I observed at breakfast that although it was a part of his abstemious discipline on this most solemn fast to take no milk in his tea, yet when Mrs. Desmoulins inadvertently poured it in, he did not reject it. I talked of the strange indecision of mind, and imbecility in the common occurrences of life, which we may observe in some people. Johnson: 'Why, sir, I am in the habit of getting others to do things for me.' Boswell: 'What, sir, have you that, weakness?' Johnson: 'Yes, sir. But I always think afterwards I should have done better for myself.' I told him that at a gentleman's house where there was thought to be such extravagance or bad management, that he was living much beyond his income, his lady had objected to the cutting of a pickled mango, and that I had taken an opportunity to ask the price of it, and found that it was only two shillings; so here was a very poor saving. Johnson: 'Sir, that is the blundering economy of a narrow understanding. It is stopping one hole in a sieve.' But I am convinced that it is in vain to expect from you a private correspondence with any regularity. I must, therefore, look upon you as a fountain of wisdom, from whence few rills are communicated to a distance, and which must be approached at its source to partake fully of its virtues. 'I am coming to London soon, and am to appear in an appeal from the Court of Session in the House of Lords. A schoolmaster in Scotland was, by a court of inferior jurisdiction, deprived of his office, for being somewhat severe in the chastisement of his scholars. The Court of Session considering it to be dangerous to the interest of learning and education to lessen the dignity of teachers, and make them afraid of too indulgent parents, instigated by the complaints of their children, restored him. His enemies have appealed to the House of Lords, though the salary is only twenty pounds a year. I was Counsel for him here. I hope there will be little fear of a reversal; but I must beg to have your aid in my plan of supporting the decree. It is a general question, and not a point of particular law. 'Dear Sir, - That you are coming so soon to town I am very glad; and still more glad that you are coming as an advocate. I think nothing more likely to make your life pass happily away than the consciousness of your own value, which eminence in your profession will certainly confer. Boswell's book is very long (it contains more than half a million words); large parts of it assume familiarity with Latin; and the beginning of the book is much less attractive than the rest. The present editor, who attacked it at a tender age, was deterred partly by the perplexing mass of Croker's notes, partly also by the long quotations and lists of conjectural attributions; and after wander ing for a space in those crepuscular regions, forsook the journey before the sun was up. If any apology is required for making a selection from a work in its nature discontinuous, the authority may be cited of Johnson himself; who was at first angry with Bishop Hurd for publishing a mutilated Cowley, but afterwards relenting allowed that 'there is no impropriety in a man's publishing as much as he chooses of any authour, if he does not put the rest out of the way'. Book excerpt: We went and viewed the museum of Mr. Richard Green, apothecary here, who told me he was proud of being a relation of Dr. Johnson's. It was, truely, a wonderful collection, both of antiquities and natural curiosities, and ingenious works of art. He had all the articles accurately arranged, with their names upon labels, printed at his own little press; and on the staircase leading to it was a board, with the names of contributors marked in gold letters. A printed catalogue of the collection was to be had at a bookseller's. Johnson expressed his admiration of the activity and diligence and good fortune of Mr. Green, in getting together, in his situation, so great a variety of things; and Mr. Green told me that Johnson once said to him, 'Sir, I should as soon have thought of building a man of war, as of collecting such a museum.' Mr. Green's obliging alacrity in shewing it was very pleasing.
