  • Author : Philip Woodhouse
  • Publisher : BalboaPress

Download or read book Sea Kayaking written by Philip Woodhouse and published by BalboaPress. This book was released on 2013-12-16 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Sea Kayaking, , comprehensive guide for those who travel the open waters in the Southern Hemisphere, Philip Woodhouse, Australian paddler and Royal Australian Air Force veteran, shares his years of experience, technical training, and military teaching skills. What began as a personal reference was soon developed as a training manual, recommended by the Victorian Sea Kayak Club to its membersand East Coast Kayaking to their patrons and Australian Canoeing students. Sea Kayaking covers boat design, kit requirements, paddling skills, health and well-being, meteorology, the ocean environment, navigation, communications, conservation andminimal-impact camping, conservation, seamanship, electrical bilge pumps, solar panels, light sources, boat repairs, leadership, risk management, basic safety and survival strategies , as well as a brief overview about the history and various types of canoeing.. There is also a comprehensive glossary to assist the reader in understanding the terms and concepts discussed in the main text. Woodhouses work differs from most manuals about sea kayaking in that it is written from the perspective of someone who paddles the Southern Hemisphere. As such, the major differences between the two hemispheresweather patterns, navigation, laws, and terminologyare discussed, as well as compared to their Northern Hemisphere counterparts. In the end, paddling skills are paddling skills, hypothermia is hypothermia, and twenty-five-knot winds are twenty-five-knot winds. A three-metre tidal range can still produce a long haul across mud flats when the tide is outand landing through two-metre surf is still scary (though a lot of fun), no matter where you paddle.

Book Australian Coastal Systems

Download or read book Australian Coastal Systems written by Andrew D. Short and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-08-29 with total page 1261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the entire coast and beaches and barrier systems of Australia. It covers the coastal processes and systems that form and impact Australia's 30.000 km coast, 12.000 beaches and 2750 barrier systems. These processes include geology, geomorphology, climate, waves, tides, currents, sediment supply, as well as coastal ecosystems. The coast is divided into tropical northern and southern temperate provinces, within which are seven divisions, 23 regions and 354 coastal sediment compartments each of which is described in detail in the 34 chapters. Within these systems are the full range of wave through tide-dominated beaches and barriers ranging from cheniers to massive transgressive dune systems together with a range of onshore and longshore sand transport systems. This is an up to date reference for the entire coast, its present condition and likely responses to the impacts of climate change.

Book excerpt: The world’s oceans cover about 70% of our planet. To safeguard the delicate ecological and environmental functions of the oceans and their remarkable biodiversity, networks of marine protected areas are being created. In some of these areas, human activity is restricted to non-exploitative activities and in others it is managed in a sustainable way. Australia is at the forefront of marine conservation, with one of the largest systems of marine protected areas in the world. Big, Bold and Blue: Lessons from Australia’s Marine Protected Areas captures Australia’s experience, sharing important lessons from the Great Barrier Reef and many other extraordinary marine protected areas. It presents real-world examples, leading academic research, perspectives on government policy, and information from indigenous sea country management, non-governmental organisations, and commercial and recreational fishing sectors. The lessons learnt during the rapid expansion of Australia’s marine protected areas, both positive and negative, will aid and advise other nations in their own marine conservation efforts.
