in Madison to some Chinese graduate students. This was a very nice opportunity for us to learn about the scientific and cultural back ground of our Chinese friends. Many of them came from the interior of China and had had very little opportunity to become acquainted with people from a western culture. Living with these students was a very pleasant and educational experience which gave us a good pic ture of the cultural life and educational system of China at that time--an intimate picture that one normally would not see without travelling in that country.

Book Food Factors for Cancer Prevention

Download or read book Food Factors for Cancer Prevention written by Hajime Ohigashi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 661 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemoprevention is currently regarded as one of the most promising avenues for the control of cancer, with human epidemiological and animal studies indicating that the risk of cancer may be modified by changes in diet. Over 100 papers are collected in this volume, the proceedings of the International Conference on Food Factors: Chemistry and Cancer Prevention, held in Hamamatsu, Japan, in December 1995. Special emphasis is placed on chemical, biological, and molecular properties of phytochemicals in teas, fruit, vegetables, herbs, and spices, and on their potential for cancer prevention. Also discussed are the cancer-preventive effects of vitamins, lipids, carotenoids, flavonoids, and other components of diet. The findings presented here will be invaluable to all who are interested in diet and cancer prevention, and especially to biochemists, pharmacologists, food scientists, and nutritionists.

Book Recent Advances in Quantitative Methods in Cancer and Human Health Risk Assessment

Download or read book Recent Advances in Quantitative Methods in Cancer and Human Health Risk Assessment written by Lutz Edler and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2005-05-27 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human health risk assessment involves the measuring of risk of exposure to disease, with a view to improving disease prevention. Mathematical, biological, statistical, and computational methods play a key role in exposure assessment, hazard assessment and identification, and dose-response modelling. Recent Advances in Quantitative Methods in Cancer and Human Health Risk Assessment is a comprehensive text that accounts for the wealth of new biological data as well as new biological, toxicological, and medical approaches adopted in risk assessment. Book Metabolic Barriers in Cancer and Cancer Therapy

Download or read book Metabolic Barriers in Cancer and Cancer Therapy written by Martin Böttcher and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-05-31 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer immunometabolism is an emerging field exploring cellular bioenergetic alterations in both tumor and immune cells and their impact on tumor immune surveillance and therapy resistance. Multiple concepts have emerged including metabolic competition over nutrients and the secretion of (toxic) metabolic byproducts by cancer cells. Moreover, cancer cells are capable of utilizing and shaping their surrounding microenvironment to their favor, e.g. by reprogramming stroma cells to produce essential nutrients or by providing metabolically relevant signaling molecules to foster the accumulation of immunosuppressive cells. Most importantly, this crosstalk within the tumor microenvironment is mostly multi-directional and a better understanding of the complex interactions may pave the way to improved and/or novel therapeutic strategies to overcome those obstacles.
