Book excerpt: The composite FRP rebars research at Oregon State University was initiated in 1993 principally to develop a non-metallic hollow reinforcement. It was recognized that the tensile properties of such reinforcement are unquestionably superior to steel, but its performance in concrete could be problematic. The bond between FRP rebars and concrete was identified as a critical area of concern. The purpose of this study is (i) to analyze a variety of FRP and steel reinforcing units; (ii) to advance the knowledge of bond mechanism, failure modes, and parameters influencing the bond strength; (iii) to compare composite rebars to conventional steel and to assess their applicability as reinforcing members. Commercially available FRP rebars were investigated. Particular emphasis was given to a hollow glass FRP rod designed at Oregon State University. Several parameters were investigated, including: failure mode, concrete compressive strength, rebar diameter and circumference/cross section ratio, embedment length, concrete cover, and microstructure of the composite rebars. It was recognized that the ASTM C234-90 pull-out standard is test of concrete strength. Therefore a modified pull-out test was developed for evaluating the bond strength behavior. A newly developed European bond test procedure was compared with locally modified version of the pull-out method. The new procedure was used for the first time in the United States. The study demonstrated a phenomenon, not reported in the published research at this time, defined as a size effect. The size effects result in lower bond strength with increasing area of the interface between FRP bars and concrete. The next phase of the research was dedicated to the hollow glass FRP rebar. The goal was to compare its bond properties to conventional steel and solid FRP bars. The study led to two new phenomena not described in the literature previously. Results showed that the concrete compressive strength does not significantly affect the bond strength. This observation was in contradiction with the bond strength theory which considers the concrete strength as major variable. The second observation revealed significant difference in bond performance between bars with different microstructures. It is recommended that microstructure of the FRP bars be considered as a variable when investigating bond strength.

Book excerpt: Recently, fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) rebars have been extensively used in construction instead of steel rebars due to their non-corrosive nature and high tensile strength. Bond between FRP rebars and concrete is a critical design parameter that controls the performance of reinforced concrete members at serviceability and ultimate limit states. In order to prevent a bond failure, an adequate anchorage length should be provided. The anchorage length is derived using a bond stress-slip () constitutive law. The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of different parameters such as the type of fibre, the rebar surface and the confinement provided by the transverse reinforcement on the bond behaviour of FRP rebars in concrete. Based on the analysis, a generalized bond stress-slip relationship will be developed and a new design equation for the required anchorage length of FRP rebar in concrete will be derived. A database was created on the bond stress-slip behaviour of FRP rebars in concrete from the available literature up to 2009. The data was statistically analyzed to investigate the effect of the different parameters on the bond performance of FRP rebars. It was observed that an increase in the confinement provided by the transverse reinforcement increased the bond strength of FRP rebars in concrete. This signifies that the presence of transverse reinforcement affects the bond behaviour of FRP rebars in concrete and hence, it should be taken into consideration while developing design equations for FRP rebars. Type of fibre and rebar surface does not affect the bond stress, but the latter affects the slip corresponding to the peak bond stress. Based on the results, a nonlinear regression analysis was performed to develop the bond stress-slip model for splitting mode of failure and a design equation for determining the development length of the FRP rebars in concrete was derived. Book excerpt: Ultra-High-Performance Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete (UHP-SFRC) is an emerging concrete considered as an optimal, durable material that can substitute conventional concrete owing to its distinct fresh and hardened properties. Thus, it is essential to understand the mechanism of stress transfer between this concrete and conventional reinforcement that permits the composite action of both materials. A four-point bending test program (FPBT) was arranged and conducted on 19 beams designed for the bond development to occur in the constant moment region along a short embedment length in order to achieve a uniform distribution of bond stresses, enabling measurement of bond strength through reverse engineering of beam strength and deformation. Additional material testing was conducted on prisms under 4-point loading in order to extract the mechanical properties for all material mixes considered. The bond-specimens failed either by pullout or by cone formation with minimal deterioration of the concrete cover, illustrating the high confinement provided by the novel concrete surrounding the bar in tension. The bond strength was determined to be directly proportional to the tensile strength capacity of the design mix, where for the strongest material the bond strength was approximately 30 MPa. Moreover, the test results indicated a very ductile flexural beam response accompanied by significant mid-span deflection reaching 27 mm and substantial bar-slip values attaining 19 mm. Different UHP-SFRC mixes, concrete covers, and embedment lengths were considered. A numerical model was developed to simulate the FPBT using a nonlinear finite element analysis platform, VecTor2, with the ability to model this novel concrete. This high bond strength provided by the concrete cover enables a significant reduction in the design development length as compared to what is used today for conventional concrete.

Book excerpt: In this book, a method to predict the bond strength of FRP rebar in concrete by using the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) was developed based on the inadequacy of appropriate methods dealing with bond strength. ANN was implemented to understand the complex nonlinear relationship between the inputs (bar diameter, embedment length, and strength of concrete) and the output (bond strength). The training and validation of the bond strength show the good linear relationship between ANN predicted and experimental values. It revealed the fact that surface geometry of FRP rebar highly affects the bond strength. Another important part of the project was the finite element analysis of the bond strength. A 3D finite element model was developed to simulate the bond behaviour that exists between concrete and FRP using Abaqus software. The friction was used to simulate the bond phenomenon between surface of rebar and surface of concrete in pull-out test specimen model.
