Book The Impact of Publicity on Corporate Offenders

Download or read book The Impact of Publicity on Corporate Offenders written by Brent Fisse and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1983-01-01 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uncertainty surrounds the use of publicity as a means of controlling corporate crime. On the one hand, some agree with Justice Brandeis's dictum that light is "the best of disinfectants...the most efficient policeman." On the other hand, many believe that corporations' internal affairs are effectively shrouded with a thick fog that prevents the light of public scrutiny from reaching them. The Impact of Publicity on Corporate Offenders is the first study to go beyond the rhetoric, through an examination of corporate experience. Fisse and Braithwaite have carried out a qualitative inquiry concerning 17 large corporations involved in publicity crises. Based mainly on interviews, the inquiry includes company employees and former employees, union officials, officers of government regulatory agencies, competitors, independent accountants, government prosecutors, public interest activists, judicial officers, stockbrokers, and other experts.

Book Corporate Power and Canadian Capitalism

Download or read book Corporate Power and Canadian Capitalism written by William K. Carroll and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Challenging standard dependency theory, William Carroll argues from empirical evidence that Canada's financial-industrial elite have maintained and consolidated their competitive position at the centre of an inter-corporate network. Corporate Power and Canadian Capitalism thus acknowledges the unusually high degree to which capital is concentrated in a relatively few giant corporations in Canada, but it denies that these commercial interests are subordinated to American corporate capital. To test the validity of this new perspective on the transformation of indigenous capitalists into a national bourgeoisie, Carroll traces the accumulation of capital in the largest Canadian corporations and the institutional relations that have existed among the same firms since World War II. Instead of selling out to foreign capital, Canadian firms have in fact become increasingly interlocked, and Canadian-controlled firms have been and continue to be the focus of both the industrial and financial sectors, with foreign-controlled companies occupying decidedly peripheral positions. From this interpretative position, Canada's development is seen as markedly similar to that of other advanced capitalist countries, culminating in consolidation of control under an elite accompanied both by penetration of foreign economies by domestic financial capitalists and a concomitant penetration of the domestic economy by foreign capital.

Book Wealth by Stealth

Download or read book Wealth by Stealth written by Harry Glasbeek and published by Between the Lines. This book was released on 2002-10-01 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How is it that corporations are able to behave irresponsibly, criminally, and undemocratically? Wealth by Stealth is a scathing introduction to the operations of the modern corporation, written by a corporate lawyer. Many writers point to the growth of undemocratic corporate power. Glasbeek takes these observations further and outlines clearly how corporations become so powerful. He also shows how they are able to act without regard to the behaviour and laws governing citizens and other groups. Glasbeek is known by generations of students for his brilliant, funny lectures at Osgoode Hall Law School. With Wealth by Stealth his informative critique of corporate behaviour becomes available and accessible to all.

Book Uneasy Partnership

Download or read book Uneasy Partnership written by Geoffrey Hale and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this new edition of Uneasy Partnership, Geoffrey Hale examines the interdependent relationship between Canadian governments and businesses, considering governments’ multiple roles in the economy and their implications for the business environment. Hale provides an overview of the historical dimensions of Canada’s political economy and relations between government and business. Readers are invited to consider topics such as corporate power, the implications of Canada's economic structure, regional economic differences, the cross-cutting effects of globalization, and the role of interest groups in political and policy processes. In a thoughtful and well-researched style, Hale lays out how the partnership between business and government in Canada is an uneasy one—and one whose capacity to adapt to ongoing change is essential in an uncertain world.

Book Freedom of Information and Social Science Research Design

Download or read book Freedom of Information and Social Science Research Design written by Kevin Walby and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-11-25 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This multidisciplinary volume demonstrates how Freedom of Information (FOI) law and processes can contribute to social science research design across sociology, criminology, political science, anthropology, journalism and education. Comparing the use of FOI in research design across the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, Canada and South Africa, it provides readers with resources to carry out FOI requests and considers the influence such requests can have on debates within multiple disciplines. In addition to exploring how scholars can use FOI disclosures in conjunction with interview data, archival data and other datasets, this collection explains how researchers can systematically analyse FOI disclosures. Considering the challenges and dilemmas in using FOI processes in research, it examines the reasons why many scholars continue to rely on more easily accessible data, when much of the real work of governance, the more clandestine but consequential decisions and policy moves made by government officials, can only be accessed using FOI requests.

Book Class Ideologies and Educational Futures

Download or read book Class Ideologies and Educational Futures written by D W. Livingstone and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-05-16 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a systematic and detailed analysis of class relations in advanced capitalist societies as a basis for understanding both class differences in educational practices and the relative effects of class and other social background factors on public attitudes toward education. Secondly, the book offers an empirically-grounded summary of the contending educational ideologies in advanced capitalism, through a discourse analysis of the public statements of spokes-persons for major class groupings. Thirdly, using the data from several public opinion surveys in Ontario, profiles of public attitudes on critical education issues are interpreted in terms of the actual effects of class and other social background factors, as well as the mediating influences of contending ideologies. Finally a general approach and array of tactics for creating practical alternative educational and social futures are illustrated through the book.
