The influenza pandemic that’s sweeping the world has claimed his father’s life; his voice has changed, so he can’t sing in the Boston Boys’ Choir anymore; and now money is tight, so he must quit school to get a job. It’s not fair! Joshua begins working as a newspaper boy, hawking papers on the street, but he soon finds himself competing with Charlestown Charlie, a tough, streetwise boy who does not make things easier for Joshua. It seems that fitting in is not as easy as it once was. Then disaster strikes the city of Boston. Joshua must do what he can to help, and in doing so he finds the place—and the voice—that he thought he’d lost. This remarkable novel is fast-paced, suspenseful, and based on true incidents in Boston history.

Book The Forgotten Songs of the Newfoundland Outports

Download or read book The Forgotten Songs of the Newfoundland Outports written by Anna Kearney Guigné and published by University of Ottawa Press. This book was released on 2016-12-12 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1951, musician Kenneth Peacock (1922–2000) secured a contract from the National Museum of Canada (today the Canadian Museum of History) to collect folksongs in Newfoundland. As the province had recently joined Confederation, the project was deemed a goodwill gesture, while at the same time adding to the Museum’s meager Anglophone archival collections. Between 1951 and 1961, over the course of six field visits, Peacock collected 766 songs and melodies from 118 singers in 38 communities, later publishing two-thirds of this material in a three-volume collection, Songs of the Newfoundland Outports (1965). As the publication consists of over 1000 pages, Outports is considered to be a bible for Newfoundland singers and a valuable resource for researchers. However, Peacock’s treatment of the material by way of tune-text collations, use of lines and stanzas from unpublished songs has always been somewhat controversial. Additionally, comparison of the field collection with Outports indicates that although Peacock acquired a range of material, his personal preferences requently guided his publishing agenda. To ensure that the songs closely correspond to what the singers presented to Peacock, the collection has been prepared by drawing on Peacock’s original music and textual notes and his original field recordings. The collection is far-ranging and eclectic in that it includes British and American broadsides, musical hall and vaudeville material alongside country and western songs, and local compositions. It also highlights the influence of popular media on the Newfoundland song tradition and contextualizes a number of locally composed songs. In this sense, it provides a key link between what Peacock actually recorded and the material he eventually published. As several of the songs have not previously appeared in the standard Newfoundland collections, The Forgotten Songs sheds new light on the extent of Peacock’s collecting. The collection includes 125 songs arranged under 113 titles along with extensive notes on the songs, and brief biographies of the 58 singers. Thanks to the Research Centre for the Study of Music Media and Place, a video of the launch event, held in St.John's, Newfoundland, is available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghj6E6-QiLI&t=21s.

Book Sweet Songs for Gentle Americans

Download or read book Sweet Songs for Gentle Americans written by Nicholas E. Tawa and published by Popular Press. This book was released on 1980 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular parlor songs were the main form of secular musical entertainment in the early years of the United States. They were heard regularly in the homes of our principal statesmen, authors, intellectuals, professionals, and businessmen. Laborers and slaves also sang them. They were the principal fare of concert and stage performances, and were freely interpolated into Italian operas, Shakespearean plays, lyceum lectures, and church services. In short, parlor songs played a dominant role in American cultural history. This was the music that Jefferson, Lincoln, Longfellow, Whitman, and Emily Dickinson enjoyed. Yet, whether owing to prejudice or misinformation, we still know little about the songs they listened to and sang: why and for whom written; when heard; or how performed. This book attempts to contribute that knowledge. Contemporary diaries, biographies, fiction, newspapers, periodicals, and books on music were studied and the music itself exhaustively analyzed in order to reach accurate conclusions about the popular culture that emerged between the American Revolution and the Civil War. The reader comes away with a sympathetic understanding of the human hopes, fears, and joys embodied in the songs, and with a curiosity about the countless melodic gems awaiting exploration.

Book The Bird s Song

    Book Details:
  • Author : Timothy M. Burke
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2013-10
  • ISBN : 9780615850764
  • Pages : 274 pages

Download or read book The Bird s Song written by Timothy M. Burke and published by . This book was released on 2013-10 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Former prosecutor Timothy Burke recounts the separate tragedies that entwine three very different women in his true-crime drama The Bird's Song. Taking place amid the racially tense backdrop of 1980s Boston, these tragic cases weave together to form a tale of lost justice, faith, love, and redemption. Three women come together after each experiencing unspeakable horror: the rape victim whose rapist has eluded capture, the widow whose husband was brutally murdered by a drug dealer who is later acquitted, and the mother whose young son dies inexplicably at a Boston hospital. All three are forced to adjust to a radically new life, each one relying on Burke as their lawyer and case advocate in order to bring them some measure of justice. As these women's stories slowly unfold, however, it becomes clear to the reader that it is Burke himself whose life is forever changed. With the author's assured hand and detailed prose, each woman's tumultuous journey from unbearable loss to the tentative reemergence of faith in both their lives and in the justice system comes to life. Centered on the story of Ruth, an African American single mother, The Bird's Song chronicles not only these women's strength, but also Burke's own struggle to find humanity within a violent and often inscrutable world. Alternately dark and uplifting, Burke's latest drama is a carefully crafted tale that unflinchingly reveals the cruel and brutal nature of violent crimes in one of the United States' most celebrated cities. As the author struggles with his faith in God amid the horrific crimes he handles on a daily basis, Burke learns from those who have been wounded the most that nothing in life is random and that faith, love, and justice can ultimately prevail. As he did in his previous book, The Paradiso Files: Boston's Unknown Serial Killer, Burke masterfully blends high tension courtroom drama with the perseverance of the human spirit. The Bird's Song is a provocative glimpse into the emotional ravages that violence and loss leave behind. "There was a soft murmur of anticipation within the crowded courtroom as the spectators watched the solitary figure seated at the prosecution table. Surrounded by scores of people, he was never more alone. In many ways his life reflected the loneliness he felt at that very moment. He welcomed the finality of the case that had changed his life. Strangely, in that moment Burke thought of the mother blackbird from the dreams of his past and at the same time, the sheets on the children's beds. Brightly colored, they were Mickey Mouse prints with the happy Disney character welcoming the sleepy children into his open arms. The happy mouse with the four-fingered, white-gloved hands smiled at him, waving blindly from within the photographs taken of the children's blood-soaked beds."
