Book Pen Pencil and Poison

Download or read book Pen Pencil and Poison written by Oscar Wilde and published by Lindhardt og Ringhof. This book was released on 2022-04-06 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Pen, Pencil, and Poison’ is one of Wilde’s most intriguing essays. Part biography, part social commentary, and part philosophical debate, he writes the biography of an art critic, who was also convicted of murder. However, in true Wildean style, there’s more to the essay than meets the eye. While documenting the life and crimes of Thomas Griffiths Wainwright, Wilde explores the ideas of dual identity, sin in the formation of the personality, and the relationship between crime and culture. ‘Pen, Pencil, and Poison’ is a fascinating insight into some of the conventions of the time. Oscar Wilde (1854 – 1900) was an Irish novelist, poet, playwright, and wit. He was an advocate of the Aesthetic movement, which extolled the virtues of art for the sake of art. During his career, Wilde wrote nine plays, including ‘The Importance of Being Earnest,’ ‘Lady Windermere’s Fan,’ and ‘A Woman of No Importance,’ many of which are still performed today. His only novel, ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’ was adapted for the silver screen, in the film, ‘Dorian Gray,’ starring Ben Barnes and Colin Firth. In addition, Wilde wrote 43 poems, and seven essays. His life was the subject of a film, starring Stephen Fry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Books and Their Writers Let me make it quite clear at the outset: I have laid no claims to be thought a literary critic: the following papers are not studies in literature. While other men were more healthily and patriotically em ployed in digging up their allotments and gardens, for physical reasons I was forced to confine my self to the garden Of my mind, by no means a fruitful soil: I have but little creative genius: abandoning this barren task I then began to dig in the gardens of other men's minds: this book is the result. All I have sought to do has been to convey some of the pleasure I have gained from desultory reading of all kinds during the last few years, to those who take the trouble to turn these pages the art of criticism is not mine. I have not obtruded my own personality more than was abso lutely necessary. I have merely walked about pro lific vineyards and orchards and plucked a cluster of grapes here, a plum there, to entice you to share some of my golden pleasures. That I have missed some of the best will be Obvious to any one who looks at the chapter-headings that I have included much unripe and indigestible, or over-ripe and putrid fruit I beg leave to deny. There was so much that was very good that I could have filled another volume with ease. Some of these essays have already appeared in print. For permission to include them in this volume I wish to thank the editors of The. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Mysteries of Pittsburgh

Download or read book The Mysteries of Pittsburgh written by Michael Chabon and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2011-12-20 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pulitzer Prize–winning author’s “astonishing” debut novel, about a son’s struggle to find his own identity and integrity (The New York Times). Michael Chabon, author of The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, Moonglow, and The Yiddish Policeman’s Union, is one of the most acclaimed talents in contemporary fiction. The Mysteries of Pittsburgh, published when Chabon was just twenty-five, is the beautifully crafted debut that propelled him into the literary stratosphere. Art Bechstein may be too young to know what he wants to do with his life, but he knows what he doesn’t want: the life of his father, a man who laundered money for the mob. He spends the summer after graduation finding his own way, experimenting with a group of brilliant and seductive new friends: erudite Arthur Lecomte, who opens up new horizons for Art; mercurial Phlox, who confounds him at every turn; and Cleveland, a poetry-reciting biker who pulls him inevitably back into his father’s mobbed-up world. A New York Times bestseller, The Mysteries of Pittsburgh was called “astonishing” by Alice McDermott, and heralded the arrival of one of our era’s great voices. This ebook features a biography of the author.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Authors: A Hand-Book of American Literature From Early Colonial to Living Writers To prepare a text-book of American literature is a difficult task. It 'is utterly impossible to give every writer a place in so small a compass, and, as a matter of fact, justice cannot be done every section of our broad land. Especially do we realize this to be true, when we discover that in the South alone there are over writers, to say naught of the remaining three-sections. While we trust a spirit of fairness shall per vade our work, we know that in the judgment of many wise critics some names will be omitted contrary to their opinion, and many inserted which they think should have been omitted. Every compiler of a work of this kind is subject to this criticism. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Book American Fiction Classic Reprint

Download or read book American Fiction Classic Reprint written by Edgar Allan Poe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-01 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Fiction This contribution to the technique of the American short story, though of great importance, was not unique: almost simultaneously with Hawthorne, Poe, with more attention to technique and a wider range of subject and of mood, was strengthening what has so far been our most distinctive American contribution to prose fiction. The detective story, the tale of horror, and the story of the grotesque were all executed by Poe with the same attention to form. Whatever one may think of his sense of probability and of his some what tricky use of devices for hypnotizing the reader, one cannot possibly deny the service of his stories - or the serv ice of the criticism with which they were accompanied - to the upbuilding of an important school. It is singular, in view of the humor and the formlessness of so much early American writing, that both Poe and Hawthorne should have thus persistently combined masterly correctness with an almost obstinate preference for horror, mystery, and gloom. In these two great founders of our fiction there is no marked localization: both are vivid - Poe brilliantly and Hawthorne quietly so - yet neither is much interested in studying any particular region. Their successors have, how ever, almost with one accord, studied the landscape, the dialect, and most Of all the manner of life in various American localities. Of these writers of American short stories distinguished for their careful employment of local color, Bret Harte deserves special notice, because of the novelty of his material and the tremendous sensation which his Cali formia stories produced in the seventies. Since his day every section of the country has been more or less successfully, but always carefully, represented in the short story.
