Book Cortical Bone Healing after Internal Fixation and Infection

Download or read book Cortical Bone Healing after Internal Fixation and Infection written by W.W. Rittmann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The danger of infection remains the most serious drawback to internal fixation. Prevention, using all available prophylactic measures should be the central feature in every surgical department. Though the infection rate may remain below the acceptable level of 2 %, the infected patient derives little comfort from the large number of excellent results in other people. We must discover the best way to offer these patients a favourable prognosis. This should not be based on intuition but on clear proven guiding principles. Planning the treatment for a patient whose internal fixation has become septic must decide between steps which may have advantages or disadvan tages. The disadvantage of the presence of a foreign body must be weighed against the advantage of rigidity. The authors have taken up this challenge by planned animal experiments to study the healing of internally fixed fractures which have been infected with staphylococci. They have shown that under stable conditions, even massive infection did not destroy the healing process in cortical bone. Even under these circumstances fracture union, in the form of primary bone healing, can occur even if with less regularity than in unin fected internal fixation.

Book Essential Biomechanics for Orthopedic Trauma

Download or read book Essential Biomechanics for Orthopedic Trauma written by Brett D. Crist and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-02-29 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biomechanics is often overlooked when dealing with orthopedic injuries, whether regarding prevention or treatment, and practicing surgeons and surgeons-in-training may feel overwhelmed when referring to a book with a more complicated basic science approach. In order to make the subject clinically relevant to orthopedic trauma surgery, this unique text presents numerous clinical case examples to demonstrate clearly and effectively the principles biomechanics of injury, fixation and fracture healing. Divided into five sections, the opening chapters cover the essentials of stress and strain relevant to bone and joints and how this relates to fractures and their healing, complete with illustrative case material. This case-based approach is carried throughout the book, with part two discussing biomechanical principles of external fixation for diaphyseal and periarticular fractures, limb lengthening and deformity correction. Tension band wiring for both olecranon and patella fractures are covered in part three, and both locking and nonlocking plates are illustrated in part four. The final section describes biomechanical principles of intramedullary nails for a variety of fractures and nonunions, as well as arthrodesis and lengthening. Generous radiological images and intraoperative photos provide a helpful visual enhancement for the clinical material. Making the sometimes esoteric topic of biomechanics more clinically relevant to the practicing clinician, Essential Biomechanics for Orthopedic Trauma will be an excellent resource not only for orthopedic surgeons, sports medicine specialists and trauma surgeons, but also medical and biomedical engineering students and residents.

Book Handbook of Orthopaedic Trauma Implantology

Download or read book Handbook of Orthopaedic Trauma Implantology written by Arindam Banerjee and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-10-31 with total page 2142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reference work comprehensively covers essential orthopedic trauma implants and their application in both upper and lower limbs. It offers insights into the invention, advantages, and disadvantages of various implants, along with the rationale behind their current designs, biomechanics, and materials. Additionally, the book addresses fracture fixation and general considerations when comparing different subgroups of implants, such as nails versus plates or ORIF versus external fixation. The book is divided into several sections, such as upper and lower limbs, spine, and pelvis. It also includes unique sections dedicated to pediatric implants, implant removal, metallurgy and bone grafts. It is written and edited by experienced surgeons from around the world. This book fills the gap as currently, there are no specific reference books on this topic but only operative manuals and inventory lists of various commercial companies detailing their own products. This highly informative and meticulously presented book serves as both a practical and a theoretical guide for practicing orthopedic surgeons, scientists/researchers, academicians, students as well as orthopedic technicians and nurses.

Book Bone in Clinical Orthopedics

Download or read book Bone in Clinical Orthopedics written by G. Sumner-Smith and published by Thieme. This book was released on 2002 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The strength of this text, based on comments from the first edition, is that the reader, particularly the newcomer to orthopedic surgery, is able to find all of the basics of the subject in one text. This concept enables the reader to come to grips with subjects that have only been touched upon in undergraduate teachings. The intent behind compiling the book is to form a bridge, or more properly a firm callus, between the literature available for undergraduate students and those intending to study bone in depth. Though many texts already exist for undergraduates and also for students of advanced orthopedic surgery, few cover the bridge intended in this edition. It is hoped that the second edition will continue to set the stage for graduates undergoing training in orthopedics, be they surgeons in the medical, dental or veterinary field. All of the authors have an established reputation in the fields that they have covered in the enclosed chapters. It is essential reading for the budding orthopedic surgeon.
