Book Bond Strength Measurements from a TAMU Unbalanced Bond Wrench in Comparison to Brick Prism ASTM E518 Beam Test

Download or read book Bond Strength Measurements from a TAMU Unbalanced Bond Wrench in Comparison to Brick Prism ASTM E518 Beam Test written by Ankit Katiyar and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bond strength of the masonry unit is an important characteristic affecting its performance under different loading conditions, including shear and flexural loading. Bond strength of brick masonry is confirmed experimentally using a variety of techniques, including the bond wrench. Four bond wrenches have been built at TAMU over the last five years. In 2010 a lightweight unbalanced and a balanced bond wrench was developed. An Australian Standard Bond Wrench was manufactured in 2011 and in 2012 an ASTM C 1072 Bond Wrench was developed. Numerous researchers have conducted experiments to study the bias between different bond wrenches. These studies illustrated that no unacceptable bias existed in the flexural strength values calculated using the TAMU balanced and unbalanced wrench. However there existed a bias between American Bond Wrench and Australian Bond wrenches according to research. This thesis aims at understanding the bias between Unbalanced Bond Wrench developed at Texas A&M University and Standard ASTM E518 beam test method. This experimental research uses Portland cement and a total of 50 prisms was built in two sets. Each prism comprised of six bricks with five joints, and all the bricks used were Texan bricks. The mortar used here was 1:1:6. The samples were cured for a period of 28 days, and all the experiments were carried out under same weather conditions. TAMU Unbalanced Bond Wrench was used to test the first set of prisms and second set of prisms were tested using standard ASTM E518 beam method. A t-Test analysis was run between the flexural strength values of the TAMU unbalanced wrench and ASTM E518 method. From the plots, it can be inferred that the mean value of the American standard was low when compared with the mean values of the Unbalanced Bond Wrench. The plots of ASTM E518 method and TAMU unbalanced were quite dissimilar. Further research is recommended using the Texas red brick. Book Bond Strength Measurements from a TAMU Balanced Bond Wrench in Comparison to Brick Prism ASTM E518 Beam Test

Download or read book Bond Strength Measurements from a TAMU Balanced Bond Wrench in Comparison to Brick Prism ASTM E518 Beam Test written by Rishav Choudhary and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The brick to mortar bond strength affects the performance of the joints in brick masonry when subjected to various loading conditions. The flexural bond strength of masonry units can be measured using a bond wrench or a standard test like ASTM E518 beam test. The early bond wrenches were developed in the 1980s in Australian laboratories. In 2011, an Australian bond wrench was manufactured and consequently an ASTM C1072 Bond Wrench was developed in 2012. Further research was done in the field and two more lightweight bond wrenches, i.e. balanced and unbalanced, were built by Indian students at Texas A&M University. Several researchers have performed experiments to study the bias between different bond wrenches. These researches illustrated that no unacceptable bias existed in the flexural strength values calculated using the Indian balanced and unbalanced wrench. However, there existed a bias between American Bond Wrench and Australian Bond wrenches according to research. This thesis aims at understanding the bias between balanced bond wrench developed at Texas A&M University and Standard ASTM E518 beam test method. Also, Indian balanced and unbalanced bond wrench would be referred as TAMU (Texas A&M University) balanced and unbalanced bond wrench in this report. A total of 50 prisms using Portland cement and Texan bricks were built for this experimental research. The prisms were built in two sets and each prism comprised of six bricks with five joints. The mortar used here was 1:1:6 (cement: lime: sand). The samples were cured for a period of 07 days, and all the experiments were carried out under same weather conditions. TAMU balanced bond wrench was used to test the first set of prisms and second set of prisms were tested using standard ASTM E518 beam method. A Student's t-Test analysis was run between the flexural strength values of the TAMU balanced wrench and ASTM E518 method. From the plots, it can be inferred that the mean value of the American standard was low when compared with the mean values of the balanced bond wrench. The plots of ASTM E518 method and TAMU balanced were quite dissimilar. Further research is recommended using the Texas red brick. Book Flexural Bond Strength Testing An Evaluation of the Bond Wrench Testing Procedures

Download or read book Flexural Bond Strength Testing An Evaluation of the Bond Wrench Testing Procedures written by WM. McGinley and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent adoption of flexural tensile bond as a criterion for acceptance of materials in building construction by the Uniform Building Code has directed considerable attention to the ASTM C 1072 - 86 Standard Method for Measurement of Masonry Flexural Bond Strength and the bond wrench testing apparatus. Described is an experimental evaluation of the Bond Wrench Testing Apparatus and testing procedures. During the investigation a device for calibration of the bond wrench was developed and evaluated.

Book Inter Laboratory Study to Establish the Precision and Bias of Bond Wrench Testing Under ASTM C 1329 and C 1357

Download or read book Inter Laboratory Study to Establish the Precision and Bias of Bond Wrench Testing Under ASTM C 1329 and C 1357 written by JM. Melander and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under the auspices of ASTM Committee C-01, an inter-laboratory study (ILS) was conducted to determine precision and bias for bond-wrench testing carried out under the requirements of ASTM C 1329-98 ("Standard Specification for Mortar Cement") and ASTM C 1357-98a ("Standard Test Methods for Evaluating Masonry Bond Strength"). The study involved 3 mortars, 15 laboratories and 17 sets of data. Using the statistical analysis procedures of ASTM E 691-99 ("Standard Practice for Conducting an Interlaboratory Study to Determine the Precision of a Test Method") and the computer software developed to carry out those procedures, values of intra-laboratory repeatability, r, and inter-laboratory reproducibility, R, were developed. Normalized repeatability decreases from about 30% of the mean tensile bond strength with the least restricted data subsets, to about 20% of the mean tensile bond strength with the most restricted data subsets. Normalized reproducibility decreases from about 60% of the mean tensile bond strength with the least restricted data subsets, to about 40% of the mean tensile bond strength with the most restricted data subsets. Potential factors contributing to repeatability and reproducibility are discussed.

Book Learning from Failure

Download or read book Learning from Failure written by Luigia Binda and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On March 17 1989, the Civic Tower of Pavia collapsed without apparently any warning sign, killing four people. After an experimental and analytical investigation lasted nine months, the collapse cause was found in a progressive damage dating back many years and due mainly to the heavy dead load put on top of the existing medieval tower when realising a massive bell-tower in granite. Other case histories have been collected as the collapse of the St. Marco bell-tower in Venice in 1902, of the Sancta Maria Magdalena bell-tower in 1992 in Dusseldorf, the damages of the bell-tower of the Monza Cathedral and of the Torrazzo in Cremona. Later on, in 1996 the collapse of the Noto Cathedral showed that similar progressive damages can take place in pillars of churches and cathedrals. The experimental research aimed to show the reliability of this interpretation went on and it is still continuing since 1989 and it is described in the book. After a careful interpretation of the experimental results, also based on experiences from rock mechanics and concrete, the modelling of the phenomenon for massive structures as creep behaviour of masonry was implemented. The book has the scope of helping architects and engineers to deal with the continuous damage of heavy structures and, to understand the signs of the phenomenon while proposing some modelling, but also to give guidelines for the on site investigation, monitoring and repairing of the damaged structures.
