Book Bonded Orthodontic Retainers

Download or read book Bonded Orthodontic Retainers written by Dave Lie Sam Foek and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Orthodontic retainers are used at the end of an orthodontic treatment to retain the achieved tooth position. Without a phase of retention, there is a tendency for the teeth to relapse towards their initial position after treatment. The aetiology of relapse is not fully understood but relates to a number of factors that involves periodontal and occlusal aspects, possibly soft tissue pressures and physiological growth. Retention, which refers to the fixation of the achieved orthodontic result, can be accomplished using removable or fixed retainers. Due to the advances in adhesive technologies, the use of fixed retainers bonded to lingual or palatal surfaces of the incisors has been widely used. Debonding of these retainers is however one of the most frequently reported failure types in orthodontics and has a multifactorial cause. This thesis was conducted in an attempt to identify some of the possible debonding factors causing these failures. Therefore, failures were analyzed in clinical retrospect as well as bond strenght comparison of different retainer types and materials. Comparison of the fatigue resistance, debonding force, and failure type of different retainer materials in vitro was conducted as well as a prospective evaluation of the survival of multi-stranded stainless steel bonded retainers using different resin composite types. At last the evaluation of anterior tooth movement with and without bonded retainers under incremental loading conditions using 3D reconstruction was done. Debonding of these retainers remains unsolved and multicausal, yet aspects such as age, gender, operator, resin composite type could be disclosed.

Book Bonded Lingual Retainers A Comparative Study

Download or read book Bonded Lingual Retainers A Comparative Study written by Renu Sarah Samson and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2014-12-17 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alignment instability is one of the major pitfalls of orthodontic treatment. As a result, orthodontists tend to recommend long-term use of retainers for enhanced stability, which may require years or even decades of retainer wear. Because bonded lingual retainers are intended to serve for long periods of time in the mouth, attempts should be made to increase the success rate of these devices. Loosening of the wire in bonded lingual retainers may result from cracks within the composite that arise from deformation of the inter-dental wire. Wire choice may therefore be important for maximizing the success of lingual retainers. This book provides valuable knowledge about the bond strength of three commonly used fixed retainer wire-composite systems and the load deflection rate to bring about 0.5 mm deformation in these lingual retainer wires. This book would be instrumental for orthodontists in assessing the type of wire that will be better retained on the tooth surfaces as numerous companies are producing different types of lingual retainer wires for fixed retention.

Book excerpt: PURPOSE Retention is an important aspect of orthodontics, which may influence the long-term outcome and satisfaction level of patients who undergo orthodontic treatment. The objective of this study was to identify commonly used orthodontic retainers and retention protocols, and assess patients' opinions and satisfaction levels with these regimens in relation to several pre-defined variables. METHODS: A 149 question survey was created with advanced skip and branching logic. The survey was administered to orthodontic patients at either the one or two year regularly scheduled retention appointment and the overall response rate was 99% (n=131). Data collection included queries on demographics, treatment satisfaction, stability and relapse, retention protocols, compliance, and satisfaction with prescribed retainers in relation to: appearance, speech, oral hygiene, retainer hygiene, the need for replacement and preferred retainers. Statistical analysis was done using Chi Square and Fishers' Exact tests to detect significantassociations between variables. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS In the population surveyed, Essix retainers in the maxilla (50%) and bonded retainers in the mandible (46%) were most frequently prescribed. Satisfaction with dental alignment post-treatment and postretention was high (~90%). Retainers prescribed depicted no associations with relapse. Self-reported compliance with prescribed retainer wear ranged between 75-85%, regardless of the regimen or retainer types. Bonded retainers were rated as the most esthetic and Hawley retainers the least. Maxillary Hawley retainers affected speech most often and bonded retainers the least. Patients with bonded retainers found it most difficult to maintain oral hygiene and keep their retainers clean, while patients with Essix found it the easiest. Bonded and Essix retainers required replacement most frequently in the maxilla and mandible respectively. Even though the majority of patients (77% maxilla, 86% mandible) were satisfied with their prescribed retainer, maxillary Essix and mandibular bonded retainers were preferred most often if replacement was an option.

Book Extra Coronal Restorations

Download or read book Extra Coronal Restorations written by Robert Wassell and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-07-31 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a state of the art clinical guide to contemporary materials and techniques for the restoration of individual teeth and implants. It fully reflects the important developments in the field over the past 15 years, including in particular the shift away from wholesale use of crowns towards adhesive dentistry and less invasive extra-coronal restorations. The book opens by considering the principles and evidence base relating to the longevity of restorations of teeth and implants. Importantly, it explains how to ensure “a healthy start” and manage future risks. Material choice and aesthetic issues are then discussed, before all aspects of the planning and provision of extra-coronal restorations are examined in depth. The coverage also includes the adaptation of crowns to existing partial dentures. In line with modern dental education, each chapter begins with clinically relevant learning objectives, and helpful clinical tips are highlighted. The book will be of value for senior dental undergraduates, postgraduates, and practicing dentists and its scientific content will be of interest to dental academics.
