Download or read book Border Patrol Nation written by Todd Miller and published by City Lights Publishers. This book was released on 2014-03-24 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In his scathing and deeply reported examination of the U.S. Border Patrol, Todd Miller argues that the agency has gone rogue since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, trampling on the dignity and rights of the undocumented with military-style tactics … Miller's book arrives at a moment when it appears that part of the Homeland Security apparatus is backpedaling by promising to tone down its tactics, maybe prodded by investigative journalism, maybe by the revelations of NSA leaker Edward Snowden … Border Patrol is quite possibly the right book at the right time … "—Tony Perry, Los Angeles Times "At the start of his unsettling and important new book, Border Patrol Nation, Miller observes that these days 'it is common to see the Border Patrol in places—such as Erie, Pennsylvania; Rochester, New York; or Forks, Washington—where only fifteen years ago it would have seemed far-fetched, if not unfathomable.'”—Barbara Spindel, Christian Science Monitor "Miller’s approach in Border Patrol Nation is to offer a glimpse into the secretive operations of the Border Patrol, reporting with a journalist’s objectivity and nose for a good story. Miller’s book is full of facts, and it’s clear he’s outraged, but he gives voices to people on every side of the issue … Miller’s book is a fascinating read … and bring the work of Susan Orlean to mind."—Amanda Eyre Ward, Kirkus Reviews "Todd Miller's invaluable and gripping book, Border Patrol Nation: Dispatches from the Front Lines of Homeland Security is the story of how this country’s borders are being transformed into up-armored, heavily militarized zones run by a border-industrial complex. It's an achievement and an eye opener."—Tom Engelhardt, TomDispatch "What Jeremy Scahill was to Blackwater, Todd Miller is to the U.S. Border Patrol!"—Tom Miller, author, On the Border: Portraits of America's Southwestern Frontier "Todd Miller has entered a secret world, and he has gone deep … Powerful."—Luis Alberto Urrea, author of The Devil's Highway: A True Story "Journalist Miller tells an alarming story of U.S. Border Patrol and Homeland Security's ever-widening reach into the lives of American citizens and legal immigrants as well as the undocumented. In addition to readers interested in immigration issues, those concerned about the NSA’s privacy violations will likely be even more shocked by the actions of Homeland Security."—Publishers Weekly, Starred Review Armed authorities watch from a military-grade surveillance tower as lines of people stream toward the security checkpoint, tickets in hand, anxious and excited to get through the gate. Few seem to notice or care that the US Border Patrol is monitoring the Super Bowl, as they have for years, one of the many ways that forces created to police the borders are now being used, in an increasingly militarized fashion, to survey and monitor the whole of American society. In fast-paced prose, Todd Miller sounds an alarm as he chronicles the changing landscape. Traveling the country—and beyond—to speak with the people most involved with and impacted by the Border Patrol, he combines these first-hand encounters with careful research to expose a vast and booming industry for high-end technology, weapons, surveillance, and prisons. While politicians and corporations reap substantial profits, the experiences of millions of men, women, and children point to staggering humanitarian consequences. Border Patrol Nation shows us in stark relief how the entire country has become a militarized border zone, with consequences that affect us all. Todd Miller has worked on and written about US border issues for over fifteen years.

Download or read book Desert Duty written by Bill Broyles and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-09-24 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nineteen active duty and retired US Border Patrol agents share stories of working at one of the most dangerous border crossing stations. While politicians and pundits endlessly debate immigration policy, US Border Patrol agents put their lives on the line to enforce immigration law. In a day’s work, agents may catch a load of narcotics, apprehend groups of people entering the country illegally, and intercept a potential terrorist. Their days often include rescuing aliens from death by thirst or murder by border bandits, preventing neighborhood assaults and burglaries, and administering first aid to accident victims, and may involve delivering an untimely baby or helping stranded motorists. As Bill Broyles and Mark Haynes sum it up, “Border Patrol is a hero job,” one that too often goes unrecognized by the public. Desert Duty puts a human face on the Border Patrol. It features interviews with nineteen active-duty and retired agents who have worked at the Wellton, Arizona, station that watches over what is arguably the most perilous crossing along the border, a sparsely populated region of the Sonoran Desert with little water and summer temperatures that routinely top 110°F. The agents candidly discuss the rewards and frustrations of holding the line against illegal immigrants, smugglers, and other criminals, while often having to help the very people they are trying to thwart when they get into trouble in the desert. As one agent explains, “The thrill is tracking ‘em up before they die. It’s a rough ol’ way to go—run outta water in this desert.”

Download or read book Migra written by Kelly Lytle Hernandez and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2010-05-03 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Political awareness of the tensions in U.S.-Mexico relations is rising in the twenty-first century; the American history of its treatment of illegal immigrants represents a massive failure of the promises of the American dream. This is the untold history of the United States Border Patrol from its beginnings in 1924 as a small peripheral outfit to its emergence as a large professional police force that continuously draws intense scrutiny and denunciations from political activism groups. To tell this story, MacArthur "Genius" Fellow Kelly Lytle Hernández dug through a gold mine of lost and unseen records and bits of biography stored in garages, closets, an abandoned factory, and in U.S. and Mexican archives. Focusing on the daily challenges of policing the Mexican border and bringing to light unexpected partners and forgotten dynamics, Migra! reveals how the U.S. Border Patrol translated the mandate for comprehensive migration control into a project of policing immigrants and undocumented “aliens” in the U.S.-Mexico borderlands.

Download or read book Dangerous Red Flags written by Eugene Davis and published by . This book was released on 2019-02-11 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Read the inside story of a U.S. Border Patrol agent who spent almost 30 years patrolling and subsequently managing various teams of law enforcement officers whose duty it was to stop illegal aliens and terrorists from entering the United States. Having begun his career on the U.S.-Mexico border as a journeyman Border Patrol agent in 1971, Eugene Davis worked his way up the ladder and served at a variety of capacities before retiring as the Deputy Chief of the Blaine sector in NW Washington State. "Dangerous Red Flags: My Life as a Border Patrol Agent" offers a unique boots-on-the-ground/firsthand perspective as to how our international borders have been impacted by poor Congressional oversight, along with a clear explanation in regards to our country's, Mexico's, and Canada's misguided immigration/visa policies, which have caused so much hardship to U.S. citizens--such as occurred with the 9/11 tragedy--along with the collateral suffering of the hard-working migrates who continue to flood into the U.S. under the harshest of conditions. At times criticizing his own superiors, Eugene Davis does not pull any punches. He explains the good, the bad, and the ugly as to why millions of undocumented aliens have been able to illegally come to the United States. His is a personal story that delves into the life-risking decisions that our frontline law enforcement officers have to constantly struggle with so as to properly serve and protect their country. Many readers will probably learn for the first time how truly compassionate and well-meaning our Border Patrol agents actually are. Plus, there are true-life examples of the ill-advised shortcuts that were performed on our southern border, such as frustrated Border Patrol agents commandeering private vehicles, along with a disturbing occurrence of how our constitutional protections were once overapplied by a misguided U.S. Attorney on our northern border--via a legal loophole that almost caused a terrorist bomber to be released from custody. Telling insights are also offered in regards to the behind-the-scenes actions that were taken to track down the D.C. snipers, who were first questioned by a Border Patrol agent in Bellingham, WA, before the two killers ever began their murderous crime spree, which eventually killed 17 innocent Americans. Retired Deputy Chief Davis also explains how our out-of-control borders could easily be fixed if Congress would simply pass a comprehension E-Verify law that's similar to the legislation which was initially recommended by Congresswoman Barbara Jordan--who chaired the Commission of Immigration Reform. Davis goes through a step-by-step explanation, with historical facts, as to the primary causes behind our dysfunctional borders and points out that Beltway lobbyists have been pounding a political drumbeat, for many years, to keep wages low for a variety of hourly workers, while at the same time using our country's job magnet to entice undocumented aliens to illegally cross our borders because certain businesses do not want to pay a living wage to our own citizens."Dangerous Red Flags" is a firsthand account of the day-to-day intrigue along the U.S. border and why our immigration policies have been neglected for so many years by those with self-serving political agendas, which have allowed terrorists to enter the U.S. This book explains why tens of thousands of illegal aliens continue to cross the U.S. border and how the situation could easily be corrected in order to help prevent 9/11-type terrorists from entering the country.

Download or read book Border Policing written by Holly M. Karibo and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2020-04-21 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An extensive history examining how North American nations have tried (and often failed) to police their borders, Border Policing presents diverse scholarly perspectives on attempts to regulate people and goods at borders, as well as on the ways that individuals and communities have navigated, contested, and evaded such regulation. The contributors explore these power dynamics though a series of case studies on subjects ranging from competing allegiances at the northeastern border during the War of 1812 to struggles over Indian sovereignty and from the effects of the Mexican Revolution to the experiences of smugglers along the Rio Grande during Prohibition. Later chapters stretch into the twenty-first century and consider immigration enforcement, drug trafficking, and representations of border policing in reality television. Together, the contributors explore the powerful ways in which federal authorities impose political agendas on borderlands and how local border residents and regions interact with, and push back against, such agendas. With its rich mix of political, legal, social, and cultural history, this collection provides new insights into the distinct realities that have shaped the international borders of North America.
Download or read book Proud American written by Sergio Tinoco and published by Austin Macauley. This book was released on 2021-02-26 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Being the only child of a single mother, Sergio was raised by his maternal grandparents in a South Texas region better known as the Rio Grande Valley. This memoir details his upbringing as a poor migrant worker of Mexican descent having to pick crops for a living since the age of seven. As a way to break from the family cycle of picking crops and depending on government welfare programs, Sergio joined the United States Army and served ten years on active duty. He was deployed to Bosnia-Herzegovina shortly after the Bosnian War only to find and deal with the aftermath of the genocide that took place there and be caught in the middle of several attacks. His experiences in Bosnia ultimately led to experiencing signs and symptoms related to PTSD. After completing ten years of military service, Sergio joined the U.S. Border Patrol. Being of Mexican descent and having family in South Texas and in Mexico gave way to new issues of having to counter threats against his family and ill-willed opinions of him for arresting and deporting "his own kind."
