Book An Investigation of the History Evolution and Organization of the Artisans Group in Boruca Costa Rica

Download or read book An Investigation of the History Evolution and Organization of the Artisans Group in Boruca Costa Rica written by Amy Catherine Clarke and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work documents the history, evolution and organization of the artisans' group in the indigenous town of Boruca, Costa Rica. The information was gathered through a series of interviews with various weavers, a short questionaire, and a census used to determine the population and percentage of artisans in the town. Through this study I found that the artisans' group does not achieve its goal of providing a significant market for the members. However, I came to the conclusion that the group does provide an important 'front' that enables the members to receive the outside aid that they need to continue producing and selling their artwork which they would not receive if they continued working individually. I also came to the conclusion that the artisans' group is at a turning point and their actions in the next couple of months will determine their continued existence as a group as they struggle with integration into the market system which means learning how to deal with situations that are outside of their cultural upbringing.

Book A Lifetime in Gal pagos

Download or read book A Lifetime in Gal pagos written by Tui De Roy and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-07-21 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A beautifully illustrated and deeply personal chronicle of De Roy's lifelong connection with these spectacular islands Tui De Roy was a year old in 1955 when her family left Europe, boarding a banana boat bound for the Pacific to lead a different sort of life in Galápagos, one of self-sufficiency and living close to nature. She grew up on the islands and returned to them often over the next five decades. Discovering photography at a young age, she has dedicated her life to recording the islands' natural history in infinite detail. A Lifetime in Galápagos is De Roy's intimate portrait of one of the most spectacular places on Earth, presenting the wildlife and natural wonders of Galápagos as you have never seen them before. Featuring hundreds of breathtaking color photos, this stunning book guides you into labyrinthine mangroves to observe nesting herons, to misty cloud forests to glimpse flycatchers and orchids, high onto erupting volcanoes, and into the ocean to swim with hammerhead sharks. De Roy's lens provides up-close encounters with orca and sperm whales, colonies of iguanas, and the giant tortoises of Alcedo Volcano. She paints unforgettable portraits of her childhood in Galápagos—the islands at night under the stars of the Milky Way, sea lions at play and on the hunt, the diverse birdlife of Galápagos, and much more. Blending striking images with vivid prose, A Lifetime in Galápagos also discusses the threats that global warming and other environmental challenges pose to the archipelago's unique wildlife and fragile habitats.

Book excerpt: The way a community looks at its surroundings is a concept of space and geography that is unique to that population. By examining that concept, one can better understand that community. In the indigenous village of Boruca, located in the southern region of Costa Rica, there is a system of myths that shape their concept of their surroundings. Five main directions are represented by roads that make up the spoke-like concept. Each of the five spokes is significant in its relation to the myths, history, and places that are geographically important. This concept is presented in this paper as well as the principal myths and a toponimic dictionary of the important places.
