Book The First Farmers of Central Europe

Download or read book The First Farmers of Central Europe written by Penny Bickle and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2013-07-09 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From about 5500 cal BC to soon after 5000 cal BC, the lifeways of the first farmers of central Europe, the LBK culture (Linearbandkeramik), are seen in distinctive practices of longhouse use, settlement forms, landscape choice, subsistence, material culture and mortuary rites. Within the five or more centuries of LBK existence a dynamic sequence of changes can be seen in, for instance, the expansion and increasing density of settlement, progressive regionalisation in pottery decoration, and at the end some signs of stress or even localised crisis. Although showing many features in common across its very broad distribution, however, the LBK phenomenon was not everywhere the same, and there is a complicated mixture of uniformity and diversity. This major study takes a strikingly large regional sample, from northern Hungary westwards along the Danube to Alsace in the upper Rhine valley, and addresses the question of the extent of diversity in the lifeways of developed and late LBK communities, through a wide-ranging study of diet, lifetime mobility, health and physical condition, the presentation of the bodies of the deceased in mortuary ritual. It uses an innovative combination of isotopic (principally carbon, nitrogen and strontium, with some oxygen), osteological and archaeological analysis to address difference and change across the LBK, and to reflect on cultural change in general.

Book excerpt: Prepared by two of Missouri's most distinguished conservationists, The Wild Mammals of Missouri has been the definitive guide to mammals of this state for over forty years. Now the University of Missouri Press is pleased to release an updated edition, revised by Elizabeth R. Schwartz, reflecting the changes in Missouri's mammalian fauna and including the latest taxonomic revisions. Maintaining the original's successful format and the language that made the book accessible to both professional and lay readers, the revised edition incorporates throughout new knowledge of the various species of mammals of Missouri. Most notable is the addition of a new resident species, the nine-banded armadillo. Several other taxonomic and distributional changes are reflected and the range maps have been revised to show significant changes. Charles Schwartz's meticulously rendered drawings capture the spirit of his subjects while remaining technically accurate. These drawings range from fully rendered portraits to illustrations of dentition and skulls, tracks, and other identifying characteristics, to vignettes showing the mammals engaged in characteristic behaviors. Also included in this volume are discussions of all biological and ecological aspects of the mammals including distribution and abundance, habitat and home, habits, food, reproduction, adversities faced, and conservation and management concerns. The Schwartzes' lifelong dedication to state and national conservation and their vast biological knowledge are apparent throughout the pages of this attractive reference guide. People of all ages and backgrounds will find The Wild Mammals of Missouri an invaluable guide to the study of Missouri's mammals.

It examines the function, development and evolution of bone and cartilage as tissues, organs and skeletal systems. It describes how bone and cartilage is developed in embryos and are maintained in adults, how bone reappears when we break a leg, or even regenerates when a newt grows a new limb, or a lizard a tail. This book also looks at the molecules and cells that make bones and cartilages and how they differ in various parts of the body and across species. It answers such questions as "Is bone always bone? "Do bones that develop indirectly by replacing other tissues, such as marrow, tendons or ligaments, differ from one another? "Is fish bone the same as human bone? "Can sharks even make bone? and many more.* Complete coverage of every aspect of bone and cartilage* Full of interesting and unusual facts* The only book available that integrates development and evolution of the skeleton* Treats all levels from molecular to clinical, embryos to evolution* Written in a lively, accessible style* Extensively illustrated and referenced* Integrates analysis of differentiation, growth and patterning* Covers all the vertebrates as well as invertebrate cartilages* Identifies the stem cells in embryos and adults that can make skeletal tissues
