Book Brewing Sustainability in the Coffee and Tea Industries

Download or read book Brewing Sustainability in the Coffee and Tea Industries written by Alissa Bilfield and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-04-24 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the often intertwined industries of coffee and tea, using accounts of single producer communities to highlight the transformation from plantation-style colonial agriculture towards systems that now claim to produce social and environmental benefits from the farm to the cup. Focusing on the dynamics of farmers' experiences producing coffee and tea ethically and sustainably at origin, the book shows how these values are transmitted and reinforced throughout the value chain. Exploring tandem case studies of fair trade cooperatives in Guatemala and Sri Lanka, it provides an insight into the creation of more sustainable value chains from producer to consumer in the global marketplace, incorporating the perspectives of coffee exporters, importers, roasters, and café owners. This book is focused on the prospects of the specialty movement in food as a catalyst for forging more authentic, just, and sustainable supply chains that consider both people and the environment. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of food and agriculture, sustainable food systems and supply chains, the fair trade movement, sustainable development, and social entrepreneurship and social innovation.

Book Object Studies

Download or read book Object Studies written by Cyrus Mulready and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-03-06 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Object Studies: Introductions to Material Culture is a textbook that introduces students to an interdisciplinary approach to material cultural study. This text helps reveal how everyday objects from pens and coffee cups to our most cherished keepsakes help define our collective histories and personal narratives. Object Studies is organized around accessible and engaging chapters on objects with “model essays” that present original projects designed to engage students with a series of concepts and research activities. Each will demonstrate a key methodology tied to specific learning outcomes, but all chapters will be intertwined in their attention to the project of developing the core skills of “object studies”: careful viewing, writing detailed descriptions, setting out and testing research hypotheses, and telling stories through material artifacts. Aimed towards undergraduate students taking courses in material culture as well as postgraduate students embarking on independent research projects these chapter “studies” are practically oriented and demonstrate research projects that can be undertaken either in a course or even through personal study. Chapters in Object Studies conclude with research questions, suggestions on methodology, and a discursive bibliography designed to help students pursue their own projects based on these examples.

Book Biofuel Energy Spent Coffee Grounds Biodiesel Bioethanol and Solid Fuel

Download or read book Biofuel Energy Spent Coffee Grounds Biodiesel Bioethanol and Solid Fuel written by Mebrahtu Haile and published by Anchor Academic Publishing (aap_verlag). This book was released on 2014-08 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, the use of waste coffee grounds for biodiesel producution, its solid by-product after oil extraction for bioethanol generation, and the second by-product after bioethanol generation for solid fuel generation is explored. For the study, waste coffee grounds samples were gathered from TOMOCA PLC, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The oil was then concentrated utilizing n-hexane and brought about an oil yield of 19.73 %w/w. The biodiesel was acquired by a two-stage process, i.e. acid catalyzed esterification followed by base catalyzed transesterification utilizing catalysts sulfuric acid and sodium hydroxide respectively. The change, after esterification of waste coffee grounds oil into biodiesel, was about 80.4%w/w. Different parameters that are fundamental for biodiesel quality were assessed utilizing the American Standard for Testing Material (ASTM D 6751- 09) and revealed that all quality parameters are inside the extent pointed out aside from acid value. Also, the strong waste staying after oil extraction was researched for conceivable use as a feedstock for the generation of bioethanol and brought about a bioethanol yield of 8.3 %v/v. Moreover, the solid waste staying after bioethanol generation was assessed for solid fuel (20.8 MJ/Kg) applications.
