Book Up from History

Download or read book Up from History written by Robert Jefferson Norrell and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2011-04-30 with total page 523 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1960s, Martin Luther King, Jr., has personified black leadership with his use of direct action protests against white authority. A century ago, in the era of Jim Crow, Booker T. Washington pursued a different strategy to lift his people. In this compelling biography, Norrell reveals how conditions in the segregated South led Washington to call for a less contentious path to freedom and equality. He urged black people to acquire economic independence and to develop the moral character that would ultimately gain them full citizenship. Although widely accepted as the most realistic way to integrate blacks into American life during his time, WashingtonÕs strategy has been disparaged since the 1960s. The first full-length biography of Booker T. in a generation, Up from History recreates the broad contexts in which Washington worked: He struggled against white bigots who hated his economic ambitions for blacks, African-American intellectuals like W. E. B. Du Bois who resented his huge influence, and such inconstant allies as Theodore Roosevelt. Norrell details the positive power of WashingtonÕs vision, one that invoked hope and optimism to overcome past exploitation and present discrimination. Indeed, his ideas have since inspired peoples across the Third World that there are many ways to struggle for equality and justice. Up from History reinstates this extraordinary historical figure to the pantheon of black leaders, illuminating not only his mission and achievement but also, poignantly, the man himself.

Excerpt: ...he chose the better part, that which perpetuated the race. "When in 1776 the Negro was asked to decide between British oppression and American independence, we find him choosing the better part, and Crispus Attucks, a Negro, was the first to shed his blood on State street, Boston, that the white American might enjoy liberty forever, though his race remained in slavery. "When in 1814, at New Orleans, the test of patriotism came again, we find the Negro choosing the better part, and Gen. Andrew Jackson himself testifying that no heart was more loyal and no arm more strong and useful in defense of righteousness. "When the long and memorable struggle came between union and separation, when we knew that victory on one hand meant freedom, and defeat on the other his continued enslavement, with a full knowledge of the portentous meaning of it all, when the suggestion and temptation came to burn the home and massacre wife and children during the absence of the master in battle, and thus insure his liberty, we find him choosing the better part, and for four long years protecting and supporting the helpless, defenseless ones entrusted to his care. "When in 1863 the cause of the union seemed to quiver in the balance, and there were doubt and distrust, the Negro was asked to come to the rescue in arms, and the valor displayed at Fon Wagner and Port Hudson and Fort Pillow testifies most eloquently again that the Negro ch the better part. "When a few months ago the safety and honor the white regiment, and to occupy at the same time the post of greatest danger. "This country has been most fortunate in her victories. She has twice measured arms with England and has won. She has met the spirit of rebellion within her borders...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Story of My Life and Work by Booker T. Washington is a story that will inspire every reader, regardless of your background. Mr. Washington was a slave until he was nine years old, but he didn't let that keep him from achieving greatness and earning respect. Early Civil Rights Activist College President and Founder ( Tuskegee Institute, which is now Tuskegee University ) Advisor to Multiple Presidents Co-Founder of National Negro Business League Fought disenfranchisement \ Jim Crowe Laws through education and entrepreneurship Master Fundraiser Coalition Builder Booker T. Washington (1856-1915) was one of the most influential African American leaders of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Born a slave in Hale's Ford, Virginia, Washington moved to West Virginia after the Civil War, where he learned to read while working in a coal mine. After several years of part-time schooling, he enrolled full-time at the Hampton Institute, a secondary school for African Americans, and graduated in 1875. Washington spent the next six years teaching school in West Virginia and at Hampton before accepting an offer to start a brand-new school in Tuskegee, Alabama. Washington founded what is today Tuskegee University in 1881 and spent the rest of his life making that institution financially viable and academically respected. Washington was a key proponent of African-American businesses and one of the founders of the National Negro Business League. His base was the Tuskegee Institute, a historically black college in Tuskegee, Alabama. As lynching's in the South reached a peak in 1895, Washington gave a speech, known as the "Atlanta compromise", which brought him national fame. He called for black progress through education and entrepreneurship, rather than trying to challenge directly the Jim Crow segregation and the disenfranchisement of black voters in the South. Washington mobilized a nationwide coalition of middle-class blacks, church leaders, and white philanthropists and politicians, with a long-term goal of building the community's economic strength and pride by a focus on self-help and schooling. The Story of My Life and Work was first published in 1900 and was ghostwritten for Washington by a young African American journalist named Edgar Webber. Washington urged his publishers to sell this book to poor, predominantly African American buyers--so that wealthier, more educated couldn't condemn the work. The Story of My Life and Work was very popular and sold more than 75,000 copies in its first four years. The book begins by recalling Washington's first realization that "my mother and I were slaves," when he awakens one morning to find his mother "kneeling over me, fervently praying as was her custom to do, that someday she and her children might be free". The Tuskegee Institute gained some fame during World War II for having been the University where the Tuskegee Airmen were schooled. The Tuskegee Airmen were the first African-American military aviators in the United States Armed Forces. Although some modern-day civil rights activists may frown on his methods, it is clear that Mr. Washington was working towards progress. He made black lives matter by virtue of their education and entrepreneurship in society. He helped prepare people for the workforce and to start their own businesses. Mr. Washington knew that it was not enough, to be free from slavery, blacks needed to be able to participate in the economy. Along with education, He promoted having "Integrity and industry." He would say, "No man that has them ever gets into police court or before the grand jury or in the workhouse...

Book excerpt: The Atlanta Compromise was an address by African-American leader Booker T. Washington on September 18, 1895. Given to a predominantly White audience at the Cotton States and International Exposition in Atlanta, Georgia, the speech has been recognized as one of the most important and influential speeches in American history. The compromise was announced at the Atlanta Exposition Speech. The primary architect of the compromise, on behalf of the African-Americans, was Booker T. Washington, president of the Tuskegee Institute. Supporters of Washington and the Atlanta compromise were termed the "Tuskegee Machine." The agreement was never written down. Essential elements of the agreement were that blacks would not ask for the right to vote, they would not retaliate against racist behavior, they would tolerate segregation and discrimination, that they would receive free basic education, education would be limited to vocational or industrial training (for instance as teachers or nurses), liberal arts education would be prohibited (for instance, college education in the classics, humanities, art, or literature). After the turn of the 20th century, other black leaders, most notably W. E. B. Du Bois and William Monroe Trotter - (a group Du Bois would call The Talented Tenth), took issue with the compromise, instead believing that African-Americans should engage in a struggle for civil rights. W. E. B. Du Bois coined the term "Atlanta Compromise" to denote the agreement. The term "accommodationism" is also used to denote the essence of the Atlanta compromise. After Washington's death in 1915, supporters of the Atlanta compromise gradually shifted their support to civil rights activism, until the modern Civil rights movement commenced in the 1950s. Booker Taliaferro Washington (April 5, 1856 - November 14, 1915) was an African-American educator, author, orator, and advisor to presidents of the United States. Between 1890 and 1915, Washington was the dominant leader in the African-American community. Washington was of the last generation of black American leaders born into slavery and became the leading voice of the former slaves and their descendants, who were newly oppressed by disfranchisement and the Jim Crow discriminatory laws enacted in the post-Reconstruction Southern states in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1895 his Atlanta compromise called for avoiding confrontation over segregation and instead putting more reliance on long-term educational and economic advancement in the black community.

Book Booker T Washington Builder of a Civilization

Download or read book Booker T Washington Builder of a Civilization written by Emmett Jay Scott and published by . This book was released on 1916 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The exhaustive "Life and Letters of Booker T. Washington" remains still to be compiled. In this more modest work we have simply sought to present and interpret the chief phases of the life of this man who rose from a slave boy to be the leader of ten millions of people and to take his place for all time among America's great men. In fact, we have not even touched upon his childhood, early training and education, because we felt the story of those early strug gles and privations had been ultimately well told in his own words in "Up from Slavery." This autobiography, however, published as it was fifteen years before his death, brings the story of his life only to the threshold of his greatest achievements. In this book we seek to give the full fruition of his life's work. Each chapter is complete in itself. Each presents a complete, although by no means exhaustive, picture of some phase of his life.
