Book excerpt: A very real, and very worrisome reality for schools, teachers, parents and employers – is that our college and high school Millennials are often unrealistic and unprepared, about work and working. No news flash there, for sure. Moreover, there’s justifiable concern that our young adults today, tend to believe that they’re “entitled” to great jobs, big salaries, material possessions and all of the fun, glory and perks that come from years of hard work: but without the proper training, years, or hard work. That kind of troubling, misguided thinking is why Millennials are also labeled, the Entitlement Generation. Go figure, right. Now, regardless of their actual behavior or outlook (for sure, not all young adults think or act that way) - this generalization of entitlement, coupled with an understandable lack of experience, preparation and wherewithal given their age - puts working-age Millennials at an understandable disadvantage when they think about and look for employment, and then after, as they begin their professional jobs. To complicate matters, they’re also inevitably dealing with a boatload of personal changes (both good and bad) that can be incredibly demanding, complicated and even painful. Talk about multi-tasking. Confronting, managing and harnessing the dynamics of this newly blended personal/professional life - is precisely where, why and how Pocket PorchLights can help. After all, that’s its mission. Pocket PorchLights is an edu-taining guide to help working Millennials with career-centric life skills. Heartfelt and purpose-driven, it provides enlightening insights and perspectives, along with practical tools and recommendations, to help working Millennials (and by extension their schools, teachers, parents and employers) navigate, develop, manage and enjoy their new jobs, and new life. Mutual success is good. Pocket PorchLights is an important, fun and meaningful book. It will challenge, educate and inspire.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thorough, accessible, and rigorous presentation of the central theorems of mathematical logic . . . ideal for advanced students of mathematics, computer science, and logic Logic of Mathematics combines a full-scale introductory course in mathematical logic and model theory with a range of specially selected, more advanced theorems. Using a strict mathematical approach, this is the only book available that contains complete and precise proofs of all of these important theorems: * Gödel's theorems of completeness and incompleteness * The independence of Goodstein's theorem from Peano arithmetic * Tarski's theorem on real closed fields * Matiyasevich's theorem on diophantine formulas Logic of Mathematics also features: * Full coverage of model theoretical topics such as definability, compactness, ultraproducts, realization, and omission of types * Clear, concise explanations of all key concepts, from Boolean algebras to Skolem-Löwenheim constructions and other topics * Carefully chosen exercises for each chapter, plus helpful solution hints At last, here is a refreshingly clear, concise, and mathematically rigorous presentation of the basic concepts of mathematical logic-requiring only a standard familiarity with abstract algebra. Employing a strict mathematical approach that emphasizes relational structures over logical language, this carefully organized text is divided into two parts, which explain the essentials of the subject in specific and straightforward terms. Part I contains a thorough introduction to mathematical logic and model theory-including a full discussion of terms, formulas, and other fundamentals, plus detailed coverage of relational structures and Boolean algebras, Gödel's completeness theorem, models of Peano arithmetic, and much more. Part II focuses on a number of advanced theorems that are central to the field, such as Gödel's first and second theorems of incompleteness, the independence proof of Goodstein's theorem from Peano arithmetic, Tarski's theorem on real closed fields, and others. No other text contains complete and precise proofs of all of these theorems. With a solid and comprehensive program of exercises and selected solution hints, Logic of Mathematics is ideal for classroom use-the perfect textbook for advanced students of mathematics, computer science, and logic.

Download or read book Pure Logic and Other Minor Works written by William Stanley Jevons and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pure Logic and Other Minor Works In the present volume are contained some of the earliest and some of the latest contributions of the author to the science of logic. The several works and papers that have been included fall into two distinctly marked groups, corresponding on the whole to the difference in time of their composition, and presenting at first sight no very clear indication of common aim or principle. The first group consists of independently published works, the Pure Logic and the Substitution of Similars, with certain papers in which the general principles of the author's logical theory, stated in their most mature form in his main logical works, the Principles of Science and the Studies in Deductive Logic, are carried out in certain special directions. In the second group appear such portions of a general examination of J. S. Mills philosophy as had been completed at the date of the author's death. The essays in the first group seem to claim a place in a permanent collection of the authors works, partly from the historic importance that must always attach to them, partly by reason of the relative fulness of discussion which they extend to certain fundamental and characteristic ideas in the general view of logic contained in them. They are reprinted as they originally appeared, with only the correction of one or two obvious misprints. Book Logic of the Fall

Download or read book Logic of the Fall written by Richard Arnold and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2006 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Logic of the Fall is the first book to examine the formal logical properties of central speeches and dialogues in Paradise Lost, according to John Milton's formulae, principles, and concerns in his own Art of Logic. In so doing, this book offers unconventional but cogent readings of this poem's central issues: the respective roles and responsibilities of Adam and Eve; the method of Satan's engineering of the Fall (and on who falls first); the causative properties of the Fall and the issue of culpability; and Milton's ultimate legacy for his readership. The Fall of humankind in Paradise Lost is not due to passion or will over reason, but rather to «pure reason» over «right reason.»

Book excerpt: Combinatory logic is one of the most versatile areas within logic that is tied to parts of philosophical, mathematical, and computational logic. Functioning as a comprehensive source for current developments of combinatory logic, this book is the only one of its kind to cover results of the last four decades. Using a reader-friendly style, the author presents the most up-to-date research studies. She includes an introduction to combinatory logic before progressing to its central theorems and proofs. The text makes intelligent and well-researched connections between combinatory logic and lambda calculi and presents models and applications to illustrate these connections.
