Book excerpt: Fascinating and instantly recognizable, flatfishes are unique in their asymmetric postlarval body form. With over 800 extant species recognized and a distribution stretching around the globe, these fishes are of considerable research interest and provide a major contribution to commercial and recreational fisheries worldwide. This second edition of Flatfishes: Biology and Exploitation has been completely revised, updated and enlarged to respond to the ever-growing body of research. It provides: • Overviews of systematics, distribution, life history strategies, reproduction, recruitment, ecology and behaviour • Descriptions of the major fisheries and their management • An assessment of the synergies between ecological and aquaculture research of flatfishes. Carefully compiled and edited by four internationally-known scientists and with chapters written by many world leaders in the field, this excellent new edition of a very popular and successful book is essential reading for fish biologists, fisheries scientists, marine biologists, aquaculture personnel, ecologists, environmental scientists, and government workers in fisheries and fish and wildlife departments. Flatfishes: Biology and Exploitation, Second Edition, should be found in all libraries of research establishments and universities where life sciences, fish biology, fisheries, aquaculture, marine sciences, oceanography, ecology and environmental sciences are studied and taught. Reviews of the First Edition • A solid, up-to-date book that advanced students and research scientists with interests in fish biology will find interesting and useful. Aquaculture International • A data-rich book that outlines much of what you might ever want to know about flatfishes. Fish & Fisheries • Well presented with clear illustrations and a valuable source of information for those with a general interest in fish ecology or for the more specialist reader. You should make sure that your library has a copy. J Fish Biology • An excellent and very practical overview of the whole, global flatfish scene. Anyone interested in flatfish at whichever stage of the economic food chain should invest in a copy immediately. Book Early Stages of Atlantic Fishes

Download or read book Early Stages of Atlantic Fishes written by William J. Richards and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2005-08-08 with total page 1312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Early Life History (ELH) of marine fishes in Fishing Area 31, which includes the western central North Atlantic, Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico, has remained incomplete over the years. This certainly wasn't because of any lack of interest, but rather a lack of a comprehensive merging of studies that would provide a broad understandi

Book The New Fresh Seafood Buyer s Guide

Download or read book The New Fresh Seafood Buyer s Guide written by Ian Dore and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a completely new edition of Fresh Seafood-The Commer cial Buyer's Guide, which was first published in 1984. There have been many changes in both product and the seafood business in the intervening years. About 70 percent of the material in this book is new, a tribute to the rapid pace of change throughout the industry. The subject of this book is fresh seafood. "Fresh" is defined as product handled under refrigeration (mechanical or ice) from har vester to consumer. This excludes frozen product, canned product and other shelf-stable packaging. Frozen seafoods are covered in the companion volume, The New Frozen Seafood Handbook. Many prod ucts are, of course, handled in both refrigerated and frozen forms. There may be substantial differences, not just in how they are han dled, but in how they are processed, graded and packed. Frozen sea foods are often treated and traded as commodities, with standard descriptions. Marketing and distributing fresh fish and shellfish, which has to be eaten within days of harvest, is necessarily more personal and direct. The contest between refrigerated and frozen seafoods has continued for many years and shows no signs of resolving. Despite massive im provements in the quality of much frozen product, consumers and their retail and restaurant suppliers still tend to believe that "fresh" is bet ter, perhaps simply because the word "fresh" is naturally appealing.

Book The living marine resources of the Eastern Central Atlantic Volume 4 Bony fishes part 2 Perciformes

Download or read book The living marine resources of the Eastern Central Atlantic Volume 4 Bony fishes part 2 Perciformes written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2018-11-15 with total page 820 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This multivolume field guide covers the species of interest to fisheries of the major marine resource groups exploited in the Eastern Central Atlantic. The area of coverage includes FAO fishing area 34 and part of 47. The marine resource groups included are bivalves, gastropods, chitons, cephalopods, stomatopods, shrimps, lobsters, crabs, hagfishes, sharks, batoid fishes, chimaeras, bony fishes and sea turtles. The introductory chapter outlines the environmental, ecological, and biogeographical factors influencing the marine biota, and the basic components of the fisheries in the Eastern Central Atlantic. Within the field guide, the sections on the re source groups are arranged phylogenetically according to higher taxonomic levels such as class, order, and family. Each resource group is introduced by general re marks on the group, an illustrated section on technical terms and measurements, and a key or guide to orders or families. Each family generally has an account summarizing family diagnostic characters, bi o logical and fisheries in formation, notes on similar families occur ring in the area, a key to species, a check list of species, and a short list of relevant literature. Families that are less important to fisheries include an abbreviated family account and no de tailed species in formation. Species in the important families are treated in detail (arranged alphabetically by genus and species) and include the species name, frequent synonyms and names of similar specie s, an illustration, FAO common name(s), diagnostic characters, biology and fisheries in formation, notes on geo graphical distribution, and a distribution map. For less important species, abbreviated accounts are used. Generally, this includes the species name, FAO common name(s), an illustration, a distribution map, and notes on biology, fisheries, and distribution. Each volume concludes with its own index of scientific and common names.

Book Fish Diversity of Japan

    Book Details:
  • Author : Yoshiaki Kai
  • Publisher : Springer Nature
  • Release : 2022-01-21
  • ISBN : 9811674272
  • Pages : 447 pages

Download or read book Fish Diversity of Japan written by Yoshiaki Kai and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-21 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews and summarizes the studies on the fish diversity of Japan. It covers the present knowledge of ichthyofauna, habitat distribution, phylogeography, ecology, morphology, and conservation, as well as the history of ichthyology and fish collections in Japan. The book comprises five parts: I. Fish Diversity and Ichthyology of Japan, II. Habitat Distribution and Species Diversity, III. Diversity within Species: Phylogeographic Perspective on Japanese Fishes, IV. Morphological and Ecological Diversifications, and V. Conservation of Fish Diversity in Japan. The Japanese Archipelago is surrounded by two major warm and one cold currents. It is located in the western North Pacific and encompasses several climatic regimes from north to south. Although the land area of Japan is small, the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of Japan ranks as the sixth largest in the world, including several marginal seas (Sea of Okhotsk, Sea of Japan, and East China Sea), and deep trenches (Izu-Ogasawara, Japan, and Kurile Trenches). Owing to a variety of marine habitats and a complex geological history, Japan has a rich fish species diversity, representing over 4,500 species in 370 families. The richness of fish species diversity has attracted many scientists since the late 1700s, and continuous studies have led to the development of ichthyology in Japan. With chapters written by leading experts in the field, the book will provide a stimulating and reliable resource for future research and contribute to the progress of ichthyology of the world.
