Book excerpt: Picturesque T Wharf was long the home of Boston's fishing industry. Henry D. Fisher created a remarkable photographic record of the fishing fleet in Boston Harbor between 1908 and 1920, when Boston was America's largest fish market. This book's 117 photographs, accompanied by an equally vivid text, recreate the fishing vessels and markets of a vanished era. The North American Society for Oceanic History named Down on T Wharf the best book on American maritime history published in 1982.

Book Catch documentation schemes for deep sea fisheries in the ABNJ Their value and options for implementation

Download or read book Catch documentation schemes for deep sea fisheries in the ABNJ Their value and options for implementation written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2019-04-15 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper discusses the potential value of catch documentation schemes (CDS) in deep-sea fisheries, and the implementation aspects that have to be taken into account to ensure the effectiveness of this trade-based tool to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. The paper argues that the schemes are indeed useful for addressing IUU fishing practices known to occur in deep-sea fisheries, and that their adoption would improve compliance with fisheries management requirements. Key infringements that could be directly detected and addressed include - but are not limited to - violations of closed areas harbouring protected vulnerable marine ecosystems in the deep ocean, and quota overfishing. The paper also establishes the notion that partial coverage of given species through a CDS at the level of regional fisheries management organizations is incongruous. Given that most deep-sea fisheries species have broad distributions that straddle many regional organizations, the most suitable implementation model appears to be a centrally operated electronic CDS platform - called a super-CDS - shared by a plurality of institutional and state players.

Book excerpt: Lucidly explaining the legal principles of Admiralty Law in a modern context, this new edition has been fully revised and updated to include recent case law and legislation, including extensive treatment of developments within the EC. Examining the law within a commercial perspective with suggestions for how legal risks should be managed, this is the ideal text for postgraduates studying admiralty or shipping law as well as professionals within the shipping industry. The intricate rules of the Brussels/Lugano Conventions are explained alongside conflict of jurisdictions, and the application of the forum non-conveniens, doctrine and forum shopping. Breach of jurisdiction agreements and remedies are also discussed and the vexed issues of anti-suit injunctions are dealt with comprehensively. Modern Admiralty Law analyses the corporate structures of ship owning companies and the circumstances in which the corporate veil may be pierced; suggestions for legitimate corporate structures for the purpose of risk management are also put forward. The consequences of non-compliance with the ISM Code are considered (such as potential criminal liability, the effect of non-compliance upon insurance contracts and limitation of liability), alongside an update of further measures being taken by the EC and the IMO on safety of ships and cleaner seas. An ideal reference tool, the new edition of this popular and comprehensive text includes summaries of the principles and case law and encourages further investigation. The practical and commercial orientation of this book will be of great benefit to readers studying the subject as an academic discipline as well as those who work in the area. From admiralty jurisdiction to limitation of liability, all aspects of admiralty law are thoroughly investigated, with recent developments providing new insights for this modern approach to admiralty law. This new edition is essential reading for postgraduates, practitioners, ship owners and managers, and a wide range of professionals within the shipping industry.

Book Beyond Trawlertown

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jo Byrne
  • Publisher : Liverpool University Press
  • Release : 2021-12-14
  • ISBN : 1800855613
  • Pages : 272 pages

Download or read book Beyond Trawlertown written by Jo Byrne and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2021-12-14 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond Trawlertown takes a journey through the British distant-water fishery and its port-city connections in an era of disruption. In 1976, defeat in the Anglo-Icelandic Cod Wars saw the British trawling fleet excluded from their traditional hunting grounds. Combining with wider global factors, the move brought an end to long-established trawling practices, with profound social, economic and cultural repercussions. Through a case study of the port of Hull, oral history and archival research explore the challenges, responses and legacy of rapid change. Although the emphasis is on Hull, this is far from a local history. Hull’s position among the world leading distant-water pioneers gives the story international significance. Focusing on memory, lived experience and place, the book goes beyond established narratives. Personal acts of remembering offer cultural perspectives on how global events and marine policy impact upon the seafaring communities that live with the consequences. The Cod Wars signaled an end, yet amid the disruption there were also new beginnings. And in the wake of an active fishery, the rhythms of the past continue to resonate in the negotiation of fishing heritage within the contemporary city. Through the convergence of time, place and memory, this holistic narrative of interweaving stories reveals the intricacies of our human interaction with the marine environment and the aftermath when its threads are broken.
