Book Outlines of the History of Botany Classic Reprint

Download or read book Outlines of the History of Botany Classic Reprint written by R. J. Harvey-Gibson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of the History of Botany The following brief sketch of the history of botany makes no claim to originality save in the mode of presentation of the subject-matter. It comprises the substance of a course Of lectures given to students Of the University of Liverpool during their third year Of residence, and has for its object the discussion of the more important features in the advance of botanical knowledge from the earliest times down to, approximately, the present day. The ordinary university student, in the course of an already overcrowded curriculum, has only the minimum of time to devote to the study of the history of the science, and not always the knowledge or experience requisite to form a proper estimate of the relative values of the results achieved by the numberless investigators whose names appear on the pages of the larger text-books, still less to picture for himself in correct perspective, the evolution of the science as a whole. These lectures, it is hoped, may in some measure aid him in attaining these ends, so far as the history of botany is concerned. Much has been omitted that another writer might have included exigencies of time and space must serve as excuse for such omissions. Some aspects Of the subject have been expanded, not unduly it is hoped, that others might prefer to treat more briefly or to omit altogether. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Botany IN writing this little introduction to the study of a plant I have endeavoured especially to present it to the reader as a living organism. Botany is now regarded as a branch of biology, and is not satisfactorily studied by gathering plants and, after ascertaining their names and the natural orders to which they belong, drying them and putting them away in a cabinet. I have tried to present them as they are engaged in the struggle for existence, and to call my readers' attention not only to their form and structure but especially to what they do in life, and why and how they do it. I hope that those who study them by the assistance of this little primer will try to have the living plant under observation while' they read it. I have not written any detailed scheme of. Laboratory work, but I hope my readers will be able to construct such a scheme for themselves as they follow the directions for study given in the text. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Students' Text-Book of Botany When, some few years ago, it became necessary to revise the English Edition of the late Prof. Prantl's Lehrbuch der Botanik, it appeared to me that the requirements of English students would be more satisfactorily met if the scope of the work were so extended that, whilst retaining all that has made it of value to beginners, it might be more useful to those engaged in the advanced study of the science. With this object in view, the number of pages has been doubled by additions to all four parts of the book, but more especially to Part III. Dealing with the Classification of Plants. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary d104-Book of Agricultural Botany My aim in these few pages has been to lay a foundation which may serve to guide the future operations in the Field, and form a basis for intelligent trial and experiment. In these days of competition and struggle for existence every little tells, and the farmer who, understanding, can apply his knowledge, is more likely to succeed, than one who labours without the advantage of this knowledge. It has been my endeavour to use as few technical terms as possible. Botany is often considered a science of names. Download or read book An Introduction to Botany Classic Reprint written by John Lindley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-23 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Botany Two hundred and ninety years have now elapsed since one of the earliest introductions to Botany upon record was published, in four pages folio, by Leonhart Fuchs, a learned physician of Tubingen. At that period Botany was nothing more than the art of' distinguishing one plant from another, and of' remembering the medical. Qualities, sometimes real, but more frequently imaginary, which experience, or error, or superstition, had ascribed to them. Little was known of Vegetable Physiology, nothing of Vege table Anatomy, and even the art of arranging species' systematically had still to be discovered; While scarcely a trace existed of those modern views which have raised the science from the mere business of the herb-gatherer to a station among the most intel lectual branches of natural philosophy. Book Introduction to Botany Classic Reprint

Download or read book Introduction to Botany Classic Reprint written by William Chase Stevens and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to Botany Enough work has been outlined in this book for a year's course in those schools that are prepared, by suitable time allotted to the subject and by laboratory equipment, to do comprehensive and thorough work. A term could be devoted to the work outlined in Chapters I to X inclusive; and where the daily laboratory periods are one hour or less, the entire school year could be profitably occupied by the course there outlined. It is, of course, presumed that the teacher will select from the book such work as the possibilities of his school warrant. It is not expected that each student will perform all of the physiological experiments herein outlined; but different experiments are to be assigned to individuals or groups of students, the results to be used for purpose of demonstration before the entire class. Much stress is laid on laboratory work, which is to be done with the utmost possible care and accuracy, not only that the student may respect his work and that the knowledge gained may be exact, but also that the fine opportunity which the study of plants so richly affords for training in seeing and interpreting facts, may not be passed by. Download or read book A Text Book of Botany Classic Reprint written by EDUARD. STRASBURGER and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of Botany IT is customary to place all living beings in either the animal 01 vegetable kingdoms, but in reality a sharp boundary line between animals and plants first becomes possible when they exhibit a complicated structure. In those of more simple organisation all distinctions disappear, and it becomes difficult to define the exact limits of Botany and Zoology. This, in fact, could scarcely be otherwise, as all the processes of life, in both the animal and vegetable kingdoms, are dependent On the same substance, protoplasm. With more complicated organisation, the specific differences increase, and the characteristics distinguishing animal from vegetable life become more obvious. For the present, it must be confessed, the recognition Of an organism, as an animal or a plant, is dependent upon its corre spondence with an abstract idea of what a plant or animal Should be, .based on certain points of agreement between the members of each class. A satisfactory basis for the Separation of all living organisms into the categories of animals or plants can only be obtained when it is shown that all organisms distinguished as animals are in reality genetically connected, and that a similar connection exists between all plants. The proof of this can only be arrived at through the theory OF evolution. From the study of the fossil remains and impressions Of animals and plants, it has been established that in former epochs forms Of life. Differing from those of the present age existed on the earth. It is also generally assumed that all living animals and plants have been derived by gradual modification from previously existing forms. This leads to the further conclusion that those organisms possess ing closely Similar structure, which are united as species in a genus, are in reality related to one another. It is also probable that the union of corresponding genera into one familv and of families into higher groups serves to give expression to a real relationship existing between them. Download or read book Beginners Botany Classic Reprint written by L. H. Bailey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-11 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beginners Botany The value of biology study lies in the work with the actual objects. It is not possible to provide specimens for every point in the work, nor is it always desirable to do so; for the beginning pupil may not be able to interest himself in the objects, and he may become immersed in details before he has arrived at any general view or reason of the subject. Great care must be exercised that the pupil is not swamped. Mere book work or memory stuffing is useless, and it may dwarf or divert the sympathies of active young minds. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Botany The material in the book, which is sufficient for a year's course, is so arranged that it can be adjusted to a half-year course when local needs make this desirable. When seasons are favorable it is thought best to follow the order of chapters as given, but seasonal conditions are so diverse in different parts of the country that the teacher is urged to rearrange chapters whenever necessary for adequate illustration of such topics as flowers, seeds, and weeds: If this is done, Chapters I and II may be studied briefly, and then followed by chapters dealing with special topics.
