Book Inter Laboratory Study to Establish the Precision and Bias of Bond Wrench Testing Under ASTM C 1329 and C 1357

Download or read book Inter Laboratory Study to Establish the Precision and Bias of Bond Wrench Testing Under ASTM C 1329 and C 1357 written by JM. Melander and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under the auspices of ASTM Committee C-01, an inter-laboratory study (ILS) was conducted to determine precision and bias for bond-wrench testing carried out under the requirements of ASTM C 1329-98 ("Standard Specification for Mortar Cement") and ASTM C 1357-98a ("Standard Test Methods for Evaluating Masonry Bond Strength"). The study involved 3 mortars, 15 laboratories and 17 sets of data. Using the statistical analysis procedures of ASTM E 691-99 ("Standard Practice for Conducting an Interlaboratory Study to Determine the Precision of a Test Method") and the computer software developed to carry out those procedures, values of intra-laboratory repeatability, r, and inter-laboratory reproducibility, R, were developed. Normalized repeatability decreases from about 30% of the mean tensile bond strength with the least restricted data subsets, to about 20% of the mean tensile bond strength with the most restricted data subsets. Normalized reproducibility decreases from about 60% of the mean tensile bond strength with the least restricted data subsets, to about 40% of the mean tensile bond strength with the most restricted data subsets. Potential factors contributing to repeatability and reproducibility are discussed.

Book An Evaluation of Bond Wrench Testing Apparatuses

Download or read book An Evaluation of Bond Wrench Testing Apparatuses written by WM. McGinley and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summarized are results of a combined testing and analytical investigation of four different bond wrench testing systems. The testing program involved placing a calibration block within each testing apparatus and applying a range of loads to the block. This calibration device was designed to simulate a standard brick couplet specimen and was instrumented with linear strain gauges which were monitored and recorded during loading. The results of these tests were compared and discussed in an effort to determine what attributes of the testing apparatuses can significantly affect the stress distribution in masonry couplet specimens. Evaluation of the bond wrench testing system was also performed using a finite element analysis.

Book Testing Bond Strength of Masonry

Download or read book Testing Bond Strength of Masonry written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Digest covers the technical background, the calibration and the interpretation of results for bond wrenches. It features the use of the 5 BRENCH but the principles and methods described are relevant also to standard bond wrenches available on the market. The BRENCH is a BRE development of the bond wrench, an in-situ tool for testing the bond of masonry units (bricks and blocks) to mortar. It is a powerful tool, used for investigating suspect masonry, for quality control of new work and for laboratory investigation of bond. It is complementary to, but more versatile than, the British Standard Wallette method.

Book Bond Strength Measurements from a TAMU Unbalanced Bond Wrench in Comparison to Brick Prism ASTM E518 Beam Test

Download or read book Bond Strength Measurements from a TAMU Unbalanced Bond Wrench in Comparison to Brick Prism ASTM E518 Beam Test written by Ankit Katiyar and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bond strength of the masonry unit is an important characteristic affecting its performance under different loading conditions, including shear and flexural loading. Bond strength of brick masonry is confirmed experimentally using a variety of techniques, including the bond wrench. Four bond wrenches have been built at TAMU over the last five years. In 2010 a lightweight unbalanced and a balanced bond wrench was developed. An Australian Standard Bond Wrench was manufactured in 2011 and in 2012 an ASTM C 1072 Bond Wrench was developed. Numerous researchers have conducted experiments to study the bias between different bond wrenches. These studies illustrated that no unacceptable bias existed in the flexural strength values calculated using the TAMU balanced and unbalanced wrench. However there existed a bias between American Bond Wrench and Australian Bond wrenches according to research. This thesis aims at understanding the bias between Unbalanced Bond Wrench developed at Texas A&M University and Standard ASTM E518 beam test method. This experimental research uses Portland cement and a total of 50 prisms was built in two sets. Each prism comprised of six bricks with five joints, and all the bricks used were Texan bricks. The mortar used here was 1:1:6. The samples were cured for a period of 28 days, and all the experiments were carried out under same weather conditions. TAMU Unbalanced Bond Wrench was used to test the first set of prisms and second set of prisms were tested using standard ASTM E518 beam method. A t-Test analysis was run between the flexural strength values of the TAMU unbalanced wrench and ASTM E518 method. From the plots, it can be inferred that the mean value of the American standard was low when compared with the mean values of the Unbalanced Bond Wrench. The plots of ASTM E518 method and TAMU unbalanced were quite dissimilar. Further research is recommended using the Texas red brick. Book Bond Strength Measurements from a TAMU Balanced Bond Wrench in Comparison to Brick Prism ASTM E518 Beam Test

Download or read book Bond Strength Measurements from a TAMU Balanced Bond Wrench in Comparison to Brick Prism ASTM E518 Beam Test written by Rishav Choudhary and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The brick to mortar bond strength affects the performance of the joints in brick masonry when subjected to various loading conditions. The flexural bond strength of masonry units can be measured using a bond wrench or a standard test like ASTM E518 beam test. The early bond wrenches were developed in the 1980s in Australian laboratories. In 2011, an Australian bond wrench was manufactured and consequently an ASTM C1072 Bond Wrench was developed in 2012. Further research was done in the field and two more lightweight bond wrenches, i.e. balanced and unbalanced, were built by Indian students at Texas A&M University. Several researchers have performed experiments to study the bias between different bond wrenches. These researches illustrated that no unacceptable bias existed in the flexural strength values calculated using the Indian balanced and unbalanced wrench. However, there existed a bias between American Bond Wrench and Australian Bond wrenches according to research. This thesis aims at understanding the bias between balanced bond wrench developed at Texas A&M University and Standard ASTM E518 beam test method. Also, Indian balanced and unbalanced bond wrench would be referred as TAMU (Texas A&M University) balanced and unbalanced bond wrench in this report. A total of 50 prisms using Portland cement and Texan bricks were built for this experimental research. The prisms were built in two sets and each prism comprised of six bricks with five joints. The mortar used here was 1:1:6 (cement: lime: sand). The samples were cured for a period of 07 days, and all the experiments were carried out under same weather conditions. TAMU balanced bond wrench was used to test the first set of prisms and second set of prisms were tested using standard ASTM E518 beam method. A Student's t-Test analysis was run between the flexural strength values of the TAMU balanced wrench and ASTM E518 method. From the plots, it can be inferred that the mean value of the American standard was low when compared with the mean values of the balanced bond wrench. The plots of ASTM E518 method and TAMU balanced were quite dissimilar. Further research is recommended using the Texas red brick. Book Use of Ruggedness Testing to Develop an Inter Laboratory Testing Protocol for Mortar Cement Mortar

Download or read book Use of Ruggedness Testing to Develop an Inter Laboratory Testing Protocol for Mortar Cement Mortar written by LG. Ponce and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1996, ASTM approved a specification for a new product, called mortar cement, intended for use in applications requiring masonry with high tensile bond strength. An inter-laboratory testing program is planned; the objectives will include the determination of intra- and inter-laboratory coefficientsof variation of bond-wrench results for that product. Prior to conducting the inter-laboratory testing program, it is necessary to set the test procedures and variables to be used. Some of those procedures (such as the precise control of flow, the use of jigs, templates and drop hammers to construct prisms, and bag curing), have already been found to reduce the variability of bond-wrench results, are included in ASTM C1329-96, Standard Specification for Mortar Cement, and ASTM C1357-96, Standard Test Methods for Evaluating Bond Strength, and will be used in the inter-laboratory study. However, other test procedures must still be established. To do so, and prior to the inter-laboratory study, a pilot "ruggedness study" was conducted; the objective was to determine which additional factors should be controlled during the inter-laboratory study. In this paper, the conduct and results of that ruggedness study are presented and discussed in the light of current bond-wrench testing procedures, and specific changes are recommended to ASTM bond-wrench testing standards.

Book Increasing the Cost Effectiveness of Interlaboratory Studies and Routine Comparative Testing

Download or read book Increasing the Cost Effectiveness of Interlaboratory Studies and Routine Comparative Testing written by CT. Walloch and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under the auspices of ASTM Committee C01 on Cement, an interlaboratory study was conducted to determine precision and bias for bond-wrench testing carried out under the requirements of ASTM Specification for Mortar Cement (C 1329-98) and ASTM Test Methods for Evaluating Masonry Bond Strength (C1357-98a). Another paper at this symposium [1] describes in detail that interlaboratory study and the results of the corresponding analysis for precision and bias. One objective of that analysis is to determine a "repeatability limit," r, and a "reproducibility limit," R. The repeatability limit quantifies what is commonly called the "within-lab variability," whereas the reproducibility limit quantifies what is commonly called the "lab-to-lab variability." The goal of this paper is to take the data from that interlaboratory study and analyze in more detail the possible sources of within-lab variability, including batch-to-batch, prism-to-prism, and bond-to-bond variability. This detailed analysis enables the rediction of variability for different test protocols (that is, with different numbers of batches, prisms and bonds). It also enables the prediction of how much time each test protocol would take to complete, which is directly related to the cost of testing. Finally, by comparing the probable variability and probable cost of each test protocol, it is possible to identify those test protocols that are most cost-effective for routine comparison of two mortars. This type of analysis is also useful in setting up other interlaboratory studies and interpreting their results.
