Book Botany for High Schools

  • Author : George Francis Atkinson
  • Publisher : Forgotten Books
  • Release : 2015-06-02

  • Pages : 568 pages

Download or read book Botany for High Schools written by George Francis Atkinson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Botany for High Schools This book is addressed to pupils in their first or second year in the high school. It assumes that Botany may be the first science they study, and that therefore it should provide plenty of individual work within their powers, and should give this work unity of effect and make it evidently worth while. In keeping with the modern scientific spirit, nutrition, reproduction, and relation to man are made the dominant aspects of the subject. What plants are is made to appear in terms of what they do. Structures and processes are then interpreted both from the plant's point of view and from man's. The problems set before the pupil call for definite and continued effort on his part, and for the independent interpretation of observations. The economic relations of plant life are noted as the study proceeds, and the concluding chapters are intended to leave the pupil with a general view of the larger general applications of the science. Especial importance is given to the study of seeds and seedlings, the parts of the full-grown plant and the principal types or forms of the root, stem and leaf, including the work performed by these parts in providing food and water, building material, and food storage. Since the flower is an important structure designed for the purpose of facilitating seed production, with principal and subordinate organs for this work, especial interest is attached to a careful study of its parts and their structure. As the different kinds of flowers and the different modes of their association on the flower shoot are the result of the operation of natural laws, floral structures and groupings naturally indicate plant relationship. Book Lessons in Elementary Botany for Secondary Schools

Download or read book Lessons in Elementary Botany for Secondary Schools written by Thomas H. Macbride and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lessons in Elementary Botany for Secondary Schools There are in general two ways in which the study of Botany may be approached. The first begins with the study of simpler plants, and proceeds systematically to the more complex. The second attempts, first, more familiar forms in their more striking phases, leaving more recondite problems for later inquiry and investigation. Of the two methods, the former has the advantage of being more logical; the latter is certainly more natural, and, in fact, corresponds with the manner in which all science has been developed. In the present volume the second method has been followed. This for several reasons. In the first place, it seems more convenient. The very months when the simpler phases of plant-life are at their best are, by the present arrangement of our school year, practically excluded. But the phenomena presented by the higher plants are at least equally worthy of investigation, and are, as a rule, nearly always accessible. Again, the study of the lower forms of plant-life cannot be carried far without the aid of more or less costly laboratories and appliances; and if the method adopted necessitates the study of such forms, the study of Botany will be restricted to such schools as can afford the requisite apparatus.
