Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The great temple of Amen-Ra at Thebes... is oriented to the setting sun of the season so important to Egyptians, that of the summer solstice, and this fact strengthens the opinion that Amen was considered to be a god in some way presiding over the course of the year and its right measurement. -from "Amen and the Egyptian Year" First published in 1903 as Ancient Calendars and Constellations, this overview of early astronomical observations and how they influenced the belief systems and religions of early civilizations quickly became a resource later scholars looked to for guidance. From the very beginnings of astronomy, nearly 8,000 years ago, to the more "modern" ancient astronomies of Greece, Egypt, India, Persia, and China, this charming and erudite book will fascinate students of science, history, and mythology as well as lovers of the night sky.

Book excerpt: Dates form the backbone of written history. But where do these dates come from? Many different calendars were used in the ancient world. Some of these calendars were based upon observations or calculations of regular astronomical phenomena, such as the first sighting of the new moon crescent that defined the beginning of the month in many calendars, while others incorporated schematic simplifications of these phenomena, such as the 360-day year used in early Mesopotamian administrative practices in order to simplify accounting procedures. Historians frequently use handbooks and tables for converting dates in ancient calendars into the familiar BC/AD calendar that we use today. But very few historians understand how these tables have come about, or what assumptions have been made in their construction. The seven papers in this volume provide an answer to the question what do we know about the operation of calendars in the ancient world, and just as importantly how do we know it? Topics covered include the ancient and modern history of the Egyptian 365-day calendar, astronomical and administrative calendars in ancient Mesopotamia, and the development of astronomical calendars in ancient Greece. This book will be of interest to ancient historians, historians of science, astronomers who use early astronomical records, and anyone with an interest in calendars and their development.

Download or read book Sacred Ritual written by Bryan C. Babcok and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2014-05-05 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Israelite festival calendar texts (Exod 23; 34; Lev 23; Num 28–29; Deut 16; and Ezek 45) share many features; however, there are also differences. Some of the most-often-cited differences are the following: festival dates, festival locations, date of the New Year, festival timing, and festival names. Scholars have explored these distinctions, and many have concluded that different sources (authors/redactors) wrote the various calendars at different times in Israelite history. Scholars use these dissimilarities to argue that Lev 23 was written in the exilic or postexilic era. Babcock offers a new translation and analysis of a second-millennium B.C. multimonth ritual calendar text from Emar (Emar 446) to challenge the late dating of Lev 23. Babcock argues that Lev 23 preserves an early (2nd-millennium) West Semitic ritual tradition. Building on the recent work of Klingbeil and Sparks, this book presents a new comparative methodology for exploring potential textual relationships. Babcock investigates the attributes of sacred ritual through the lens of sacred time, sacred space and movement, sacred objects, ritual participants, and ritual sound. The author begins with a study of ancient Near Eastern festival texts from the 3rd millennium through the 1st millennium. This analysis focuses on festival cycles, common festival attributes, and the role of time and space in ritual. Babcock then moves on to an intertextual study of biblical festival texts before completing a thorough investigation of both Lev 23 and Emar 446. The result is a compelling argument that Lev 23 preserves an early West Semitic festival tradition and does not date to the exilic era—refuting the scholarly consensus. This illuminating reading stands as a model for future research in the field of ritual and comparative textual studies.

Book Egypt s Ancient Calendars and Covenants

Download or read book Egypt s Ancient Calendars and Covenants written by Dennis J. Foley and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2011-10-25 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is 80 pages with 13 chapters and 58,180 words. It contains the Calendars and the man made Covenants of timed Reenactments, Reincarnations, and Covenant agreements and destinies of specific people, begun by the Pyramid builder-rulers of the 4th through the 8th Dynasties of Egypt. The One God 'Avatar Man' Calendar emerging from these Calendars was in contrast and often conflict with the 'Holy Family' or 'August Man' Calendar of the August or 8th Dynasty builder-rulers! The 'Avatar Man' Calendar itself, which has been maintained into the 18th C.A.D., was begun by the founder of the 7th Dynasty, the Phallum Seta or Scythia. She was the exilled widow of the once beloved Pharaoh Seth and emerged as the leader of a counter invasion of Egypt, circa 2470 B.C..It was for her, the daughter of Cheops, that Seth fashioned the Great Sphinx as the Protector of Egypt! This Calendar promoted the occurrence of 'One God' prophets every 780 years, half an Etanic Cycle of 1560 years. The 'August Man' Calendar periods were in turn 800 year periods, with the two Calendars so timed in their start dates as to conjoin in 30 B.C., the year that the Roman Empire was officially proclaimed, and the first year of a then new House of 2,600 years in the Ten House Precession of Equinox Calendar. The Prophets and leaders of the once devine pair of the Sun and Moon God and Goddess of Seti and Scythia were followed by the Sun Moon God Man Apophis (Apollo), the Phrophet Elijah, John the Baptist, the Prophet Mohammed and Caliph al Mansur, the founder of the Second Caliphate, to Martin Luther. The conflict between those influenced by the Avatar Calendar verses the August Man Calendar evolved into the the 'Warring Twins', i.e. the two master Masonic Orders.A history of their conflicts and interactions in Calendar timings, from 1366 to 2011, is included in this book and is a mainstay section of my book 'A History of the Twins, the Book of (Lodge) Formations'...The chapter 'The 4 Horsemen of 2012' concludes the book, with the same terrestrial astronomy of the Pyramid builders, which predicted and explains the world 'end times' we are indeed now in again! The Table of Contents.Pages 1. Book Asteroid Answers to Ancient Calendar Mysteries

Download or read book Asteroid Answers to Ancient Calendar Mysteries written by Herbert B. Stollorz and published by Faith in Future Foundation. This book was released on 2008-07-03 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ancient calendars found around the world are designed to end one point in time. They communicate an urgent warning to everyone alive today! Complex bronze and gold clocks with multiple dials are found in museums around the world. Why they have such advanced intricacy has stumped scientists for hundreds of years. This book reveals why the ancients built so many pyramids, observatories as well as those complex gold and bronze clocks with more than one dial. It surprised me greatly to discover that their various complex designs in one way or another converge on 21 December 2012. It amazes me that ancient cultures separated by thousands of miles of geography and thousands of years in chronology agree so precisely in the cyclical nature of time, history and prophecy, which is history written in advance. The most famous example is the Mayan-Aztec calendar, which ends its 25,626-year cycle on that momentous date. Some researchers have also found 21 December 2012 in what is called, the Bible Code. Using very different research methods, I discovered it in the Bible's book of Revelation and Daniel's prophecies. It is one of the most important dates in the plan of God for all humanity!

Book Origin and Transformation of the Ancient Israelite Festival Calendar

Download or read book Origin and Transformation of the Ancient Israelite Festival Calendar written by Jan A. Wagenaar and published by Otto Harrassowitz Verlag. This book was released on 2005 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book focusses on the origin and transformation of the priestly festival calendar. Since the epoch-making work of Julius Wellhausen at the end of the 19th century the differences between the various ancient Israelite festival calendars have often been explained in terms of a gradual evolution, which shows an increasing historicisation, denaturalisation and ritualisation. The festivals were in Wellhausen's view gradually detached from agricultural conditions and celebrated more and more at fixed points in the year. This study tries to show that the changes in the priestly festival calendar reflect a conscious effort to adapt the ancient Israelite festival calendar to the semi-annual layout of the Babylonian festival year. The ramifications of the change only come to the fore after a careful study of the agricultural conditions of ancient Israel - and Mesopotamia - makes clear that passover and the festival of unleavened bread were originally celebrated in the second month of the year. The first month of the year envisaged by the priestly festival calendar for the celebration of passover and the festival of unleavened bread in turn mirrors the date of one of the two semi-annual Babylonian New Year festivals. The two Babylonian New Year festivals were celebrated exactly six months apart at the vernal and autumnal equinoxes. In order to adapt the ancient Israelite festival calendar to the Babylonian scheme with two New Year festivals a year, the date of passover and the festival of unleavened bread had to be moved up by one month. The consequences for the origin of passover, the festival of unleavened bread, the festival of weeks and the festival of huts are charted and the relations between the various ancient Israelite festival calendars are determined anew.
