Listed in this volume are entries from Anchor to Bend. This book will help readers to identify the arms that were widely displayed in the Middle Ages and which can now be found not only on tombs, monuments and seals, but also on textiles, manuscripts, metalwork, glass, wall paintings, and other medieval artefacts. The index allows even those without any specialist knowledge of the subject to discover the blazons of arms recorded for particular surnames in the medieval period. Produced specifically to enable readers to identify individual coats of arms, it is an invaluable reference for historians, antiquaries, archaeologists, genealogists and those dealing in and collecting medieval objects.

Download or read book English Episcopal Acta 29 written by Philippa Hoskin and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2005-05-26 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This latest edition to the English Episcopal Acta series brings together for the first time edited versions of all the extant charters issued by the bishops of Durham between 1241 and 1283: Nicholas Farnham, Walter Kirkham, Robert Stichill and Robert of Holy Island (the last two, unusually at this date, monastic bishops). The surviving charters provide insights into episcopal administration and estate management in the mid-thirteenth-century diocese. A full introduction considers the lives of these little-studied bishops and the diplomatic of their charters, as well as the unusual structure of the episcopal households here. The bishops' itineraries are also given in an appendix. This volume complements EEA 24IR (0-19-726234-1) and EEA 25 (0-19-726235-X), which contained the acta from 1153 onwards.

Book Monasteries and Society in the British Isles in the Later Middle Ages

Download or read book Monasteries and Society in the British Isles in the Later Middle Ages written by Andrew Abram and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 2008 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years there has been an increasing interest in the history of the numerous houses of monks, canons and nuns which existed in the medieval British Isles, considering them in their wider socio-cultural-economic context; historians are now questioning some of the older assumptions about monastic life in the later Middle Ages, and setting new approaches and new agenda. The present volume reflects these new trends. Its fifteen chapters assess diverse aspects of monastic history, focusing on the wide range of contacts which existed between religious communities and the laity in the later medieval British Isles, covering a range of different religious orders and houses. This period has often been considered to represent a general decline of the regular life; but on the contrary, the essays here demonstrate that there remained a rich monastic culture which, although different from that of earlier centuries, remained vibrant. Book The Hymns on Faith

    Book Details:
  • Author : Saint Ephraem (Syrus)
  • Publisher : CUA Press
  • Release : 2015
  • ISBN : 0813227356
  • Pages : 448 pages

Download or read book The Hymns on Faith written by Saint Ephraem (Syrus) and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ephrem is known for a theology that relies heavily on symbol and for a keen awareness of Jewish exegetical traditions. Yet he is also our earliest source for the reception of Nicaea among Syriac-speaking Christians. It is in his eighty-seven Hymns on Faith - the longest extant piece of early Syriac literature - that he develops his arguments against subordinationist christologies most fully. These hymns, most likely delivered orally and compiled after the author's death, were composed in Nisibis and Edessa between the 350s ans 373. They reveal an author conversant with Christological debates further to the west, but responding in a uniquely Syriac idiom. As such, they form an essential source for reconstructing the development of pro-Nicene thought in the eastern Mediterranean.
