Book excerpt: "This volume presents the work of the Swiss-born architect who worked as an assistant to such architecture giants as Le Corbusier and Louis I. Kahn before starting his own firm in 1970 and achieving international fame. Botta's characteristic respect for topographical conditions and regional sensibilities, his deft craftmanship, and the importance of geometric order in his work are evidenced in thiry projects that range from smaller residential buildings to such grandiose projects as the Church of San Giovanni Battista, the Jean Tinguely Museum and, most famously, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. This detailed study also includes the designs he created for furniture and the stage. Mario Botta: Architectural Poetics is a thorough survey of the architectural and design work that launched Botta into the pantheon of modern architecture."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Mario Botta Architetti

Download or read book Mario Botta Architetti written by Mario Botta and published by Images Publishing. This book was released on 2017 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: -Showcases Mario Botta's portfolio of projects and contemporary design talents in stunning full-colour photography, with detailed plans and drawings and comprehensive profile descriptions -Celebrates almost 40 works of this prolific architect, and is a superb compendium to IMAGES' highly successful Leading Architects Series -Profiles the insight into the influences of this firm and its practice, while capturing its vision for the future of design, emerging trends and influences that shapes its work We recognize Mario Botta's buildings for their strong presence. His architecture is not ephemeral. It shapes the mass firmly and precisely. It touches the ground with self-reliance. A building by Mario Botta is an autonomous object. It comprises an ordered world of its own make. It is standing in dialogue with the urban tissue, but it establishes its own order as if it aims at differentiation instead of integration. Architectural order represents the core of his personal idiom. It is a well structured, compositional order which organises everything into a whole, as an underlying thread that connects and brings together houses on the mountains to museums and churches, banks and commercial buildings to buildings on the ground and buildings underground, different buildings at different places in time. The themes that underlie Mario Botta's architecture are ties that connect and spines that support, common threads that bind one building to the next. His architecture is one of mass. It is then of no surprise that mass is the first thing to be defined and ordered, in his creative process. The volume of his buildings is mostly composed by one or more primary solids. Volume is thus an a-priori for Botta. It is conceived beforehand, the starting point to the adventure of architectural design.

Book excerpt: Part aphorism and part manifesto, this book by Canadian architect Reza Aliabadi (RZLBD) references his ideas and thoughts about space. He suggests ‘the empty room’ as the very essence of architecture, and ‘the spatial experience’ as its highest mandate. Reza revisits architecture – not as the walls that enclose the space – rather the space in-between the walls. What he calls an “anti-architecture” of invisible voids. Today architecture has fallen short as a discipline and has instead converted into an industry, part of commercial establishment. Accordingly it has given up its capacity to offer contributions and has been reduced to being a service. It has become all about a form-making exercise and dressing it up with a fashionable skin. Now, it is necessary or rather urgent to pause, take a moment, go inward, search for the essentials, and hope to rediscover a principle which is at once basic and timeless.

Book Architecture in the Twentieth Century

Download or read book Architecture in the Twentieth Century written by Peter Go ssel and published by Taschen. This book was released on 2001 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After several pages of prologue summing up 18th century highlights--especially the rise in importance of geometry--some forty pages cover 1784-1916, focusing on the heavily fenestrated high-rises of the Chicago School and the iron and glass pavilions of Europe. The chapter spanning 1892-1925 concentrates on the many disputes over the trajectory of modernism: Nieuwe Kunst, Stile Liberty, Jugendstil, and Art Nouveau, all arguing the direction that the boom of prisons, hospitals, schools, town halls, and other institutional buildings would take. Three more time divisions follow and a concise compendium of architect biographies ends the volume. Along with an array of great pictures (par for Taschen), Gossel and Leuthauser--both active in the private sector--add a strong prose style attentive to debates among architects and the socioeconomic stage on which architects act. Book excerpt: The evolution of the close bond between the visual arts and opera starting from the nineteenth century up to the early twenty-first century. The intertwining of visual and musical arts at the beginning of the 20th century led to modernism, abstraction and in music, atonality. This meeting of the arts was never so intense as on the operatic stage. In her book Painting the Stage, curator and art and music critic Denise Wendel-Poray first examines historic productions beginning with Schinkel's iconic stage design for Mozart's Magic Flute, before exploring those of the 20th century with Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes and the implication of avant-garde artists in opera up until World War II. Directly after the armistice of 1945, famous artists such as André Derain, Balthus, Dalí, André Masson, and Kokoschka reopened the theaters amidst ruins, thus ushering in a new era of optimism. The event of pop art, happenings, and experimental theatre with the collaboration of artists Robert Indiana, David Hockney, Robert Wilson brought on further developments in the realm of opera. Finally, interviews with world famous artists such as Anselm Kiefer, William Kentridge, Bill Viola, Robert Longo, Jonathan Meese, and Daniel Richter show how their contribution to the genre is making opera today more than ever a form of "total art" or "Gesamtkunstwerk" and a hotbed of contemporary creation.

Book excerpt: The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art in Charlotte, North Carolina, opened its doors to the public in January 2010 and is one of the most inspired and inspiring spaces in the region. Designed by the eminent Swiss architect Mario Botta (born 1943), the museum's architecture displays a sculptural power that connects its appearance to the dynamic art it houses. In 2014, the museum pays homage to its designer with a monographic exhibition on this Swiss master architect, who is internationally renowned for his minimalist style and use of traditional materials such as brick and stone. Botta's buildings respect topographical conditions, regional factors and building materials. This richly illustrated catalogue is published on the occasion of this exhibition. From the diversity of Mario Botta's activity and realized work, it focuses on four key themes: libraries, museums, theaters and religious buildings. These themes express Botta's idea of "spaces of memory." The book also includes essays--including a chapter titled "Encounters" which presents a selection of works and artists that have influenced Botta's thoughts in fundamental ways, and to whom the architect feels indebted--plus a biography, a list of works, a list of personal and group exhibitions and a bibliography.
