European Notebooks offers a window into a civilization that came to maturity during the period in which these essays were written. Melvin J. Lasky was the editor of Encounter from 1958 until 1990; before that he was the editor of Der Monat in Berlin, and served as foreign correspondent for the New York Times and The Reporter.
