Book Bore Erosion and Accuracy of M16A1 Rifle

Download or read book Bore Erosion and Accuracy of M16A1 Rifle written by and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analysis was conducted on the performance of M16A1 rifles made by three manufacturers with the use of two kinds of ammunition and three rates of fire. Data include extreme spread and bore erosion gage measurements, each as a function of the number of rounds fired. Consistency is lacking in the experimental data, even though identical tests were performed. Probably, random vibrations of the gun barrel or other unknown phenomena may be the reason for inconsistency of spread data. Inconsistency in the penetration of erosion gages may be due to fouling deposits on the bore surface and to lack of properly designed tools for unique measurements. Large variations occur in the useful life of the barrels due to variations in manufacturing, ammunition, and firing rate. The typical rate of erosion is about one-thousandth of an inch per thousand rounds of fire. Gage Number 6 may be used to measure barrel erosion and ultimately to indicate when to discard the barrel. Erosion increases and useful life of the weapon decreases with increase in rate of fire. The useful life of the weapon may be approximated as inversely proportional to the two-third power of the firing rate.

Book Correlation of Breech Erosion Gage to Accuracy for M16A1 Rifle with Chrome Plated Barrel Bores

Download or read book Correlation of Breech Erosion Gage to Accuracy for M16A1 Rifle with Chrome Plated Barrel Bores written by and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research is designed to answer the following questions: (1) do calibrated gage rods act as good predictors of the accuracy parameter of extreme spread for M16A1 rifles; and (2) what gage rod diameter gives the better performance for the M16A1 rifle. The data used to answer these questions were obtained from M16A1 rifles test fired at different firing rates for the life of the rifles. For each rifle and gage, the accuracy parameter of extreme spread was recorded with the corresponding gage reading at periodic intervals of rounds fired. The data were analyzed for a relationship between the extreme spread and the gage reading.

Book Analysis of Dispersion Measurements for the M16A1 Rifle with Chrome Plated Bore

Download or read book Analysis of Dispersion Measurements for the M16A1 Rifle with Chrome Plated Bore written by and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is a result of the higher than expected wear out rate of barrels used on the M16A1 rifle during its use in Vietnam. The wear out rate was due to the normal mechanical erosion plus the corrosive effect of the Vietnam environment. To correct this problem, it was decided to chrome plate the bore of all replacement barrels. The sample barrels selected from three manufacturers were fired until they were worn out with accuracy checks taken after each thousand rounds fired. The average value of the extreme spread measure of dispersion was used to establish acceptance and rejection criteria for new barrels and to establish the amount corresponding to a worn out barrel.

Book Barrel Erosion Study of Rifles 5 56mm M16 and Xm16e1 a Joint Army air Force Test

Download or read book Barrel Erosion Study of Rifles 5 56mm M16 and Xm16e1 a Joint Army air Force Test written by P. R. Landry and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twelve rifles, 5.56mm, XM161E1 were fired to the end of their barrel bore service life. Measurements of the barrel bore were taken periodically with an air gage, and an expanding mandrel gage. It was determined that the maximum acceptable barrel bore diameter would be 0.2206 in. The barrel bore was considered serviceable for either overseas or CONUS use if that diameter had not advanced forward of the origin of the rifling further than 3.625 inches. Advancement to 6.625 in. was considered the cut-off for CONUS use only, and advancement beyond 6.625 would constitute complete rejection of the barrel. Gage, Barrel Erosion C7799792, designed by Springfield Armory, is recommended for this purpose. Test procedures are described and results discussed.

Book Physicochemical Aspects of Gun Barrel Erosion and Its Control

Download or read book Physicochemical Aspects of Gun Barrel Erosion and Its Control written by and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gun tube erosion can be defined as the bore surface damage and bore enlargement caused by firing, which can lead to loss in accuracy and the effectiveness of the weapon. It is one of the two major factors on the basis of which gun tubes are condemned; the other factor being fatigue life, Erosion is a complex phenomenon resulting from the interaction of propellant gases and the projectile with the surface of the bore. The bore surface is exposed for a short time to temperature approaching the melting point of steel, pressures as high as 50,000 psi, reactive atmosphere composed of CO, CO2, H2O, H2, N2, and numerous other identified and unidentified constituents. Superimposed on these conditions are the high velocity of gases and swaging action of the projectile rotating band. It is the objective of this presentation to review the physicochemical processes involved in erosion and indicate some critical areas which need further investigation. Also, various efforts to control erosion in barrels will be briefly discussed.

Book Erosion Modeling of the 120 MM M256 M829A2 Gun System

Download or read book Erosion Modeling of the 120 MM M256 M829A2 Gun System written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Benet Laboratories/Software and Engineering Associates, Inc. (SEA) gun barrel erosion modeling and design code predicts wall degradation due to transformations, chemical reactions, and cracking coupled with pure mechanical erosion for the 120-man M256/MS29A2 gun system for ambient temperature-conditioned rounds. The A723 steel and 0.005-inch high contraction (HC) chromium plated/A723 steel wall materials are evaluated for erosion. This complex computer analysis is based on rigorously evaluated scientific theory that has been validated in the rocket community over the last forty years. Our gun erosion analysis includes the standard interior ballistics gun code (XNOVAKTC), the standard nonideal gas-wall thermochemical rocket code modified for guns (CCET). the standard mass addition boundary layer rocket code modified for guns (MABL), and the standard wall material ablation conduction erosion rocket code modified for guns (MACE). In addition, bore subsurface metallographic analysis and projectile-bore finite element analysis (ABAQUS) are considered. Our overall analysis provides wall material erosion predictions and comparisons of ablation, conduction, and erosion profiles as a function of time, travel (customer-selected 27. 61, 86, 130, and 201 inches from the rear face of the tube), and number of rounds to barrel condemnation. The 120-mm M256/M829A2 gun system prediction, with significant numbers of M829A2 rounds, agrees well with the wear and erosion pattern of retired M256 gun barrels.

Book Projectile Engraving Mutations and Their Relationships to Accuracy of the M16A1 Rifle

Download or read book Projectile Engraving Mutations and Their Relationships to Accuracy of the M16A1 Rifle written by and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A two-phase test program was conducted in order to evaluate the hypothesis that changes in the accuracy of a rifle are reflected in changes of the engraving patterns found on projectiles fired from that rifle. Three mutations of projectile engraving characteristics were isolated. These mutations were: (1) widening of the grooves engraved in the projectiles; (2) increasing variation in the lengths of the grooves on a bullet; (3) the appearance of surface mutilation on the bullet jackets. Each of the mutations demonstrated some correlation with accuracy. The widening of the grooves correlated best with accuracy, exhibiting correlation coefficient above .7 over a wide range of firing rates, ammunition types, and barrel manufacturing processes.
