The verdict is accidental death, but his fiancee, Ann Hewitt, suspects there's something more to the story. As the grieving woman recounts the details of Julian's tragic end to psychiatrist Dr. Tony Page, he listens with acute interest - but not for the reason she thinks. Years earlier, he and Julian had been lovers, and now, disturbed by the circumstances of his friend's demise, Tony sets out to uncover the truth. His quest will take him from the parties and pubs of the gay underworld of 1950s London to Scotland Yard and the House of Commons as he uses his shrewd and penetrating insight to find who or what was responsible for Julian's death. But he may discover more than he bargained for - about Julian, and himself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mavis Gallant is the modern master of what Henry James called the international story, the fine-grained evocation of the quandaries of people who must make their way in the world without any place to call their own. The irreducible complexity of the very idea of home is especially at issue in the stories Gallant has written about Montreal, where she was born, although she has lived in Paris for more than half a century. Varieties of Exile, Russell Banks's extensive new selection from Gallant's work, demonstrates anew the remarkable reach of this writer's singular art. Among its contents are three previously uncollected stories, as well as the celebrated semi-autobiographical sequence about Linnet Muir—stories that are wise, funny, and full of insight into the perils and promise of growing up and breaking loose.

Book Palestinians Born in Exile

  • Author : Juliane Hammer
  • Publisher : University of Texas Press

Download or read book Palestinians Born in Exile written by Juliane Hammer and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2009-08-17 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the decade following the 1993 Oslo Peace Accords, some 100,000 diasporic Palestinians returned to the West Bank and Gaza. Among them were children and young adults who were born in exile and whose sense of Palestinian identity was shaped not by lived experience but rather through the transmission and re-creation of memories, images, and history. As a result, "returning" to the homeland that had never actually been their home presented challenges and disappointments for these young Palestinians, who found their lifeways and values sometimes at odds with those of their new neighbors in the West Bank and Gaza. This original ethnography records the experiences of Palestinians born in exile who have emigrated to the Palestinian homeland. Juliane Hammer interviews young adults between the ages of 16 and 35 to learn how their Palestinian identity has been affected by living in various Arab countries or the United States and then moving to the West Bank and Gaza. Their responses underscore how much the experience of living outside of Palestine has become integral to the Palestinian national character, even as Palestinians maintain an overwhelming sense of belonging to one another as a people.

Upon the autumn had fallen a blight of cold and rainy weather, which did not enhance the cheerfulness of daily journey ing between Peckham Rye and Rotherhithe. When it was necessary for him to set forth to the train, he muttered imprecations, for a mood of inactivity pos sessed him; he would gladly have stayed in his com fortable sitting-room, idling over books or only occupied with languid thought. Book excerpt: In Pliocene Europe, warring races of aliens and humans face a new threat from North America in the third novel of the Locus Award–winning sci-fi series. A group of misfits from the twenty-second century have travelled six million years back in time to the Pliocene Epoch. But instead of an uninhabited paradise, they discover a land overrun with two alien races—each possessing great psychic powers—locked in bitter war. After escaping the knightly Tanu, a group of humans forms an uneasy alliance with the dwarfish Firvulag. But even after they succeed in destroying the Tanu capital, the war is far from over. Aiken Drum, a human with awesome mental powers, has usurped the Tanu throne. Aiken faces opposition from skeptical Tanu factions, as well as the revitalized Firvulag, who now out-number the Tanu-human coalition that Aiken has patched together. But another menace emerges to threaten Aiken's rule: a group of fearsome rogues from the year 2083, who have been living quietly in North America for decades. Led by Marc Remillard, they now seek to take advantage of the chaos in King Aiken's Many-Colored Land in order to seize control of the time-portal. The Nonborn King features the same blend of adventure, rich pageantry, humor, and fantastic eroticism that characterized The Many-Colored Land and The Golden Torc.

Book A Chosen Exile

Download or read book A Chosen Exile written by Allyson Hobbs and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2014-10-13 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between the eighteenth and mid-twentieth centuries, countless African Americans passed as white, leaving behind families and friends, roots and community. It was, as Allyson Hobbs writes, a chosen exile, a separation from one racial identity and the leap into another. This revelatory history of passing explores the possibilities and challenges that racial indeterminacy presented to men and women living in a country obsessed with racial distinctions. It also tells a tale of loss. As racial relations in America have evolved so has the significance of passing. To pass as white in the antebellum South was to escape the shackles of slavery. After emancipation, many African Americans came to regard passing as a form of betrayal, a selling of one’s birthright. When the initially hopeful period of Reconstruction proved short-lived, passing became an opportunity to defy Jim Crow and strike out on one’s own. Although black Americans who adopted white identities reaped benefits of expanded opportunity and mobility, Hobbs helps us to recognize and understand the grief, loneliness, and isolation that accompanied—and often outweighed—these rewards. By the dawning of the civil rights era, more and more racially mixed Americans felt the loss of kin and community was too much to bear, that it was time to “pass out” and embrace a black identity. Although recent decades have witnessed an increasingly multiracial society and a growing acceptance of hybridity, the problem of race and identity remains at the center of public debate and emotionally fraught personal decisions.
