Download or read book Blessings for the Hands written by Matthew Schwartz and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-11-15 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From The Sky Inside the Shaking Tree What you feel reveals you. Watch for the sustenance inclined to a source, enamored of singularity, quickly here and quickly gone, shadow from which the body's courage comes. Fireflies apparently stumbling. I slapped one on my leg. Its blood glowed. Blessings for the Hands follows various speakers—often disabled speakers, who never once figure themselves as objects of complaint or self-pity—through the haunted dreamscape of “normalcy.” Indeed, dreams are continuous presences in this unusually subtle and elegant debut collection that juxtaposes physical circumstances with the vast interior life of the imagination. The subjects of Blessings for the Hands are real and imagined confrontations—and reconciliations—between family members, friends, strangers, and animals. Matthew Schwartz’s quasi-autobiographical verse complicates and clarifies the emotions waiting just underneath the patterns and expectations of the speakers’ daylight lives, where anger, joy, corporeality, and mortality all seem to collide. For Schwartz, poetry is a sleight of hand that keeps the reader guessing through nearly imperceptible shifts between present vision and absent reality. Blessings for the Hands is a lyric reckoning of the tension between the life we are given and the life we are determined to lead. “Blessings for the Hands is emotionally strong and imaginatively wild, distinctive, deeply moving, without an ort of self-pity, and pervaded by ‘compassion down to your fingertips’ (which Chekhov said is ‘the only method’ both to write and to live). This angle of vision is sharp enough to unify much disparate material. The poems are clear and musical and consequently a pleasure to read and reread despite their gravity. I think this may be lasting work.”—Michael Ryan

If Hank Wells thinks he can dig up dirt on the new owner of the Honky Tonk beer joint for his employer, he's got no idea what kind of trouble he's courting. Book Born STUBborn

Download or read book Born STUBborn written by Keith Deutsch and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-10-14 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Terror Attacks in New York City on 9/11 played a large role in shaping the future of my entire generation. Due to losing my dad, my idol, to cancer when I was 10, I was already looking for a fight and about to turn 18 in 2001. After a quick and dirty deployment to Iraq with our nations Army, where I lost a leg in combat. I came home to begin a life-long search, not yet realizing the extent of what I left overseas. Looking back, I feel extremely lucky to have been in the right place at the right time and supported by enough of the right people to witness and even maybe help to influence world change. However small my part, my wildest dreams were fulfilled. What a ride. Flaming sambuca shots the night before a big international snowboarding competition was not the way to win. But may have still presented an opportunity to help the team... What I share with you is my perspective on the story of the creation of the sport of Paralympic snowboarding, from its infancy into a blossoming sport, and then on into a regimented and structured professional business. These stories include the quart-ship of a star-studded couple that brought up our sport as if it were truly their child. I'll share with you how the passion of man in pursuit of a woman led the charge to put us up in lights. I want to expand your view of ability. And I want to inspire you. I'll include what it took on a local, a regional, a national, an international and then eventually a Paralympic level as well, because that's the path we took. It took cooperation at all those levels to make it happen. Along the way I got to hug Oprah, I met Fergie, and I ran into the beautiful Miss Lindsay Vohn at an A list party in New York at Carnegie Hall. I was there to present Cher her lifetime achievement award. Snowboard royalty, Senor Blanca himself, once patted me on the back in the gates above a 22 foot super pipe, and when President George W Bush came to Walter Reed Medical Center to award a few of us medals, He used a four letter word while speaking to my mother. Scouts honor!! I guess there was a good reason for it. What I plan to add is a little of my perspective and my account of why our sport took off, what I think made us successful, what motivated, and what inspired me, one of the athletes. This will be a collection of accounts surrounding the abundantly determined individuals that had the required passion for their sport to stick it out against the odds; And to have faith in our collective dream while we were still blazing our own trail. Finally, along the way, I hope to help my daughter understand the meaning of the word, "Perseverance," and show her why I survive, because I was "Born STUBborn!"

Josephine Cox writes a heart-stopping saga in Born to Serve, a tale of courage, fortitude and devastating jealousy. Perfect for fans of Rosie Goodwin and Kitty Neale. 'I can take him away from you any time I want.' Her mistress's cruel taunt is deeply disturbing to Jenny. But why should Claudia be interested in a servant's sweetheart? Jenny reckons without Claudia's vicious nature; using a wily trick she seduces Frank, who, overcome with shame, departs for a new life in Blackburn. Losing her sweetheart is just the first of many disasters that leave Jenny struggling to cope alone. When Claudia gives birth to Frank's baby girl, she cruelly disowns the helpless infant and relies on Jenny to care for little Katie and love her as her own. Always afraid for the beloved child who has come to depend on her, Jenny is constantly called upon to show courage and fortitude to fight for all she holds dear. In her heart she yearns for Frank, believing that one day they must be reunited. When Fate takes a hand, it seems as though Jenny may see her dreams come true...
