Book excerpt: Excerpt from Book-Prices Current, Vol. 5: A Record of the Prices at Which Books Have Been Sold at Auction, From December, 1890, to November, 1891 A general view of the sales by auction which have been held from December, 1890, to November, 1891, discloses very little out of the common, very little, that 15 to say, which can be regarded as essentially novel or of paramount importance. The most notice able dispersion of the year was undoubtedly that of the Brayton Ives Library, which took place at New York 1n March, and realized rather more than This splendid collection comprised many works which are but 1arely brought to the hammer at the present day, and which, perhaps, not unnaturally, have come to be regarded as the aristocracy of the bookshelf. The desperate anxiety to secure rare works of the class more particularly alluded to, namely, early printed volumes illustrating the rise of the typo graphic art, or referring 1n some way or other to the early history of some count1y and its people, whose rugged and primitive virtues have built up for after ages the fabric of an empire, excites some thing more than a suspicion that these old and, for the most art, forgotten volumes are fast slipping away from private custo y to that of the woild's great puhl1e libraries, where they will, in the ordinary course of events, lie embalmed till they crumble into dust. The library antiquary may, however, seek comfort, if he can, in the bare reflection that the newest things grow old at last, and the book which is printed to-day may possibly in the lapse of years assume an importance we may certainly dream of, but which we can never hope to realize. Time works wonders, and circumstances, apparently accidental, may unite to glorify a book or to debase it. Any single volume of Book Pn'ces Current contains much matter for future guidance, but more for present reflection, if only it be handled aright. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Book-Prices Current, Vol. 3: A Record of the Prices at Which Books Have Been Sold at Auction, From December, 1888, to November, 1889 The number of sales by auction reported in this volume amounts to fifty-six, as against forty-nine reported in Vol. II, and seventy three in Vol. I, and although there is nothing very remarkable in any of these sales individually, yet in the aggregate the afford a bird's-eye view extending over the whole range of Eng ish litera ture. The same may be said, to some extent, of each of the other volumes of book-prices Current already issued, but a glance at the Index of this third volume discloses a larger assortment of books, and the absence of much of that monotonous recurrence which was especially noticeable in the other two. This may fairly be claimed as a distinct advantage, though it is subject to the. Usual exception with regard to the illustrated works of popular modern authors. These seem to be still increasing in number and in rice, though the amounts realised at the mansfield-mackenzie S e, in March last, for works of this class (post, p. 86 et seq.) were quite phenomenal. Beauty and a propriateness of binding, and excellence of condition, contribute alike to the realisation of the largest amounts ever paid for picture books of the kind. The same library was noticeable for the large number of theatrical works it contained many of these were of the greatest rarity, and in the finest condition. The Burnett Sale, in April (post, p. 153 et se was also remarkable, though toa less extent, for Similar reasons. The sale of the season was, however, undoubtedly that reported on.
