This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Botany for High Schools and Colleges This book is designed to serve as an Introduction to the Study of Plants. It does not profess to give a, complete account of the Vegetable Kingdom, but only such an outline as will best subserve the pur poses of the work. In its preparation there have been kept in view the wants of the large number, in the schools and out, who wish to obtain, as a branch of a liberal cul ture, a general knowledge of the structure of plants, with some idea as to their classification into the larger divisions and subdivisions of the Vegetable Kingdom. For this class of students and general readers, what is here given will in most cases be amply sufficient to enable any one to understand the greater part of the current biological literature, in so far as it relates to vegetable organisms. For the student who desires to pursue the subject further, or who intends to make botany a special study, this book aims to lead him to become himself an observer and investigator, and thus to obtain at first hand his knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of plants accordingly the presentation of the matter has been made such as to fit the book for constant use in the Laboratory, the text supplying the outline sketch, which may be filled up by each. Student, with the aid of the scalpel and compound microscope. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of Botany, for Secondary Schools 1. Occurrence of plants - Plants form the natural cover ing of the earth's surface. So generally is this true that a land surface without plants seems remarkable. Not only do plants cover the land, but they abound in waters as well, both fresh and salt waters. One of the most noticeable facts in regard to the occurrence of plants is that they do not form a monotonous covering for the earth's surface, but that there are forests in one place, meadows in another, swamp growths in another, etc. In this way the general appearance of vegetation is exceedingly varied, and each appearance tells of certain conditions of living. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Botany for High Schools Several chapters are devoted to a study of the peculiar and unusual forms of nutrition by certain plants that have become closely associated in this respect with other organisms, and by the fungi and bacteria, which, lacking chlorophyll, must obtain certain food by other means than that employed by the green plants. In this connection special attention is given to some of the more important micro-organisms which are beneficial to man because of certain products of their activity, or which are harmful as causal agents in disease. One chapter is devoted to the study of the more useful plants of the farm, orchard and garden or of those employed in industrial operations. Chapters are also devoted to the principles of plant develop ment and plant breeding, subjects which are of absorbing inter est to all and of special practical importance to the farmer and horticulturist. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual of High School Botany The present work is intended solely as a laboratory guide in connection with lectures or a text-book. The matter has, in consequence, been presented in the briefest and most compact form consistent with this purpose. The aim is to put the student to work quickly and to keep him at work intelligently. Ex planation has been added only when it seemed essen tial to the proper handling of the laboratory work. The material and the teacher have been regarded as the two important facts in the work. The laboratory directions, it is hoped, will bring the student into direct contact with the material, and will relieve the teacher of a large amount of drudgery, thus giving him time for real teaching. Book High School Bulletin No 1

Download or read book High School Bulletin No 1 written by Washington Washington and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from High School Bulletin No; 1: Botany The law of this state provides that the State Superintendent and the State Board of Education shall prepare courses of study for the schools of the state. Such courses of study were prepared at the meeting of the State Board of Education, held at Olympia in April, 1905. The law contemplates a uniform course of study for common schools and for high schools. As long as the text books used in the state were the same for all districts, the course of study in both common and high schools was really only an allotment of work, an assignment of a certain number of pages to be covered in a given time. Diversity of text books, in view of the requirement of a uniform course of study, materially changed the situation. The need of a unifying influence was felt at once. To meet this need a Manual for the Elementary Schools was issued in 1905. It has long been evident that a manual for High Schools was also needed. Any one at all familiar with educational conditions in Washington knows full well that there is greater variation in the quantity, quality and methods of work done in the high schools than in the common schools. So far there has been practically no supervision of high schools in this state. There has been some inspection, but very little supervision, and even this limited inspection has been confined to four-year high schools. There are two methods possible in the preparation of a high school manual. First, competent instructors in various lines of high school work can be secured to prepare material and suggestions in their special lines, and the entire series of papers issued as a high school manual. Second, a series of conferences of high school instructors can be arranged, one conference for each line of work; at these conferences, there can be a thorough discussion of questions pertaining to a particular branch, and the conclusions of the conference published as a bulletin by the state department. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Botany: An Introductory Text for Colleges and Advanced Classes in Secondary Schools The first step in developing the course was the arranging Of laboratory and field work. The second was the working out Of the classroom discussions SO that the class work and the actual work with the plant materials would run parallel and supple ment each other. The laboratory directions have been used and revised at intervals during the past five years, and the textbook has been tested and revised and used in mimeographed form for the past two years. During this period the work has been pre sented to upward Of three thousand students and the course has been improved in every detail through the experience and con structive criticisms Of the eight instructors who have tried out various methods and devices and different arrangements Of the material with their classes at The Ohio State University. Suggestions and ideas for guidance in the selection Of subject matter have been derived from four sources. The first of these is the traditional course in general botany. This embodies the facts and principles which most botanists agree are essential for a foundation in the subject, and these are to be retained unless there is definite reason why they Should be set aside. The second source from which suggestions as to subject matter have come is the large body Of men engaged in the teaching or practice Of horticulture, agriculture, and forestry. These workers in the applied fields Of botany are the men who more than any others use information concerning plants, and certainly a course in general botany Should afford a foundation for their courses and their practice. A third source Of suggestions and criticism is the students to whom the course has been given. The questions they have asked. Download or read book Introduction to Botany Classic Reprint written by William Chase Stevens and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to Botany Enough work has been outlined in this book for a year's course in those schools that are prepared, by suitable time allotted to the subject and by laboratory equipment, to do comprehensive and thorough work. A term could be devoted to the work outlined in Chapters I to X inclusive; and where the daily laboratory periods are one hour or less, the entire school year could be profitably occupied by the course there outlined. It is, of course, presumed that the teacher will select from the book such work as the possibilities of his school warrant. It is not expected that each student will perform all of the physiological experiments herein outlined; but different experiments are to be assigned to individuals or groups of students, the results to be used for purpose of demonstration before the entire class. Much stress is laid on laboratory work, which is to be done with the utmost possible care and accuracy, not only that the student may respect his work and that the knowledge gained may be exact, but also that the fine opportunity which the study of plants so richly affords for training in seeing and interpreting facts, may not be passed by. Download or read book High School Botanical Note Book written by H. B. Spotton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from High School Botanical Note Book: For the Junior and Senior Leaving Examinations The following suggestions are otlered in the hope that they may be found helpful to those who beginning the work of teaching Botany, as well as to the young student. The writer, mindful of the difficulties and perplexities which he has himself often had to encounter, makes no apology for thus presenting what appear to him to he the chief essentials to success in this department of school work. It goes without saying that no written instructions can ever make a successful teacher where natural enthusiasm is wanting, but it is equally true that the young enthusiast may derive some benefit from the larger experience of others; and while the intelligent and active teacher will not slavishly follow the details of any method, but will be quick to avail himself of any legitimate device which will serve his purpose, still there are broad principles upon which those who have haul practical experience will probably agree. In the following remarks an attempt is made to outline the course of a vear's work, which it is thought will be found practicable in any High School. When to begin Botanical Wol'k. - A good deal might be saitl in favor of beginning: our botanical Work in the spring. At that time, when nature is awaiting from the torpor of winter. And the first leaves and flowers are unfolding it is especially delightful to ramble abroad. Then. Perhaps more than at any other time, the youthful mind is attracted by the forms of the vegetable world. And is prepared to enter upon the systematic studv of them with more than ordinary enthusiasm. And if it were possible to continue through the summer the botanical work begun in the spring, doubtless the most satisfactory results would be obtained. There is, however, the break caused by the long Vacation during which teacher and pupils are separated and school work generally abandoned so that when classes are resumed in September the work of the spring has to be gone over again, with the disadvan tage of having, in most cases, new pupils as well as old ones to deal with. Ou the whole, therefore; as the school year begins in September, and a general re-organization of classes then takes place, it seems most advantageous to begin the botanical work at that time. During September and October an abundant supply of material is available. With the advantage also of access to fruits and seeds at all kinds, as well as flowers. It is exceedingly desirable that during this period, when fresh plants can be had for examination, the botanical lessons should be frequent. If a short lesson could be given every day at this time surprising progress would be made in a few weeks. Summer has passed by, and work has to be confined to such material as has been collected for winter use, the lessons need non be given so often probably twice a week would he found quite sntlicient. Then, in the spring. When field work can be resumed, the lessons may again be increased in frequency for a time.
