Book The Early Life History of Fish

Download or read book The Early Life History of Fish written by J.H.S. Blaxter and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 740 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plans for an International Symposium on the Early Life History of Fish were first discussed in 1967 at the F. A. O. Advisory Committee on Marine Resources Research {A. C. M. R. R. }. It was considered that studies on fish eggs and larvae were of value in estimating the size of fish stocks, in appraising the stock-recruitment relationship, and in helping to answer questions on the systematics and taxonomy of fish. An A. C. M. R. R. Working Party recommended in 1969 that a Symposium should be held and after discussion with the International Associa tion of Biological Oceanography {I. A. B. O. } Dr. J. H. S. Blaxter of the Scottish Marine Biological Association {S. M. B. A. } agreed to con vene the meeting with the help of a steering committee. Various in ternational agencies were interested in the meeting and agreed to sponsor it in various ways. These agencies included F. A. O. , I. A. B. O. , the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea {I. C. E. S. } and the Scientific Committee for Oceanic Research {S. C. O. R. }. In the final event F. A. O. supported the meeting by publishing the abstracts beforehand, providing travel funds for participants and publishing a report after the meeting. I. A. B. O. and S. C. O. R. provided travel funds and the Royal Society of London and S. M. B. A.

Book Reconciling Human Needs and Conserving Biodiversity Large Landscapes as a New Conservation Paradigm

Download or read book Reconciling Human Needs and Conserving Biodiversity Large Landscapes as a New Conservation Paradigm written by Bila-Isia Inogwabini and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-02-18 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Protected areas have often been defined as the backbones of biodiversity conservation. Protected areas have often been defined as the backbones of biodiversity conservation. However, legitimate demands formulated by countries for their economic development, growing human populations, forest fragmentations, and needs of local communities for sustainable livelihoods are also pressing demands on protected areas, stringently pressuring conservation community to identify means to reconcile long term biodiversity conservation and communities’ livelihoods. Hence, integrating conservation activities within the global framework of economic development of countries with high biodiversity had become part of conservation paradigms. Integrated development as a route to conservation, strict protected areas, community managed areas, etc. have been tried but resulted in debatable outcomes in many ways. The lukewarm nature of these results brought ‘landscape approach’ at the front of biodiversity conservation in Central Africa. Since the late 1990s the landscape approach uses large areas with different functional attributes and shifts foundational biodiversity conservation paradigms. Changes are brought to the role traditionally attributed to local communities, aligning sustainable development with conservation and stretching conservation beyond the confines of traditional protected areas. These three shifts need a holistic approach to respond to different conservation questions. There are only a few instances where the landscape experience has been scientifically documented and lessons learnt drawn into a corpus of knowledge to guide future conservation initiatives across Central Africa. To subjugate one biodiversity conservation landscape as one case study emerged as a matter of urgency to present the potential knowledge acquired throughout the landscape experiment, including leadership and management, processes tried, results (at least partially) achieved, and why such and such other process or management arrangement were been chosen among many other alternatives, etc. The challenges of the implementation of the conservation landscape approach needed also to be documented. This book responds to the majority of these questions; drawing its content from the firsthand field knowledge, it discusses these shifts and documents what has been tried, how successful (unsuccessful) it was, and what lessons learnt from these trials. Theoretical questions such as threat index, and ecological services, etc. are also discussed and gaps in knowledge are identified.

Book Emergency Toilet Paper

Download or read book Emergency Toilet Paper written by Gary J. Rush and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2004-10-01 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hunting, fishing, growing-up stories in "Emergency Toilet Paper" will make you say, "Hey! I did that when I was a kid and I knew it was funny... Just knew it! So why the hell did I get grounded?!" "Emergency Toilet Paper" digs into the mind of the sportsman and pulls out all the goo that makes us, umm, "special". It also helps to prove long-debated theories of the outdoor world, such as: bears on the high plains, aliens just waiting to abduct anyone with a six pack and a mind for a fishing trip, and the actual existence of the fabled "caring spouse" of an outdoorsman... OK, OK. That last one may have been a little far-fetched, but if there are any spouses out there that want to at least appear as though they care, try picking up some Emergency Toilet Paper for your beloved outdoorsman. However, be careful, you might want to first suggest they read it.

Book Nutrient Reduction and Biomanipulation as Tools to Improve Water Quality The Lake Ringsj n Story

Download or read book Nutrient Reduction and Biomanipulation as Tools to Improve Water Quality The Lake Ringsj n Story written by Lars-Anders Hansson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells a story of a large lake affected by agricultural and urban activities that have led to severe eutrophication problems with nuisance blue-green algal blooms. Although it is a case study of Lake Ringsjön (southern Sweden), the background, problems and measures are applicable to many lakes throughout the world. From a limnological point of view, the Lake Ringsjön story began more than 100 years ago, and during the last 20 years the sampling program has been intense, providing a unique data set on how a lake responds to human activities. However, the Lake Ringsjön story is not only a case study, but also a historical record of the development of ecological theory and its application. Hence, the lake has been subject both to an extensive nutrient reduction programme and a biomanipulation by means of fish reduction. Here we aim at combining the unique limnological data set with the eutrophication process, the nutrient reduction programme and the biomanipulation in order to apply our empirical knowledge to future lake management measures.

Book Improving the Collection Management and Use of Marine Fisheries Data

Download or read book Improving the Collection Management and Use of Marine Fisheries Data written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-12-10 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Congress has promoted fisheries science for over a century and its involvement in fisheries management took a great leap forward with passage of the Fisheries Conservation and Management Act of 1976. In the past decade, Congress has requested advice from the National Research Council (NRC) on both national issues (e.g., individual fishing quotas and community development quotas) and the assessments related to specific fisheries (Northeast groundfish). This report was produced, in part, in response to another congressional request, this time related to the assessments of the summer flounder stocks along the East Coast of the United States. Following the initial request, the NRC, National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), and congressional staff agreed to broaden the study into a more comprehensive review of marine fisheries data collection, management, and use.
