Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As John Steckley writes in his Foreword, this unique text provides "something that has been missing from the literature for too long"—the first comprehensive overview of the histories, cultures, and socio-economic conditions of the First Nations of Ontario, the province/territory with the highest Indigenous population in Canada. Situated within the larger context of Canadian Indigenous issues, anthropologist Edward J. Hedican provides an accessible introduction to the complex and diverse histories of the First Nations of Ontario from early prehistoric times to contemporary day. Each chapter incorporates the voices and perspectives of Indigenous peoples on topics such as treaties, the archaeology of early Ontario, neo-colonial trends, restorative justice, and the present challenges facing Indigenous communities. With an annotated list of online resources, a glossary of important terms, and an extensive appendix providing information on every First Nation in Ontario, this text is an invaluable resource both for students in Indigenous Studies and Anthropology as well as for anyone interested in the rich culture and heritage of the First Nations of Ontario.

This book was released on 2013-09-17 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Landslides in sensitive clays represent a major hazard in the northern countries of the world such as Canada, Finland, Norway, Russia, Sweden and in the US state of Alaska. Past and recent examples of catastrophic landslides at e.g. Saint-Jean-Vianney in 1971, Rissa in 1979, Finneidfjord in 1996 and Kattmarka in 2009 have illustrated the great mobility of the remolded sensitive clays and their hazardous retrogressive potential. These events call for a better understanding of landslide in sensitive clay terrain to assist authorities with state-of-the-art hazard assessment methods, risk management schemes, mitigation measures and planning. During the last decades the elevated awareness regarding slope movement in sensitive clays has led to major advances in mapping techniques and development of highly sophisticated geotechnical and geophysical investigation tools. Great advances in numerical techniques dealing with progressive failure and landslide kinematic have also lead to increase understanding and predictability of landslides in sensitive clays and their consequences. This volume consists of the latest scientific research by international experts dealing with geological, geotechnical and geophysical aspects of slope failure in sensitive clays and focuses on understanding the full spectrum of challenges presented by landslides in such brittle materials.

Book Supercontinents Orogenesis and Magmatism

Download or read book Supercontinents Orogenesis and Magmatism written by R.D. Nance and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2024-04-24 with total page 814 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a tribute to the career of J. Brendan Murphy and features papers by over 100 authors from countries all over the world: a testament to the high-profile and far-reaching influence of Brendan’s work. The topics covered fall into three broad categories that encompass Brendan’s main fields of influence: (1) supercontinents and the supercontinent cycle, including reconstructions and modelling; (2) orogenesis and terranes, with a focus on the Appalachian–Variscan and Central Asian orogenic belts and the oceans with which they are associated; and (2) magmatism and magmatic processes, centring on the geochemistry and isotopic compositions of magmas in arc and rift setting. Like Brendan’s own research, the scope of the papers spans the globe and ranges from strongly field-based studies to conceptual analyses. All of the articles, however, are focused on unravelling some critical aspect of geology or aimed at clarifying some crucial geological process. Hence, they also share a theme common to Brendan’s many contributions in emphasizing the importance of process-oriented research.
