Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The riveting second book in the #1 New York Times bestselling Door of No Return trilogy stars Kofi’s granddaughter, Charley, who’s set on becoming the first female pitcher to play professional ball but who soon has to contend with the tensions about to boil over in her segregated town. You can’t protect her from knowing. The truth is all we have. 12-year old Charley Cuffey is many things: a granddaughter, a best friend, and probably the best pitcher in all of Lee’s Mill. Set on becoming the first female pitcher to play professional ball, Charley doesn't need reminders from her best friend Cool Willie Green to know that she has lofty dreams for a Black girl in the American South. Even so, Nana Kofi's thrilling stories about courageous ancestors and epic journeys make it impossible not to dream big. She knows he has so many more to tell, but according to her parents, she isn't old enough to know about certain things like what happened to Booker Preston that one night in Great Bridge and why she can never play on the brand-new real deal baseball field on the other side of town. When Charley challenges a neighborhood bully to a game at the church picnic, she knows she can win, even with her ragtag team. But when the picnic spills over onto their ball field, she makes a fateful decision. A child cannot protect herself if she does not know her history, and Charley's choice brings consequences she never could have imagined. In this thrilling second book of the Door of No Return trilogy, set during the turbulent segregation era, and the beginning of The Great Migration, Kwame Alexander weaves a spellbinding story of struggle, determination, and the unflappable faith of an American family.

I was eight and she was eighty . . .” At the age of four, a little girl stands on a cold, windy railroad platform in Wichita, Kansas, watching a train take her mother away. For the rest of her life, her mother will be an only occasional—and always troubled—visitor who denies her the love she longs for. Linda Joy Myers’s compassionate, gripping, and soul-searching memoir tells the story of three generations of daughters who, though determined to be different from their absent mothers, ultimately follow in their footsteps, recreating a pattern that they yearn to break. Accompany Linda as she uncovers family secrets, seeks solace in music, and begins her healing journey—ultimately transcending the prison of her childhood and finding forgiveness for her family and herself. This edition includes a new afterword in which Myers confronts her family’s legacy and comes full circle with her daughter and grandchildren, seeding a new path for them.

Book excerpt: When a prominent American Senator, former Chairman of the House Committee on Strategic Defense Issues, is found brutally murdered in the apartment of a high-class hooker, his briefcase, containing Top Secret documents, is handed to Colonel “Jazz” Sinclair, the top operative in a deep-cover Black Budget operation codenamed Cobra. Breaking into the deceased Senator’s house Jazz finds a highly sophisticated underground control center containing banks of computers and other electronic devices. Attempting to hack into the data banks he is only partially successful, but unearths enough evidence to suggest the senator, under orders from a sinister force in Britain, manipulating a rogue faction within the CIA and Al Qaeda, orchestrated the 9/11 attacks back in 2001. Unable to further penetrate the various data banks; Jazz however learns enough to convince him the senator had been spearheading a sophisticated campaign to launch America into a War of Resources, with the major oil fields of the world as the ultimate prize. Taking what he obtained to his chief, Admiral Granite Blaise, the admiral decides to inform the President. When the Admiral is killed on his way to the White House and Jazz narrowly escapes an attempt on his own life, Jazz realizes he has opened a can of worms that could bring down the government. Going underground he solicits the help of his old friend, the celebrated Mafia Boss, Fingers Cabrioni, who informs him he has been placed on America’s “Most Wanted” list. Undeterred, Jazz digs deeper. Confronting the Boston banker who payrolled the 9/11 attacks he falls in love with the man’s beautiful wife, Abby. Together they flee to South Africa where Ab-by’s folks own a secluded holiday home. In the interim the British Force has contracted the services of the world’s deadliest assassin, known simply as “The Woman”, to find and eliminate Jazz. Can Jazz and Abby, at the mercy of a faceless, totally ruthless, seemingly invincible enemy, survive?

Download or read book Metaphonology of English Paronomasic Puns written by Włodzimierz Sobkowiak and published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften. This book was released on 1991 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book English heterophonous/paronomasic/puns are investigated from a metaphonological perspective. I look into the ways and methods of native speakers' self-conscious metalinguistic manipulation of their phonological system/s/, as exemplified in punning. A phonostatistic analysis of nearly 4000 English puns is attempted in testing a hypothesis that the phonological representations accessed and generated in punning are significantly different from those used in 'ordinary' speech encoding. Comparisons are carried out against phoneme frequency distributions of running speech and those of spontaneous errors. In speech play, competence mechanisms are accessed which differ from structural competence a la Chomsky."
