Book Fracture mechanics of concrete Structural application and numerical calculation

Download or read book Fracture mechanics of concrete Structural application and numerical calculation written by George C. Sih and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concrete has traditionally been known as a material used widely in the construction of roads, bridges and buildings. Since cost effectiveness has always been one of the more important aspects of design, concrete, when reinforced and/or prestressed, is finding more use in other areas of application such as floating marine structures, storage tanks, nuclear vessel containments and a host of other structures. Because of the demand for concrete to operate under different loading and environmen tal conditions, increasing attention has been paid to study concrete specimens and structure behavior. A subject of major concern is how the localized segregation of the constituents in concrete would affect its global behavior. The degree of nonhomogeneity due to material property and damage. by yielding and/or cracking depends on the size scale and loading rate under consideration. Segregation or clustering of aggregates at the macroscopic level will affect specimen behavior to a larger degree than it would to a large structure such as a dam. Hence, a knowledge of concrete behavior over a wide range of scale is desired. The parameters governing micro-and macro-cracking and the techniques for evaluating and observing the damage in concrete need to be better understood. This volume is intended to be an attempt in this direction. The application of Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics to concrete is discussed in several of the chapters.

Book Experimental Stress Analysis

Download or read book Experimental Stress Analysis written by H. Wieringa and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designing and manufacturing structures of all kinds in an economic and a safe way is not possible without doing experimental stress analysis. The modernity of structures, with their higher reliability demands, as well as today's more stringent safety rules and extreme environmental conditions necessitate the improvement of the measuring technique and the introduction of new ones. Although theoretical/mathematical analysis is improving enormously, an example of which is the finite element model, it cannot replace experimental analysis and vice versa. Moreover, the mathematical analysis needs more and more accurate parameter data which in turn need improved experimental investigations. No one can do all those investigations on his own. Exchange of knowledge and experience in experimental stress analysis is a necessity, a thing acknowledged by every research worker. Therefore, the objective of the Permanent Committee for Stress Analysis (PC SA) is to promote the organization of conferences with the purpose disseminating new research and new measuring techniques as well as improvements in existing techniques, and furthermore, to promote the exchange of experiences of practical applications with techniques. rhis Vlllth International Conference on Experimental Stress Analysis on behalf of the PC SA is one in a series which started in 1959 at Delft (NL), and was followed by conferences at Paris (F), Berlin-W, Cambridge (~K), Udine (I), Munich (FRG) and Haifa (Isr.). Such a Conference will be held in Europe every fourth year, half-way bewteen the IUTAM Congresses.

Book Local Bond Stress slip Relationship of Reinforcing Bars Embedded in Fiber Reinforced Concrete Under Splitting Type Failure

Download or read book Local Bond Stress slip Relationship of Reinforcing Bars Embedded in Fiber Reinforced Concrete Under Splitting Type Failure written by Walid Jalkh and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study summarizes experimental results of the local bond stress-slip response of reinforcing bars embedded in fiber reinforced concrete (FRC) under splitting type failure. Pullout specimens were tested to study the effect of several parameters, namely, type, volume fraction, and aspect ratio of fibers, concrete cover to reinforcing bars (or splitting area surrounding the reinforcing bar), and size of reinforcing bar. The experimental results showed that the major contribution of fibers is in the post-splitting range. As compared to plain concrete, the bond behavior of fiber reinforced concrete is more ductile inasmuch as the post-splitting bond stresses are increased. This increase is function of the fiber reinforcing index and of the fiber bond characteristics. The results from the current study were combined with other results reported in technical literature and used to develop a model to describe the bond stress-slip relationship of reinforcing bars embedded in plain and FRC under splitting type failure. The model accounts for all of the important parameters that tend to influence the bond characteristics of reinforcing bar3 as observed in the experiment. It should be mentioned that this study consists the second pact of a two-phase experimental program dealing with the local bond stress-slip characteristics of reinforcing bars embedded in fiber reinforced concrete. While this current phase concentrates on the splitting type of failure, the first part of the study (Ref. 4) emphasized pullout failure.
