Book Boston and Its Story 1630 1915 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Boston and Its Story 1630 1915 Classic Reprint written by Edward Mussey Hartwell and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Boston and Its Story, 1630-1915 Boston has been an important place for more than two hundred and fifty years. Its history is intimately bound up with that of Massachusetts, of which it is the capital, and of New England, of which it has long been the metropolis. It has suffered many vicissitudes and undergone striking transformations in respect to territory and topography, as well as the form of its government, but from the beginning it has been a seed-plot and nursery of advanced political and social ideas and experiments. The purpose of these pages is twofold: (1) to furnish a clue to the history of Boston as an individual community that, owing to the force of circumstances and the spirit of its people, has played a conspicuous and influential part in the larger development of Massachusetts, of New England and of the nation; and (2) to indicate the nature of the events that gave historical significance to memorable sites and objects that have survived the ravages of time and still excite interest and veneration. So it is not a history that we present to our readers, but rather a relation or narrative concerning the development of "a poor country village" into a great city of vast and varied interests and of commanding rank. It is not our purpose to attempt to recount with fulness of detail all or even most of the deeds of which Bostonians are proud, or to pass judgment upon men or measures involved in controversial questions as to morals or politics that once seemed of vital moment and are still capable of arousing warm discussion. Such matters are better left to technical historians and partisan pamphleteers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Curiosities of History: Boston September Seventeenth, 1630-1880 It seems proper to say in offering this little volume to the public, that no attempt has been made to exhaust the subjects of which the papers respectively treat; but rather to enlarge upon matters of historical interest to Boston, which have been referred to only in a general way by historians and previous writers. - This idea rather than any determination to select merely curious topics, has in a large measure influenced the writer; and the endeavor has been to treat them freely and fairly, and present what may be new, or comparatively new, concerning them, from such sources as are now accessible and have been open to the writer. It is not, however, intended to say that an impulse towards some curious matters of history has not been indulged, and, indeed, considering the subjects and materials which presented themselves, could scarcely have been avoided, which was by no means desirable. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Boston and Her Story The purpose of this book is to tell the story of Boston in a simple and interesting way, which will appeal especially to pupils of the early grammar school age. It does not pretend to give all the details of historical occurrences nor of modern things of interest, but aims to present the most important facts in a way that they can be understood easily, and with a thread of interest that will increase the probability of their retention. The story is divided into four parts: the Settlement of Boston, including the Physical Features of Original Boston; the Boston of Early Colonial Days; the Boston of Revolutionary Days; the Boston of To-day. In each part the story is told by the use of fictitious characters, who are made to take part in genuine events, accurately described. The localities described in the fourth part are not held to be the only places of interest nor even those most worthy of atten tion, but an attempt has been made to present material from which one or two facts about each section of Boston may be learned, with the view of Obtaining a clearer conception of the extent and attractiveness of the city. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Boston: A Study of Independency The Story of Boston deals with the doings of a community of earnest men who for eightscore years had no considerable interests except those connected with politics and religion. For the whole of the earlier period of their history they gave themselves with all the force of their nature to such subjects as these. The pursuits which in our day absorb the attention of intelligent men are peculiar to our age and generation; the Fathers of New England knew them not. Governor Hutchinson was right when he wrote, in 1773: "For many years past the town of Boston has been used to interest itself in every affair of moment which concerned the Province in general"; for certainly Boston sought to do all that it could to give form to the action of the colonists in other parts of Massachusetts and of America. The story of Boston cannot be told, therefore, without reference to events that were going on in other parts of the land. Her great citizen, Samuel Adams, was the "Father of the American Revolution." This happened in August, 1630. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Frank Vining Smith

Download or read book Frank Vining Smith written by James A. Craig and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Frank Vining Smith (1879-1967), the nineteenth-century clipper ship, like the cathedral of the Middle Ages, was one of men's most glorious accomplishments. As Monet had done with the cathedral, Smith painted the ship, featuring it in different angles and at different times of the day. Having studied under the supervision of Frank W. Benson, and Edmund Tarbell at the Museum School in Boston, Smith brought a new approach to the conservative art of marine painting. When looking at a painting by Smith, one does not see the blueprint of detail that was common in ship painting at the turn of the century, instead one sees masses of shadows and the suggestion of details. Up close, it is difficult to see where one brush-stroke ends and another begins, but seen from a distance, his compositions work perfectly, and is what contributor Peter Williams calls "the alchemy of Smith's impressionism". AUTHOR: James A. Craig is a curator and lecturer specializing in nineteenth-century American marine art. SELLING POINTS: *Definitive exploration of the art and life of this prolific Massachusetts artist's 70 year career *Of interest to museums, universities, yacht clubs, yachting enthusiasts, and antique collectors *Vining Smith's work is in collections across the United States including in navy wardrooms, and he counted former President Franklin Delano Roosevelt as one of his loyal patrons ILLUSTRATIONS: 93 colour & 72 b/w

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To discover how women constructed their own mythology of the West, Kolodny examines the evidence of three generations of women's writing about the frontier. She finds that, although the American frontiersman imagined the wilderness as virgin land, an unspoiled Eve to be taken, the pioneer woman at his side dreamed more modestly of a garden to be cultivated. Both intellectual and cultural history, this volume continues Kolodny's study of frontier mythology begun in The Lay of the Land.
