Book Fustat 1 Bone Carving from Fustat Istabl Antar

Download or read book Fustat 1 Bone Carving from Fustat Istabl Antar written by Elżbieta Rodziewicz and published by Institut français d'archéologie orientale du Caire - IFAO. This book was released on 2012 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume presents for the first time the complete ensemble of bone and ivory carvings acquired from excavations of the Institut français d'archéologie orientale in Cairo, carried out in Fustat between 1985 and 2003. The book presents detailed catalogue of 477 of the most representative objects carved in the round and in relief, and chapters containing synthetical conclusions which derived from their description and interpretation based on broad research of analogous pieces. Each object is presented in textual and pictorial form (71 plates of drawings, 53 plates with colour photos, and 9 figures with 50 objects). The text is supplied by index, concordances, bibliography, glossary, lists of drawings and photos. Individual items, types and groups of objects are analyzed and receive extensive comparative studies on a broad background from Egypt and neighboring countries. The most important is the selection and identification of such archaeological documents as off-cut and numerous workshop refuse proving directly the existence of local school carvers at Fustat. Particularly valuable is the ivory off-cut which confirmed the import and division of ivory tusk on the spot. Such identification occurred for the first rime at Fustat. Broad interdisciplinary studies lead the author to discovery of previously unknown sources of influences on identified school of bone carvers at Fustat. Aside from bone and ivory objects some horn, maritime and freshwater shell, ostrich eggshell and other objects unearthed on the side have been also recorded. The manifold uses of bone and other organic material is shown in numerous objects of everyday use intensely produced for a wide market. Great majority of them is datable to the Umayyad period. Meticulous method of research unable author to correct some erroneous theories on early Islamic bone carvings popularized in numerous catalogues through the last century. It is the first and the most complete reference book on the very important category of objects from excavation at Fustat, contributing to the broadening our knowledge on decorative art, and carved in bone daily use items of the early Islamic period in Egypt.

Book Ivory Bone and Related Wood Finds

Download or read book Ivory Bone and Related Wood Finds written by Wilma Stern and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-07-30 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hundreds of richly decorated ivory and bone fragments from furniture and parts from at least three crossed-leg chairs, survived under seawater in an apsidal room at Kenchreai, the Eastern port of ancient Corinth. These excavated remains include fragments of an incised bone panel with a scene of an emperor and attendants, a thiasos, bucolic and hunt scenes, seated philosophers, erotes, and a miniature ivory Corinthian order supporting a bone arcade decorated with erotes. Decorative moldings and large bone rings suggest that most of these belonged to a luxuriously decorated chest. Dating to the fourth century, these objects provide an important addition to our knowledge of the artistic production of late Roman Egypt and the working of ivory, bone, and wood.

Book Bone Antler Ivory and Horn

Download or read book Bone Antler Ivory and Horn written by Arthur MacGregor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-10-30 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Artefacts made from skeletal materials since the Roman period were, before this book, neglected as a serious area of study. This is a comprehensive account which reviews over fifty categories of artefact. The book starts with a consideration of the formation, morphology and mechanical properties of the materials and illuminates characteristics concerning working with them. Following chapters discuss the organisation of the industry and trade in such items, including the changing status of the industry over time. Archaeological evidence is combined with that from historical and ethnological sources, with many illustrations providing key visual reference. Originally published in 1985.
