Book excerpt: Excerpt from Both Sides of the Controversy Between the Roman and Reformed Churches; Being I: A Doctrinal Catechism, Etc This is the great question which has been debated in the Christian World for the last three hundred and fifty years, and which is here presented on both sides. On the one side, the Roman Church maintains that what was held by it and by those under its power in the Dark Ages, (and to this day, ) is the genuine and pure Christian religion. On the other side, all other churches, and chiefly those called Protestant, maintain that the Roman Church has much that is false and dangerous mixed with the faith once delivered to the saints, and that this false doctrine always has done harm, and always will, and therefore ought to be given up. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Concise View of the Principal Points of Controversy Between the Protestant and Roman Churches The two first and the third of the tracts here published, have* for some years past been frequently called for, and the author has been repeatedly solicited to allow a new edition of them. Motives of delicacy only, have prevented his compliance. He was unwilling to renew any uneasy feelings in the breast of the venerable writer of the Ad dress to the Roman Catholics in the United States of Ame rica, for whom, notwithstanding many illiberal insinua tions in this address, he never ceased to entertain sincere esteem and attachment. By the decease Of Archbishop Carroll, every disinclination and Obstacle to the republica tion of these tracts, is removed. They who may now enter the lists against them, will not be able to advance any thing unnoticed by him, and therefore no dread is entertained of their being refuted. If it should be said, that publications of this nature are only calculated to nourish the acrimonious spirit of controversy, which Christian charity should rather strive to suppress, let the reader turn to the Appendix to the Catholic Question, published at new-york in 1813, and candidly determine whether such a wanton attack upon the Protestant faith, did not call for more severe animad version than that which it received. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Protestant, Vol. 2: Essays on the Principal Points of Controversy Between the Church of Rome and the Reformed I long ago maintained, that the head of the Catholic or universal church, must be infallible, otherwise there would be no security against defection; but Bishop Ha seems not to be quite certain whether the pope be infallible or not, though he seems rather inclined to believe that he is. He puts a question, and gives an answer thus Q. When the head of the church emits any decree concerning faith or morals, to which he requires submission from all the faithful, is he himself infalli ble in what he there teaches? A. This is not proposed as an article of divine faith, nor has the church made any decision concerning it. Great numbers of the most learned divines are of Opinion, that in such a case the head of the church is infallible in what he teaches; but there are others of a contrary opinion, who think that his decree is not to be considered as infallibly certain, till the body of the bishops receive it, either by their express approbation, or by their tacit submission to it, by which it becomes a decree of the whole church, whose infallibility is undoubted.
